Vocabulary

• Immigrant- A person entering a country in order to live there permanently

• Refugee- A person who flees to another country due to danger in their own country

• Illegal Immigrant- A person entering a country unlawfully

• Asylum- A safe place or protection from arrest or punishment or persecution

Vocabulary

• Emigration- to permanently leave one country for another (E=Exit)

• Immigration- to enter a country in order to live there (I=In)

• Deport- to forcefully return a person to their native country

Vocabulary

• Ellis Island- An island in New York harbor used as an immigration center between 1892 and 1924 when over 16 million immigrants came to the United States.

• Emigrant- A person leaving a country in order to live somewhere else

• Citizen- a person who owes allegiance to the government and is entitled to government protection.
