Background of Charlie Chaplin

Charlie Chaplin was born on April 16, 1889in London, England.He first visited the United States in 1910 when he joined an acting troupe for two years and then immigrated to the U.S in 1913 where he came by boat.

Why did he leave his country?

Charlie Chaplin was a famous silent movie actor. He loved acting on stage but first started in the movies when he was fourteen years old. When he came to the United States in 1913 he was already well known for his acting. At this time he was making $150 a week which was a lot of money back then.

How did Charlie overcome challenges?

When Charlie Chaplin arrived in the United States it was much different for him than other immigrants who were looking for work opportunities or to make their dreams come true. Charlie was born from talented parents. His Mother and Father were both singers and actors and his Mother was also in the opera. This made life for Charlie much easier. He had a connection into acting when he was younger. When he arrived in the U.S, he already had a job to be in a movie.

How did Charlie contribute to the culture of the United States?

Charlie Chaplin made silent movies. He acted as a comedian but he also composed his own music. He once said “simple tunes give me the image of comedies” and soon he opened the Charles Chaplin Music Company. Other immigrants who did not speak the same languages loved his movies because they were silent so everyone could understand them and see them together.

What did I find most interesting?

The government thought that Charlie Chaplin was a communist which means that they thought he was against the United States. They even threatened to kick him out of the country but they proved that he wasn’t and was so liked by so many people that they let him stay.
