He will not cry or lift up his voice, or make it heard in the street; a bruised reed he will not break, and a dimly burning wick he will not quench; he will faithfully bring forth justice. He will not grow faint or be crushed until he has established justice in the earth; and the coastlands wait for his teaching. Thus says God, the LORD, who created the heavens and stretched them out, who spread out the earth, and what comes from it, who gives breath to the people upon it and spirit to those who walk in it: I am the LORD, I have called you in righteousness, I have taken you by the hand and kept you; I have given you as a covenant to the people, a light to the nations, to open the eyes that are blind to bring out the prisoners from the dungeon, from the prison those who sit in darkness. I am the LORD, that is my name; my glory I give to no other, nor my praise to idols. See, the former things have come to pass, and new things I now declare, before they spring forth, I tell you of them.(Isaiah 42:1-9) Verses 1-4 in the first paragraph above contain the first of the four Servant Songs written in the book of Isaiah. In my April column about the third Servant Song earlier this year, I stated that Christians believe that these Servant Songs point to Jesus as the suffering servant. In his third chapter, Matthew writes about Jesus appearing before John the Baptist requesting that he be baptized. Note the correlation between Matthews words in Chapter 3:13-17 and those in Isaiah, above. When Jesus asks John the Baptist to baptize him, John questions Jesus and responds, I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?Jesus answers him, Let it be so now, for it is proper for us in this way to fulfill all righteousness.Matthew then writes that when Jesus came up out the water, he saw that the heavens opened and the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting on him. And a voice from heaven said, This is my Son, the Beloved, with whom I am well pleased.’” (Matthew 3:16-17) In Matthew, we hear an echo of Isaiah 42:1. Washington School Kindness Closets Each month we will spotlight items needed for the clothes

closets at our schools.

January-Boys underwear and pants size 6-16.

If someone would like me to pray for them as a daily routine, I'd be more than happy to do that. Or, if

someone would like a contact call at least once a week, or a morning safety call, I've done that for

folks. Within the house I can get around, but especially in winter, steps to go out of our house are

risky. These contact calls are for friends to have a listener. Not for me to share anyone's news. I'm happy to

pray with people, also. Laurie Wittmayer-O’Neill

WW (Weight Watchers) will be

having weekly workshops here at

Immanuel beginning the 3rd or 4th

week of January. They will be

Thursdays from 4-7pm.

We will be having worship on New year’s Day at 6 pm

Come and praise God, start the year off right. We are hoping to

fill the church as God’s fills us with the promise of a new year.

Learn more at www.LSIowa.org and www.facebook.com/LSI.iowa. Finding Her Community Originally from Eritrea, Kiros, her husband, and her young son were forced to flee their country and live in an Ethiopian refugee camp for almost two years. When the opportunity came to resettle in Iowa, Kiros and her husband were excited to put down roots and call Iowa home. They settled in the Des Moines community and knew this was it; this was where they wanted to create a new life in the U.S. Since then, they have raised four more children and set their sights on receiving citizenship in the country that helped them heal and rebuild. Kiros enrolled in LSI’s English and citizenship classes and worked hard to study for her U.S. Citizenship Exam. Every week, she met with instructors from LSI’s Refugee and Immigrant Services to prepare for her interview with U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. When the time came, she passed her exam with flying colors. She recently attended her U.S. citizenship ceremony, then went home to prepare for her daughter’s fifth birthday party. Kiros has poured her time and energy into building a life where her family has the same opportunities as every other family in their community.

Continued from page 1 Later, in Chapter 12, verses 18-20, Matthew quotes Isaiah 42:1-4 in telling the story of the crowds who followed Jesus seeking to be cured; Jesus cured all of them and told them not to tell anyone. Matthew writes that this was to fulfill what Isaiah wrote in these four verses. Matthew, therefore, clearly believes that these words in Isaiah were about Jesus. In verses 6-7 of Chapter 42, Isaiah writes, “. . . I am the LORD, I have called you in righteousness, I have taken you by the hand and kept you; I have given you as a covenant to the people, a light to the nations, to open the eyes that are blind to bring out the prisoners from the dungeon, from the prison those who sit in darkness.” The “you” that the Lord refers to in this passage is the coming Messiah, which to Christians is Jesus, the Christ. Isaiah is quoted or alluded to approximately 21 times in the gospels and 41 times in the other New Testament books. No other Old Testament book, except for Psalms, is quoted more often in the New Testament. An article in Wikipedia stated, “The Book of Isaiah has been immensely influential in the formation of Christianity. . . . The regard in which Isaiah was held was so high that the book was frequently called ‘the Fifth Gospel’, the prophet who spoke more clearly of Christ and the Church than any others.” Through the words of Isaiah the Prophet, God points us to Jesus the Christ on whom God had put his spirit, whom God gave as a covenant to his people, who would bring justice and be a light to the nations, who would open the eyes of the blind, and who would bring the prisoners who sit in darkness out from the dungeons. The Chosen One, Jesus, will not grow faint or weary until he has established justice on this earth. God is, indeed, with him. God has taken him by the hand and has kept him. And, God has done this for us and for all people. We are the beneficiaries and the recipients of this great gift. Thanks be to God.

Council Highlights The year 2019 has been a year of exploration for the Immanuel council. We read Canoeing the

Mountain and had a retreat to attempt to discover what it means to us. We visited with city

officials, school officials and others to ascertain the needs of Washington. Of course food for

many, clothing especially for the children, shelter for the homeless. Basic needs of everyone. What can we do

at Immanuel to help meet these needs. We have started some of these. The year 2020 will be a year of

action. Looking at the needs of our building and our community. What will we do with the East Wing? What

are the needs of our sanctuary? What are the needs of the people and what does God call us to action?

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!

The Epiphany Season

January brings us out of the Christmas season and into the season of Epiphany. “Epiphany” means “to show” or “to make known” or “to reveal”. During the 2nd century “Epiphany” was used, by the church, to express the manifestations of the incarnation of God in Jesus Christ. During the Epiphany Season, manifestations of God incarnate are commemorated: Jesus, Lord and King, of both Jews and Gentiles – when the Wise Men visited child Jesus in Bethlehem. The Wise Men were the first to reveal Jesus, to the world, as the incarnate Christ. This is called the Epiphany of Our Lord and is always celebrated on January 6th. The color of the paraments for Epiphany is white: purity, holiness, and joy. Jesus’ Divinity – Jesus’ baptism by John the Baptist, with the speaking of God the Father and the appearance of God the Holy Spirit revealed Jesus to be God’s Son (celebrated Sunday, January 12th). The color of the paraments is also white. Jesus revealing God’s power through love for the world – made known through Jesus’ ministry of preaching, miracles, and healings. The color of the paraments is green: representing the new life that Jesus gives us and our spiritual growth. The Epiphany season concludes with the Transfiguration of our Lord, which will be celebrated on Sunday, February 23rd. The church year moves from the season of Epiphany into the season of Lent beginning, Ash Wednesday, February 26th.

Confirmand and Mentor Dinner ~ January 26th

Our 8th grade confirmation students: Taylor Bartholomew, Caitlin Kroll, Emma Lueck, and

Mikaila Matheson will be each asking a woman, between January 1st and January 14th, to be

their potential confirmation mentor. To kick off this new relationship a Confirmand and

Mentor dinner will be held on Sunday, January 26th at 6 p.m., Pastor Howard will host this

dinner. The mentor will meet with their confirmand once a week in February/March to

journey together on faith topics: talking faith together; worship; learning; witness; and service

(discussion sheets provided by Pastor Maureen). The confirmands will write a faith review

with the help from their mentor (due in March) and complete a service project with their

mentor (completed by April). During the months of March and April, the confirmand and

mentor will only meet at their discretion to complete their servant project (worship together

during Lent). The confirmand and mentor will explain their servant project to the

congregation on Sunday, April 19th. The mentor will be present with the confirmand at their

confirmation on Sunday, April 26th, 10:30 a.m. worship. What a great opportunity to enrich

the life of a teen!

Epiphany

The Constitution vote to make the changes mandated at the 2019 Churchwide Assembly unanimously passed on

Wednesday, December 18th and on Sunday, December 22nd.
