  • Pastor’s Page Page 7 Give and it will be given to you XIX When we talk about an increase of vocations to the priesthood or the religious life we often use the word “generous” in regard to the acceptance of the “call.” It can only be from a generous heart that a man or a woman can successfully respond to the call to give their life for a higher call. It is of the very nature of religious life [without getting too technical] that poverty, chastity and obedience be embraced wholeheartedly as an expression of a monk or a nun’s love for the Lord. While theologians tell us that celibacy is not of the nature of priesthood, it has been the discipline of the Latin Church since early times. I remember in the course on Priesthood that I took at St. Patrick’s Seminary, the professor was making a big deal about celibacy not being a part of priesthood, but my experience having come out of a Protestant Church where celibacy was not valued nor practiced, is that celibacy is the single most impressive factor in the priesthood. That a man would be willing to give his life “generously” in that way communicates that Catholic priests really mean business. To give up wife and family, to give up intimacy and embrace a single, celibate lifestyle is to really put some “skin in the game.” It is to willingly offer a sacrifice, to put Jesus first, last and always. You may say, Father the way you write about it, it must be easy for you? No, we all get lonely and we all have desires for intimacy, but in priesthood as well as religious life, there are benefits that make it worthwhile. To follow Jesus in that way is a great privilege. Is it for everyone? No. It is for those whom Jesus has called? Yes, when a man or woman responds with a generous heart. IHM pray for us, Fr.

Fifth Sunday of Lent How fitting that the first Sunday Angelus of Pope Francis, who has made mercy his papacy’s theme, took place the last time today’s Gospel about Jesus’ encounter with the adulterous woman was proclaimed. “Jesus’ attitude is striking,” Francis declared. “We do not hear words of scorn or condemnation, only words of love, of mercy, an invitation to conversion: ‘Neither do I condemn you’ ” (John 8:11). Francis continued: “God’s face is the face of a merciful father who is always patient. Have you thought about God’s patience, the patience [God] has with each one of us? That is [God’s] mercy. [God] always has patience, patience with us . . . understands us . . . waits for us . . . does not tire of forgiving us” if we return ‘with a contrite heart” (Pope Francis, Angelus address, March 17, 2013). Parishes preparing catechumens may proclaim Jesus’ raising of Lazarus. Referring to Lazarus, and all those “raised” from the “death” of sin, Jesus defines the community’s “mission of mercy”— “Untie him and let him go” (John 11:44).
