Bishop and Martyr Pavel Gojdic, OSBM was born on July 17th, 1888 at

Ruske Peklany near Presov, into the family of the Greek Catholic (Byzantine

Catholic) priest Stefan Gojdic; his mother's name was Anna Gerberyova. He

received the name of Peter in baptism (continue pg. 4).

Руських Пеклянах (Словачинна). Був охрещений в неділю 23 липня та

названий символічним іменем Петром – «скалою», бо й на неї потім

опиралася наша стражденна Греко-Католицька Церква серед

IC CHURCH RESTORATION FUND Two new share (savings) accounts have been recent-ly set up at the Ukrainian credit unions to accept dona-tions designated for church restoration. Donations can be made directly to these accounts: At the Ukrainian Future Credit Union (Future), the new account is identified as "IC Church Restoration" and bears account number 13194 S20. At the Ukrainian Selfreliance Michigan Federal Credit Un-ion (Selfreliance), the account is identified as "IC Church Restoration" and bears account number 17263. As of July 11, 2011, approximately $52,000.00 in dona-tions for restoration work has been received and deposit-ed into these accounts. Approximately $300,000 in dona-tions is needed in order to finance Phase One of the church restoration project. It is imperative that the first phase of restoration work begin this summer in order to avoid further damage to the church building (exterior and interior) that would be occasioned by any significant and unnecessary delay. Without your generous and timely donations this simply cannot be done. We need your help and we need it NOW.

Bishop and Martyr Pavel Gojdic, OSBM attended the elementary school at Cigelka, Bardejov and

Presov, finishing his primary studies at Presov, which he concluded with his maturity exam in 1907. Obeying

God's call to the priesthood he began his study of theology at Presov. Since he obtained excellent results, he

was sent a year later to continue his studies in Budapest. Here too he tried to lead a profound spiritual life.

While still a seminarian he was directed by his spiritual director on these lines: "Life is not difficult, but it is a

serious matter" – words that were to guide him throughout his life. Having finished his studies on August 27th

1911 he was ordained priest at Presov by Bishop Dr. Jan Valyi. After his ordination he worked for a short pe-

riod as assistant parish priest with his father. After a year he was appointed prefect of the eparchial seminary

and at the same time taught religion in a higher secondary school. Later he was put in charge of protocol and

the archives in the eparchial curia. He was also entrusted with the spiritual care of the faithful in Sabinov as

assistant parish priest. In 1919 he became director of the episcopal office.

To everyone's surprise on July 20th, 1922 he joined the Order of St. Basil the Great at Chernechia Ho-

ra (Monks' Mount) near Mukacevo, where, taking the habit on 27.1.1923 he took the name Pavel. He took this

decision as a sign of modesty, humility, and a desire to lead an ascetic life in order to better serve God. But

God willed otherwise and had ordered him to a higher office as bishop. On September 14th, 1926 he was

nominated Apostolic Administrator of the eparchy of Presov. During his installation as Apostolic Administra-

tor he announced the programme of his apostolate: "With the help of God I want to be a father to orphans, a

support for the poor and consoler to the afflicted".

The first official act of Pavel Gojdic in his office as newly appointed administrator of the eparchy of

Presov was to address a pastoral letter on the occasion of the 1100 anniversary of the birth of St. Cyril, Apos-

tle of the Slavs. Thus he begins his activity in the spirit of the Apostle of the Slavs, always faithful to Rome,

as they were. He was a Slav and was very fond of his byzantine rite.

A great desire of bishop Gojdic was to die comforted by the sacraments on his birthday. Both desires

were fulfilled. Father Alojz Vrana was transferred to the room of the prison hospital of Leopoldov, where the

bishop passed his last days, and could hear his confession. The chalice of suffering of Bishop Pavel was about

to overflow. An eye witness of the last instants of his life was his fellow prisoner – the nurse Frantisek

Ondruska, who has given a unique testimony. He confirmed that the desire of the bishop had been fulfilled –

he died on July 17th, 1960 that is on the day of his 72nd birthday. He died in the hospital of the Prison of Leo-

poldov as a result of illness resulting from the ill treatment he had suffered. Afterwards he was buried without

ceremony in the prison cemetery in a nameless tomb, with the prison number 681.

As a result of the easing of the political situation in Czecho-Slovakia in 1968, the state autorities after

many delays gave permission for exhuming the mortal remains of Bishop Pavel Gojdic. This happened in the

cemetery of Leopoldov on October 29th, 1968 and was followed by the transfer of the remains to Presov. By

a decision of the authorities set up after the Soviet occupation these were transferred to the crypt of Greek

Catholic Cathedral of St. John the Baptist in Presov. From May 15th, 1990 they are to be found in a sarcopha-

gus in the chapel of the cathedral.

Bishop Pavel Gojdic was legally rehabilitated on September 27th, 1990. Subsequently he was decorat-

ed posthumously with the Order of T. G. Masaryk – 2nd class, and with the Cross of Pribina – 1st class.

Блаженний Павло Петро Гойдич, ЧСВВ був людиною веселої вдачі, милого вигляду, непоганий

спортсмен, талановитий музикант… Родина вже бачила в ньому визначного лікаря… Проте йому

запали в серце одні слова, почуті на реколекціях: «Я народився для вищих справ», через що він забажав

стати Господнім слугою, бути зачисленим в ряди Христових учнів. 1907 р. Петро Гойдич вступає на теологію в Пряшеві. Подальші студії продовжив у Будапешті,

де під проводом доктора Ганауера веде строге аскетичне життя. Його дисциплінованість виявлялася в

точному заховуванні денного порядку. 1911 р. Разом зі своїм старшим братом Корнелієм приймає Тайну свящества в целібаті,

заручившись таким чином із Божественним Спасителем. Священичі свячення йому вділив єп. Валій,

високий церковий ієрарх, який вже тоді добачав у ньому свого помічника в майбутності. Христовий

атлет відзначався найбільше двома вагомими чеснотами: покорою та чистотою серця, щоб у такий

спосіб якнайкраще стати схожим на нашого Господа Христа.

1922 р. o. Петро Гойдич вступає до василіянського монастиря на Чернечій горі біля м. Мукачева,

де він 23 січня 1923 р. після належного випробувального періоду одягнув василіянську рясу. Своєю

ревністю та покорою він швидко завоював прихильність усіх своїх молодих братів у новіціяті. На

Чернечу гору до Мукачева, звідки почалося його монаше життя, уже будучи владикою, він приїздив

щорічно, щоб відбути духовні вправи, як також часто любив проводити відпустку по василіянських

монастирях. 1924 р. складає перші монаші обіти та призначається до монастиря в Ужгороді, де активно

провадить молодь в організації Апостольства молитви, дає реколекції та місії.

1926 р. Св. Апостольський Престол іменував Павла Гойдича Апостольським Адміністратором

Пряшівської єпархії. Того ж року складає монашу професію в монастирі Отців Василіян у Крехові.

З 1927 р. керує Пряшівською єпархією. Папа Пій XI іменує його титулярним єпископом

Гарпазьким, викликаючи негайно до Рима, де на свято Благовіщення у храмі св. Климента відбувається

його хіротонія. У 1943 р. Папа Пій XII призначає його пряшівским єпископом.

У 1951 р. за визнання своєї віри Павла Гойдича засуджено на досмертне ув'язнення, страту прав і

титулів та конфіскацію майна. Будучи людиною золотого серця, він став у в'язниці, направду, "всім для

всіх". Всі його дуже швидко полюбили, навіть тюремні вартові. Його бажана присутність кожного

заспокоювала та зміцнювала. Привітна усмішка ніколи не щезала з єпископового обличчя.

1960 р. проголошено амністію, що стосуватися також і хворого 70-літнього Преосв. Павла. Проти

єпископового звільнення розпочали протест у Празі представники Православної Церкви. Того ж року

покірний страждалець помирає в леопольдівській в'язниці в день свого народження. Поховано Павла

Гойдича під № 681. У 1968 р. відбулася ексгумація тілесних останків владики і їх було перевезено до

Пряшева, а згодом переміщено з каплиці до катедральної крипти.

Коли в 1995 р. Святіший отець Іван Павло II відвідав Пряшів, то прийшов поклонитися мощам

василіянського єпископа-мученика Павла Гойдича і молився біля його гробу в Катедральному соборі

Пряшева.

4 листопада 2001 Святіший Отець Іван Павло ІІ проголосив його блаженним у Римі. Свята

Христова Церква святкує пам'ять свщмч. Павла Гойдича 17 липня, як в'язня Любові, оборонця святої

віри, як приклад вірності своєму Творцеві, народові й Церкві, великого шанувальника Пречистої Діви

Марії та Пресвятого Христового Серця.

In the history of the Ukrainian Community of the Metropolitan Detroit area we have reached another milestone. This

year, 2011, marks the 75th anniversary of Immaculate Conception Ukrainian Catholic School. Seventy five years ago,

our community leaders came together with members of the clergy and founded what today is the Immaculate Concep-

tion Ukrainian Catholic Schools.

On the occasion of the 75th anniversary of Immaculate Conception Ukrainian Catholic Elementary School, we pay hom-

age and express our sincere gratitude to the clergy, the members of the Order of St. Basil the Great, who served, taught,

struggled and continue to maintain a formidable educational institution. We honor the Sisters and faculty who gave and

continue to give unselfishly of their talents and gifts, to instruct, direct and inspire students.

We honor the parents who valued education for their children that would preserve their unique Byzantine Catholic Rite,

and Ukrainian language, culture and tradition. We remember our many benefactors who have supported and continue to

support our schools and whose sacrifices were and are the backbone of our survival. We remember and honor with grati-

tude those who served and serve on the staff in many other capacities, for those too were part of the woven fabric of Im-

maculate Conception Ukrainian Catholic Schools.

Last but not least, we honor the thousands of students and graduates who attended and attend our Immaculate Concep-

tion Ukrainian Catholic Schools. You played a major role in establishing the stellar reputation of our schools. We were

formidable and continue to excel scholastically as well as in sports. You made us proud to be part of Immaculate Con-

ception Ukrainian Catholic Schools. You helped realize the dream of seventy five years ago.

We extend a heartfelt invitation to all benefactors, supporters, past and present faculty, parents, former students and

friends to join the celebration of our 75th Anniversary. On Sunday, October 23, 2011, attend the 10:00 a.m. Divine Lit-

urgy at Immaculate Conception Church with responses sung by the Ukrainian Bandurist Chorus and later the Diamond

Jubilee Banquet at 4:00 p.m. with His Eminence Bishop Hlib Lonchyna, a former student and alumnus, as guest speaker

and other guests.
