“Martyrs”
A martyr is a person who voluntarily suffers death as
the penalty of witnessing to and refusing to renounce a
religion or their faith.
Jesus said to his disciples, “Whoever wishes to come
after me must deny himself, take up his cross, and
follow me. For whoever wishes to save his life will
lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will
find it.” Matt 16:24&25
Throughout the history of man there have been people
who have died for their faith, and on Tuesday we
celebrate John the Baptist who was beheaded by Herod.
Even today there are many people who have lost their
life for their faith, and those who when out to proclaim
the good news. What about us, what have we denied or
given up for our faith? Are we willing? We could be
like the rich man in scripture and ask Jesus what we
should do. Jesus said… “Go sell all you have and come
follow me.” The rich man then went away sad because
he had many possessions.
We are asked as disciples to deny our self and take up
our cross. Each of us goes through trails in our life that
cause us to call out to God, for help. Whatever it is
chronic illness, financial, emotional, depression, and
stress of everyday life that causes us to doubt God? We
need God to help us through these trials and trust that
he will give us whatever we need to endure our
hardships.
Not all of us are called to be a martyr, but all are called
not to let the things of this world, get in the way of our
faith. We assured that the gifts of Holy Spirit will be
able to help us to discern the will of God.
Deacon Everett Doxtator
John the Baptist
John the Baptist was
a Jewish itinerant preacher, and
John used baptism as the central
symbol or sacrament.
According to the New
Testament, John anticipated a
messianic figure greater than
himself. Christians commonly
refer to John as the precursor or
forerunner of Jesus, since John announces Jesus’
coming. John proclaims baptism of repentance for the
forgiveness of sin, and says another will come after him
who will not baptize with water, but with the Holy
Spirit.
We all know the story of John’s death by Herod, the
tetrarch. Herod sized John, bound him and put him in
prison for the sake of Herodias; his brother Philip’s
wife, because John had stated to him “It is not lawful
for you to have her.”
John condemned him for taking his brother’s wife, and
brought direct opposition to Herod and Herodias.
Herodias wanted to kill him, bur Herod was in fear of
the people because they saw him as a prophet. When
Herod’s birthday came, the daughter of Herodias
danced before his company and pleased Herod, so he
promised with an oath to give whatever she might ask.
Prompted by her mother, she said
“Give me the head of John the Baptist
her on a platter”. (Wikipedia)

Missionary Collection 2017
This past Sunday, August 27th
you
listened to Father Benny Jacob explain
about the Missionary Collection and
how it has changed his life. There is
still time to respond to this great need,
all that it supports in our Mission
Collection, and all it does to help these young priests.
Please and give a little bit to help out others, like Father
Benny Jacob.
It was a joy to have Father Benny Jacob here with us,
and we will look forward to another missionary coming
in to speak with us in the future.
Faith Formation
Seek God’s Will
Peter was expecting a Messiah that would carry out a
different plan than the one Jesus had explained. Jesus
was indeed the Messiah, but his life & death would
show a different understanding of what it means to be
the Messiah. We too have expectations of God and our
own ideas about what we think God ought to be doing
in our world. Like Peter we may risk limiting our image
of God by thinking only in human ways. God’s plan is
always more than we can ever imagine.
As you gather as a family, talk about what we expect
God to be doing in our world and in our family life.
Then read today’s Gospel, Matthew 16:21-27. Why do
you think Peter was so upset by what Jesus was saying?
Notice how Jesus reprimands Peter. Do we sometimes
forget to let God be God for us? That is, do we
sometimes get discouraged because God doesn’t act in
our world in the ways that we expect? Pray together that
your family will remember that God is always working
for the world’s salvation in ways that are beyond our
human imaginings. Conclude by praying together
today’s Psalm, Psalm 63.
God Bless,
Sandy Lezotte +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
