Sixth Sunday of Easter

PARISH NURSE NOTE

Sleep By Mayo Clinic Staff

It can be tough to get a good night's sleep. Work, household responsibilities and family commitments sometimes take priority over sleep. Factor in a partner's snoring or unex-pected challenges, such as financial worries or an illness, and quality sleep might be even more elusive. Still, you're not doomed to toss and turn night after night. To improve your sleep, consider simple self-care tips — such as sticking to a sleep schedule and relaxing before bed. If you're thinking about using a sleep aid, know what you're getting yourself into. Over-the-counter sleep aids can be effective for an occasional sleepless night, but they're not meant for long-term use. Don't assume that a good night's sleep is only a dream. If sleep remains elusive, ask your doctor about other treatment options

Rubric Reflections As we just celebrated First Eucharist last Sunday, it is a good time to reflect on what it means to receive the Body and Blood of Christ during the communion procession. You may want to take some time before Mass in the next few weeks to reflect on the Guidelines for the Reception of Communion found on the inside front cover of the missal in the pews. Here in the United States, we are able to receive the Body of Christ on the tongue, or in the hand. Whichever choice we make, it is important that our gestures reflect our respect for the awesome gift we are receiving. We are asked to cup our left hand in our right, making a “throne” into which the Body of Christ is placed. We respond strongly with an “Amen” after the minister says, “The Body of Christ.” We then move our right hand out from underneath to pick up the Body of Christ and reverently consume it. For those who are left handed, you may want to cup the right hand in the left, using the left hand to con-sume the Body of Christ. Anyone who is unable to use both hands for some reason (using a cane, holding a child, holding a purse or keys), it is best to receive communion on the tongue.

DEACON KEN’S CORNER We want to congratulate all of those who made their First Communion last week. Just as we need food to stay healthy physically, so we also need the spiritual food Jesus gives us to stay healthy spiritually. Congratulations are also in order for those who received the sacrament of Confirmation at the Cathedral last week. We pray that you will allow the Holy Spirit to guide you in all the decisions you make in your life. From the musical “Carousel” came a song entitled “You Will Never Walk Alone”. It says when we walk through a storm we should not be afraid, for at the end of the storm is a golden sky. Though our dreams be tossed and blown about, we should walk with hope in our heart and we will never be alone. The appeal of that song is easy to understand be-cause it deals with one of the deepest desires and highest hopes of the human heart-the assurance of a Divine Presence that stays beside us in all the experiences of life. Jesus talked about this in today’s gospel when He said: “Anyone who loves me will keep my word, and my Father will love him. We will come to him and make our dwelling with him.” Jesus always spoke of God as a loving Father who never forgets or forsakes His children. Sometimes our thoughts of God run to the theoretical and the far-removed. God is up there in heaven, or God is back there in history. Such thinking is true in so far as it goes but misses the greatest truth of all about God-He is here and now, His presence permeates this moment, He is with us in every experience of our lives. C.S. Lewis said when he gets to heaven and stands in the presence of God, he does not expect a strange face to whom he would say, “Who are you?” He anticipates a familiar face and thinks his response will be, “So it was You all the time.” The face that looks out at us from Scripture is not that of a stranger but a friend. Faith in God is not simply in God as the Creator but experiencing Him as One who walks with us on all the roads of life. How many of us experience God as a daily, living Presence? Faith in Him means being true to His word, sharing His company, especially when we receive Him in the Eucharist, and walking in His way. If we do that, then the words of the song are true: ”You will never walk alone; no you will never walk alone. Have a Blessed Week.

Scripture Reflection Questions

1. What are you most worried or anxious about in your life… how can the Spirit of Christ help in these decisions and bring peace in your heart?

2. When do you feel the most spiritually peaceful? 3. What events or situations in the coming week might call for

the guidance of the Advocate? “The RCIA Coordinators, Cathechists and new Catholics would like to say thanks to all the Parishioners who showed their sup-port by bringing food to Sunday meetings and/or to the Easter

Vigil Reception!”
