Prepare For Next Sunday’s Readings

In next Sunday’s Gospel, (January 24) it is told

with a great sense of urgency and immediacy.

Jesus is a person of action, and events occur in

rapid succession. We see this in today’s Gospel.

Time is of the essence; the fishermen immediately

put aside their livelihood to become Jesus’

disciples. The Kingdom of God is here and now.

The time of fulfillment is at hand.

SCRIPTURE READINGS

Jonah 3:1-5, 10: God spared the people of

Nineveh because they heeded the message God

sent through Jonah.

1 Corinthians 7:29-31: Paul warns the

Corinthians that they must act differently because

the world in its present form is passing away. Mark 1:14-20: Jesus calls the fishermen, Simon

and Andrew, James and John, to be his disciples.

A Pilgrim’s Progress…..

This week as our nation honors the memory of Dr. Martin

Luther King, Jr., it is also the Week of Prayer for Christian

Unity. Sadly we also observe the 48th anniversary of the

tragic Roe vs. Wade and Doe vs. Bolton U.S. Supreme

Court decisions enabling well over 50 Million abortions in

the U.S. at any time during pregnancy for any reason.

In a year that has witnessed the closing of our churches, the

destruction of family owned businesses in cities across our

nation, the U.S. Capitol itself under siege, and other

unimaginable attacks on LIFE, Dr. King’s legacy of Christ

centered non-violent response cries out for imitation.

In Dr. King’s August 1963 “Letter from Birmingham Jail”

he challenged eight white religious leaders who had been

critical of his work for desegregation and simple justice for

African-Americans. Like many principled voices before

him Dr. King had been imprisoned as a participant in a

nonviolent demonstration. As Americans continue to fight

for religious freedom, racial equality, and legal protection

for every human person Dr. King’s words never go out of

date:

“Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.”

“there are just laws and there are unjust laws. I would

agree with St. Augustine that “an unjust law is no law at

all.” “what is the difference between the two? A just law

squares with the moral law, or the law of God. An unjust

law is out of harmony with the moral law. “to put it in the

terms of St. Thomas Aquinas an unjust law is not rooted in

eternal and natural law.”

Dr. King’s words and public legacy challenges people of

Faith and all people of good will to seek justice and peace

in the eternal goods that as Christians we believe God has

written in every human heart. Unity is not a man-made

reality. E Pluribus Unum, Latin for Out of Many One,

appears as a motto on the Great Seal of the U.S. but it is

certainly a “work in progress.” As Christians we believe

that the Holy Trinity, three divine persons in one God, both

models and empowers the unity that we seek. We live the

oneness we are called to most fully by participating in the

life of God. As Catholics we do that by sharing worthily in

the Holy Eucharist which is the Word Made Flesh for us.

It is the Sacrament of Christ’s Body and Blood that unites

us not only to God but to all those who belong to God. We

are never any closer to any member of “the Body of

Christ” (in heaven, on earth, or in purgatory) than when we

share in the Holy Eucharist. Luke’s Gospel (12:48)

reminds us that to “everyone to whom much is given, will

much be required.” As Catholic Christians we have been

given immeasurable gifts in the sacramental life. Let us

continue to fight the good fight for life and justice for every

child of God. Deo Vindice, fr john

Life Defenders Workshop

The Pro-Life Message Made Simple and

Compelling

Many people reject or are indifferent to the pro-life

view simply because they’ve never heard it

presented in compelling manner. The Life

Defenders Workshop is designed to equip you to

communicate the pro-life message intelligently &

graciously without the need of vitriol and angry

dialogue. By focusing on two crucial questions,

What are the preborn? & What makes humans

valuable?, you’ll learn to simplify the abortion

debate and to refute logical fallacies of pro-choice

rhetoric in a compelling manner.

Our workshop leader will be Mike Spencer,

president of Project LifeVoice. Mike considered

himself “pro-choice” until shortly after coming to

faith in Christ in 1983 when the church he attended

showed the pro-life film, The Silent Scream. Upon

being confronted with the reality of abortion, Mike

became deeply convicted and prayed for God’s

forgiveness, offering himself as a voice for the

unborn. Mike travels extensively throughout the

United States equipping pro-lifers on high school

and university campuses, in churches and serving as

the keynote at pro-life banquets and conferences.

Mike is a gifted and much sought-after

communicator who has a passion to equip others to

speak to the often emotional and divisive issue of

abortion in way that is both gracious and kind.

Immaculate Conception Parish is grateful to be hosting

a Life Defenders Workshop on Saturday January 30th

from 10 A.M. – 1:00 P.M. While especially geared for

high school and college youth it will be open to all

ages. Because of space limitations we will be life

streaming the workshop to non youth group

participants. If you are interested in viewing this

workshop please contact the parish office with your

email address.

Dear Partners and Friends,

Thank you all so very much for all of the

wonderful donations & support! We pray many

blessings are returned to you! We simply could

not be here to who what we do without you! You

truly make a difference.
