siempre.

P. Joachim Lepcha

I stand at the foot the Cross

As we raise the blessed palm branches in our hands and we sing Hosanna to the King on this Palm Sunday or rather appropriately let us call it “Passion Sunday,” we wonder how in the very short period of your life, you puzzled the doctors by healing all kinds of infirmities; you calmed the sea, raised the dead, fed the thousands of people; and finally you were nailed on the Cross and removed the sting of death forever. You, our Eternal Physician and Councilor. Herod could not kill you; Satan could not seduce you; death could not destroy you; and the grave could not hold you.

Now I know why I am raising my voice in awe and wonder, why I call you our Savoir and my Lord! So, we are not ashamed of singing, “Hosanna to the King!” But our view changes like the leaves of spring forest, our love is fake, so much so even our Hosanna singing words and tone changes into “Crucify him.” Our fickleness twisted our minds and hearts. For we never fully focused on You, and we never tried to come to You and understand your love. We want to weep like Saint Peter, with streams of tears, with a repentant and contrite heart, like that crucified man beside your cross who understood your love. Since you alone died for our sins and your love for us is eternal; You understand our weaknesses and our human nature, we come to You to look at your Cross and surrender everything to You.

As we stand at the foot of the Cross, we admit that we are the cause of your passion. As we listen to the Passion reading from the Gospel of Mark (Mark 14:1-15:47) this narrative will be helpful to recognize ourselves both as persecutors and victims. All human criminality is exposed as well as every type of human suffering displayed.

As we journey in the passion of Christ during this Holy Week, we find ourselves in the part of betrayer, denial, and desertation. We find ourselves in the loneliness and silent suffering in the Garden with Jesus. We find ourselves in the midst of sweating blood of those who suffer from the neurotic to the AIDS patient; from the bleeding babies after the abortion, from the unemployed person to the scam-tainted politician, and from the criminal to the saint.

We hear the violence, cruelty, wickedness, the twisted and perverse semblance of justice, the setting up of false witnesses, and the fickleness of an ungrateful mob. Amidst, we have cried out like Jesus, “My God, why have you forsaken me?” (Mark 15:34.) We always ask this question, “Why should I suffer, and why should all this be happening to me? The answer we will find in Holy Week, especially the celebration of the Triduum. The Easter Triduum begins with the Vigil of Holy Thursday. It marks the end of the forty days of Lent and the beginning of the three-day celebration of the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ - Holy Thursday, Good Friday, and Easter Vigil/Easter Sunday.

The Fathers of the Second Vatican Council reminded us of the extraordinary significance of the Triduum: "Christ redeemed us all and gave perfect glory to God principally through his paschal mystery: dying He destroyed our death and rising He restored our life. Therefore, the Easter Triduum of the passion and resurrection of Christ is the culmination of the entire liturgical year." (General Norms for the Liturgical Year and the Calendar, # 18)

IMMACULATE CONCEPTION CHURCH March 28, 2021

Did you know? Abusive behavior is nonconsensual The term “consensual” implies that a person freely agrees to do something and understands what they are consenting to do. When it comes to child abuse, no child can give consent, or freely agree, to engage in inappropriate behavior with an older person – however children can be manipulated such that it appears they have consented in some way out of deference to the abuser’s authority. This is why abuse often involves misuse or abuse of power over a victim and can be accomplished through a range of inappropriate behaviors that give the abuser the upper hand. To read more from the VIRTUS® article “Early Identification is Crucial,” visit https://lacatholics.org/did-you-know/.

HOLYWEEK For the Palm Sunday Gospel, we return to the Gospel according to Mark. The account of the Passion takes up nearly one-third of Mark’s entire Gospel and, of all the evangelists, he is the one who presents the details most graphically. He depicts the humanity of Jesus most intensely, describing his sufferings thoroughly. Mark portrays Jesus as a complete fulfillment of the “Suffering Servant” of Isaiah, the obedient, humble slave dying on a cross of whom Paul speaks in Philippians. But it is important to remember that we call this “Holy Week” and not “sad week” or “suffering week,” for each of the readings today, even the lamentations of the psalm, end in the promise of the strength and hope that is granted by God to those who faithfully give of themselves in love. As we enter into this week through these readings, we must reflect deeply on the sufferings of Jesus, but still be confident in the joy of risen, eternal life that awaits all of us who faithfully walk with him through these days.
