St. Francis de Sales: “On Cordiality”

[Regarding God’s command that we love or neighbor] The bearing with imperfections of our neighbor is one of the principal points of this love: Our Lord, Who had a heart so gentle towards us and loved us so dearly, showed this to us on the Cross; to us, I say, and even to those who caused His death, and were in the act of the most enormous sin that man could ever commit. For the sin that the Jews committed was a monster of wickedness; and nevertheless, our sweet Savior had thoughts of love for them, giving us an example quite beyond imagination, in excusing those who were crucifying and insulting Him with a most barbarous rage; and seeking out inventions to obtain from His Father their pardon even in the act of sin and inju-ry. O how miserable we are, we worldly people! For hardly can we forget an injury that has been done to us, long after we received it. Yet he who meets his neighbor with the benedictions of sweetness is the most perfect imitator of Our Lord.

The Feast of the Purification — The Presentation — Candlemas Day Some great feast days of the Church come to have the suffix –mas added to their names. Christmas and Michaelmas, for instance, signify the Mass offered in honor of Christ’s birth and the Mass offered on the day of St. Michael the Archangel. So Candlemas Day, February 2, might be said to mean the “Mass of the Candles.” It coincides in date and meaning with the Feast of the Purification of the Blessed Mother in the Temple on the 40th day after she gave birth to the Christ Child in Beth-lehem. On that day, the Blessed Mother entered the Temple precincts with St. Joseph to complete the ritual purification pre-scribed by the Law of Moses for women who had give birth 40 days previous, and to offer the poor people’s sacrifice on be-half of their newborn first son. Simeon, the priest, took the Divine Infant in his arms, and prophesied that He was “the Light unto the revelation of the nations.” Thus it is that light is the dominant idea of this Mass on the Feast of the Purification. The arrival in the Temple of this light of God, of Whom St. John writes “erat ille lux...erat lux vera” — He was Himself the light...He was the true Light” — marks the conclusion of the entire Christmas Season. At the Purification, the aged prophet Simeon told Mary that a sword would pierce her heart “that the thoughts of many hearts might be revealed.” It is as though the thoughts, the intentions, the cares of all the faithful are virtually enclosed in Mary’s own Immaculate Heart. Thus, we should all ask Mary to keep in her Immaculate Heart all those intentions that are near and dear to us.

Feast of the Purification of the Blessed Virgin Mary, or Candlemas Day

Ant. After the days of the purification of Mary were fulfilled, according to the Law of Moses, they carried Jesus to Je-rusalem to present Him to the Lord. V. A light to the revelation of the Gentiles. R. And the glory of Thy people Israel. Let us pray: Almighty and everlasting God, we humbly beseech Thy majesty that as Thine only-begotten Son was this day presented in the Temple in the substance of our flesh, so we also may, with purified hearts, be presented unto Thee. Through the same Christ our Lord. Amen.

Act of Consecration to the Immaculate Heart of Mary O Mary, Virgin most powerful and Mother of mercy, Queen of Heaven and Refuge of sinners, we consecrate ourselves to thine Immaculate Heart. We consecrate to thee our very being and our whole life: all that we have, all that we love, all that we are. To thee we give our homes, our families, our country. We desire that all that is in us and around us may belong to thee, and may share in the benefits of thy motherly blessing. And that this act of consecration may be truly efficacious and lasting, we renew this day at thy feet the promises of our Baptism and our first Holy Communion. We pledge ourselves to profess bravely and at all times the truths of our Holy Faith, and to live as befits Catholics. We pledge ourselves to keep the commandments of God and His Church, in particular to keep holy the Lord’s Day. We likewise pledge ourselves to make the consoling practices of the Catholic religion, and above all Holy Communion, a central part of our lives, insofar as we shall be able to do so. Finally, we promise thee, O glorious Mother of God and loving Mother of men, to devote ourselves wholeheartedly to the service of thy blessed veneration in order to hasten and assure, through the queenship of thine Immaculate Heart, the coming of the Kingdom of the Sacred Heart of thy dear Son, in our own hearts and in those of all men, in our country and in all the world, as in heaven, so on earth. Amen.

Thanks for your support! + Catholics believe that the church is the House of Prayer and that the Blessed Sacrament in the tabernacle is the Real Presence of Jesus Christ, His body and blood, soul and divinity. Therefore, we rightly require that all who enter this church show great respect by the way they behave and the way they dress. + Traditional standards of dress require that ladies wear dresses, or full skirts and blouses. Hemlines must be long enough to touch the floor when kneeling, and to reach at least below the kneecap when standing or sitting. Necklines must be no more than two finger-widths below the collarbone. Slit skirts are not acceptable (a skirt is too tight if it needs to be slit to allow walk ing). Ladies are also required to wear a suitable head-covering while in church. Women wearing slacks, sleeveless dresses (including “capped” sleeves, which are not sleeves at all) or low necklines are not suitably dressed to receive Holy Com- munion. They should not even enter the church if their dress is immodest. + Gentlemen also must wear modest and decent clothing in church. Men must wear dress slacks and dress shirt, preferably with suit coat and tie. If their attire is immodest or indecent, they should not enter the church. + Flip-flops, shorts, sweats, and T-shirts are not acceptable attire in the church. The wearing of revealing, tight-fitting and trans parent garments of sheer material is forbidden. + Please do not come to receive Holy Communion at this church today if you do not meet these standards. Rather, please return more appropriately attired. Furthermore: Anyone who adheres to the erroneous teachings of Father Leonard Feeney and Saint Benedict Center (denying the Church’s teaching concerning “baptism of desire” and “baptism of blood”), or who worships at religious services conducted by any of the Thuc bishops and their clergy, must not receive Holy Communion at Immaculate Conception Church. Please discuss this with our priests. + No one may carry a firearm (CCW) at the church or school without written authorization signed by Fr.
