Carrara, NovemberThe Apuan-Versilian district and the Italian companies in general have proven, with facts, to be consistent and that they know how to work hard in support of Italian exports on such a key market as the United States. After rumours about the alleged radioactivity of granite were spread by the US press and immediately relayed by the international press, a strategy began in response to such rumours on all the available media, to explain and restore the truth on the reliability of granite, which is attacked by synthetic or artificial products.Italian producers, under the coordination of Internazionale Marmi e Macchine Carrara, joined forces against the attacks to dimensional stone and supported the prestigious

Marble Institute of America (MIA) with the activation of a communication strategy, using funds provided by producers from all over the world.Since August, the scientific community and granite producers have been conducting tests to find scientific grounds, which are essential to dispel any doubt on the existence of any health danger associated with the use of granite in residential applications. At the same time, producers began a fund-raising campaign to support the plan, and so far they have collected 750,000 USD with which they will fund the Truth about granite campaign in the USA, in order to reassure about the safety and performance of granite. The campaign is supported by companies across the world and was launched by MIA, which is monitoring its results and liaising with the international marble community. The Italian industry, especially the Apuan-Versilian district, have proven to be ready and determined, by taking up MIA's appeal and contributing to fund these initiatives to provide correct information about dimensional materials and their applications to designers and end users, especially in the United States, which is a key destination for Italian marble.Internazionale Marmi e Macchine, which for thirty years has been engaged in strategic campaigns for the

promotion of dimensional stone, coordinated the meetings of Italian producers who were busy developing a shared response strategy to support the initiative and immediately sent 20,000 USD to the Truth about granite fund ($ 10,000 from IMM + $ 10,000 from CarraraMarmotec). Over the last few days, MIA presented the first results of the activities carried out by Truth about granite: in just two months' time, it has raised over 750,000 USD, given by over 150 companies, about 15% of them based in Italy. The president of the Marble Institute, Jim Hogan, during a meeting with IMM's president Giorgio Bianchini, pointed out the company's role and commitment in the protection and promotion of dimensional stone and announced that the Association will attend

CarraraMarmotec in 2010 with a big delegation.“It will be an important event, and we are proud of this choice – comments president Giorgio Bianchini – in the meantime we will go on supporting the Italian companies and cooperating with the international bodies. We want to support, with a clear, shared strategy, an industry which is a jewel in the crown of Italian-made products and needs a wide involvement of companies and associations to assert its competitiveness through joint promotional campaigns targeted to designers and end users.”In the latest issue of its magazine, the Institute published a page in which it thanks “all those who have contributed to the Truth about granite” fund, which is sponsored, in addition to CarraraFiere and Internazionale Marmi e Macchine Carrara, also by Antolini Luigi & C., Bonotti Stone Trading, Bruno Lucchetti marmi e graniti, Eurotrading SpA, G.M.C. di Grassi Luciano, Giovanni D'Angiolo (Querceta – Lucca), Grein Italia, Henraux Spa; La Ponte Spa; M+Q Italia (Carrara), Magti Italia Spa, Marcolini Marmi, Marmi e Graniti CEV Spa; Marmi Graniti Favorita Spa; Max Marmi Carrara Srl; Metro Spa Marmi e Graniti; Pisani Brothers (Carrara), Red Graniti Group of Companies (Massa), Santucci Armando Srl, SAVEMA Spa (Pietrasanta); V.Fontanili Srl (Carrara).

For quite some time by now, it has become compulsory to put the EC stone mark on all finished products made of natural stone (both indoor and outdoor facings and floorings), and, without such legal tag, they cannot be traded or used within the European Community.Since the enforcement of the EC legislation, to stick the EC tag on to these products it has been compulsory to state the features of such materials and conduct a factory production test. To be able to use such mark, the producer must have a certificate of compliance, and the company that intends to work in compliance with the legislation should therefore state the features of the material, such as its water absorption, compressive strength or flexural strength. These features must be determined and certified by specific tests in accordance with the European legislation and, to work properly, a company must have and implement a production control system. To help the companies start adjusting to the new legislation which, if unmet, would lead to fines, commercial and even criminal proceedings, depending on the member country, Internazionale Marmi e Macchine has developed a special software called GaSTONE which enables the companies to immediately start applying the EC marking once they have the results of the first type tests on the processed materials and suitable instruments for their factory production controls. Even the latter can be provided by IMM at the companies’ request. IMM Carrara, through its International Stone information Centre (ISIC) and a team of highly qualified professionals, offers turnkey assistance to those companies that have not met the marking regulations yet, both in terms of ITT (Initial Type Testing), under special agreements with test laboratories, and FPC (Factory Production Control) as provided by the legislation. This service is guaranteed by the specific expertise that IMM has gained through its participation in the Italian and European standardisation bodies, where regulations are discussed and amended from time to time. “Companies dealing with stone for which the marking is by now a specific provision of the European legislation – comments Giorgio Bianchini, president of IMM – will be able to place their name beside that of Internazionale Marmi e Macchine, a highly specialised companies that is known all over the world for its work in promotion and technical support, which offers both companies and professionals the opportunity to be guided in fulfilling their legal formalities by a facility that can boast specific experience and an international reputation”. GaSTONE is the EC stone-marking programme.Internazionale Marmi e Macchine presents its stone-marking software.

International Award organizzato dall'Internazionale

Asiatiche a Nizza.

Kenzo Tange, (Osaka 1913 Tokyo 2005)

Tange is one of the greatest names of Japanese post-war architecture. He received a commission to rebuild Hiroshima

and designed the famous swimming-pool for the 1964 Tokyo Olympics. In Italy, he worked at the design of the office

districts of Naples and Bologna. In San Donato Milanese, he designed a whole neighbourhood, called "Le Torri

Lombarde", and some of ENI's buildings. His innumerable works include the 243-metre-high skyscraper that houses the

Metropolitan Government of Tokyo, the International Expo of Osaka, the Park Tower of Shinjuku where the "Grand Hyatt"

Hotel is based, the Catholic Cathedral of Tokyo and the new HQ of Fuji TV, on the artificial island of Odaiba.

Kenzo Tange, (Osaka 1913 Tokyo 2005)

On its 1998 European year, the Marble International

Award (MAA) organised by Internazionale Marmi e

Macchine awarded first prize to Kenzo Tange for the

Departmental Museum of Asian Arts built in Nice.

The Japanese architect, one of the greatest names of

twentieth-century design and a great champion of the

use of marble, deserves a special mention for one of his

greatest works, made to house classical and

contemporary works in a subtle harmony of marble,

glass and steel. Its architecture is unique: four marble

towers linked up by transparent bridges combine into a

lightweight construction, while the layout of the Museum

relies on two basic geometrical shapes of the Japanese

tradition: the square, the symbol of the earth, and the

circle, the symbol of heaven.

Forms spring out of a common source, as if born of the

splitting of a cell, whilst the generation of the forms by a

mutual separation of the voids, the real essence of

architecture, spawns waves that follow one another until

they meet the surrounding nature. In this evolution, the

source moves all the time and, by duplicating itself,

defines a new centre of natural balance, generating an

ellipse. The ensuing crescent successfully embodies the

balance and dynamism of the whole composition.

The jury awarded the prize to Kenzo Tange for his use of

stone, pointing out that “the architect wanted to use a

sound, lasting material that needed no maintenance.

White Carrara marble was chosen for the setting of the

Museum, which “floats” on water as a “snow-white

swan”. Marble adds importance and prestige to the

building, and the colour white, a neutral canvas, is ideal

to display works of art, as noble as the marble that gets

better with time and strengthens the dialectic relationship

between materials and spaces”.

THE THIRD STEP OF PROGETTO IMMAGINE MARMO TOSCANA STARTING NOWAfter five months’ development, the "Business Tour" is about to begin. The project is coordinated by Internazionale Marmi e Macchine on behalf of the Region Tuscany and the Italian Trade Commission. Fifteen Tuscan companies joined in.

didattici articolati in cinque ore settimanali.

altri eventi promozionali.

We are at “stage three” of “Progetto Immagine Marmo Toscana”, a free training course that has been

joined in by fifteen Tuscan companies in order to contribute to the repositioning of their products on

the high end of the market, through courses about materials and by improving the companies’

expertise to make them more competitive on the foreign markets.

The project was developed by the Italian Trade Commission in conjunction with Internazionale Marmi

e Macchine, lasts five months and consists of three steps: the first one was about classroom training

about foreign markets, the second one involved tailor-made on-the-field assistance, and the third one,

which is about to begin, is a Business Tour of the most interesting markets.

The course was held in the IMM headquarters in Marina di Carrara; each classroom course was

composed of ten educational modules, held five hours a week.

The subjects taught during the first cycle of lectures ranged from International trade techniques to

"Distribution and pricing, including Funding in support of internationalisation.

Special modules were also developed, about Industry marketing, Quality and System certifications,

marks, patents and EC marking.

At the end of the course, three special workshops were held to provide in-depth information on

specific countries, one on the United States, one on the Gulf region, and the third one on Russia.

Each workshop tackled the regulatory, financial, tax and administrative systems, the macroeconomic

scenario, business opportunities, intercultural approach and negotiation techniques of each area.

Lecturers were selected by the Italian Trade Commission.

After the tailor-made on-the-field assistance, during which each company had to develop its own

internationalisation plan under expert guidance, the third step, the so-called Business Tour, is about to

begin; the project will include one-week visits to the foreign markets of interest.

The Business Tour will include business meetings, institutional meetings and tours in cooperation with

the local Italian Trade Commission offices; it may also include industry fairs and other promotional

events.

Exports of marble and granite down in the first six months of 2008Different trends according to different products; cause of worry the reduction in the average value of products exported although in Europe this is rising. Difficult to forecast markets in view of the very difficult international economic recession.

the first six months of 2008 the natural stone industry exported 1 million 610 thousand tons, for a value of 849 million 890 thousand euro, with a -1,7% reduction in quantity and -4,8% reduction in value compared to the same period in 2007. These are the figures published by the Internazionale Marmi e Macchine Carrara, having processed the Istat data available, limiting assessments to the higher value products (marble, granite and travertine, raw materials and finished products) and not products such as chips, powders and slate. If the comparison between the first six months of 2008 and the first six months of 2007 were to include the latter products too the IMM research office claims there would be much higher reductions in terms of quantity and value (see table enclosed Exports Italy All Countries).

These are significant reductions in that they amount to a loss in average value per ton of exports of -3,1% and the comparison between 2007 and 2008 shows positive results in terms of blocks and slabs and negative results in terms of finished products (in particular granite) even though it is difficult to establish to what extent the dollar euro relationship influenced the profitability of the finished products exported, especially in North America. The average value of finished Italian products confirmed its growth trend for almost all products to the European Union (particularly marble and travertine) as well as the rest of the Continent while the average value of marble and travertine exported to North America rose by approximately +9% per ton. In this six-month period there emerges a very varied picture that is difficult to interpret since it contains positive and negative elements yet in general the situation is tending to get worse. “The deterioration of the international financial and economic picture is leading to increasing uncertainty and is influencing the reading of the information available which may be useful – commented the IMM Chairman Giorgio Bianchini – to assess the developments underway and those to come over the next few months in terms of the individual markets and types of products. It is clear that in the first six months of 2008 the Italian stone industry

experienced serious difficulties, especially on certain markets that count. However, although the situation is predominantly negative there are also positive aspects and the absolute figures remain high, thereby showing the strength of the industry and its capacity to face crises. This is the case even when they are as aggressive as the crisis which has been affecting the financial and economic sectors and credit facilities to the building industry in countries such as the United States that is the most important and most profitable market for Italian producers.” A more detailed analysis of the most important areas shows in the European Union for example that exports are down compared to the same period in 2007 both in terms of volume (not much more than 407 thousand tons for the major products, -12,4% compared

to 2007) and value (281 million 650 thousand euro, with a fall of -5,1% on 2007). This is because even if the euro has protected its average values and safeguarded the quality of its exports, the most important countries have recorded significant reductions, starting from Germany (approx. -20% both in value and volume), with marble (and travertine) finished products alone showing slightly positive results. Among the most important partners for Italian exports, Spain, the Netherlands, Ireland, the Czech Republic and Belgium all show negative results while there are different results for individual products in Austria, Sweden and the United Kingdom.France and Poland retained positive levels while the extra EU countries which remained important, albeit with reduced volumes and increased values, were Russia, Turkey, Croatia and Ukraine. Worthy of note as a separate case is Switzerland that preferred granite finished products but showed reduced average and absolute values. In North America, where exports also included Canada which showed positive results in terms of marble, the decline is heavy, concerns all products and the only figures which managed to keep their ground were the average values for marble finished products which amounted to over 106 million euro. The United States remain the major market, accounting for over 22% of Italy's exports to the

If the comparison between the first six months of 2008 and the first six months of 2007 were to include the latter products too the IMM research office claims there would be much higher reductions in terms of quantity and value (see table enclosed Exports Italy All Countries).

tune of 197 million 700 thousand euro, including all products. Nothing new for South and Central America where Italian exports have never really achieved significant levels. In actual fact total exports in the industry towards the sub-continent do not reach 20 million euro in the six-month period. All in all the Middle East is less negative: the entire area does not fluctuate, the average value of exports remain more or less stable with positive results in terms of finished marble and travertine products. The role of Saudi Arabia is important in this scenario as is that of Qatar, while the leading partner, the Emirates, finished the six-month period with negative results for all products compared to the previous year. The trend in the Far East was not very encouraging either even though the two major countries, India and China, recorded growth figures. These however are very limited for the potential size of the markets and moreover they are partners requesting mainly raw materials and semi-finished products from Italy, above all (85% of the figures for China and approx,.62% for India). Hong Kong and Singapore recovered slightly while Japan's imports fell, not even reaching 4 million euro over all products compared to the already modest 9 and a half last year.Worthy of a separate note are imports that in the six-month period brought 1 million 500 thousand tons of stone (raw materials and finished products) for a value of almost 290 million euro, 177 of

which (61%) of granite, mainly blocks and slabs. Comparison with the first six months of 2007 shows negative figures, -11,7% in volume and -9,3% in value for all products and it is above all the trend concerning blocks and slabs of granite which shows a significant drop both in terms of quantity (-24,8%) and value (-22,3%), while the imports of finished granite products remained positive as did those of other finished stone products.Of interest too is the fact that out of a total of 35 million euro of granite finished products imported from all countries, approximately 20 come from China and India, with an annual increase of +14,2% in terms of quantity and +16,6% in value. Despite the market difficulties, once again it is granite in blocks and slabs that is the most important imported product with over 142 million euro for 644

thousand tons. The major supplier remains India despite the drop of -27% in value, followed by Brazil and then South Africa while there is an interestintg new feature which comes from central-southern Africa with the growth of Angola and Mozambique, once again exporters of granite and stone after a very long break due to internal problems. In particular Mozambique has equalled Zimbabwe in terms of value and has exceeded it in terms of colume while Angola has lower average values per ton. With regard to “marble blocks” the 2007 producers were once again confirmed in 2008 with Egypt remaining as Italy's leading supplier, albeit with a reduction compared to last year, closely followed by Turkey whose figures are growing. Positive performances too from other suppliers such as Tunisia, Iran and Macedonia. Hence, a difficult overall picture with some stability but many reasons for apprehension added to the general situation which spares no-one since the economic model is largely based on the USA's capacity to drive consumption and move resources. It is difficult to imagine a return of the same economic model as that of the last decades with such significant deregulation and centralisation of countries since globalisation, as many believe, brings about “multicentralisation” that is already obvious in the natural stone industry.
