The message is clear! For too long, there have been complaints about the lack of diversity on news programs. TV One continues to rise to the occasion. We now have News One Now with Roland Martin. Now I am not asking you to be as anal as I am but I am urging you to give this show a chance. As a long time supporter of TV One, I am proud of their efforts to bring quality programming to the airwaves. I ask all carriers if they have TV One, BET and the Africa cannel. If they say “No,” I tell them they had better get their programming together.TV One needs and deserves our support. Heck, Roland Martin does too. It’s amazing how folks will give their support when it hasn’t been earned. Hopefully you will tune in, tell your friends and support the advertisers.Read further:

SILVER SPRING, MD - News One Now, the first morning news program in history to focus on news and analysis of politics, entertainment, sports, and culture from an explicitly African American perspective, will premiere on TV One Monday, November 4 at 9AM/ET.

Roland Martin, the 2013 National Association of Black Journalists' Journalist of the Year and former host of TV One's long-running, award-winning weekly news program, "Washington Watch with Roland Martin", leads News One Now doing what he does best: sifting through the headlines of the day to spotlight matters that greatly impact the African American community. News One Now is an evolution of the award winning digital brand NewsOne.com. Launched in 2008, NewsOne.com has seen meteoric growth, currently reaching two million African Americans every month. The television show represents a blend of digital and broadcast, leveraging the engaged audience of NewsOne.com and featuring an interactive, immersive experience. Enlisting the help of news makers, media stars, authors, celebrities, filmmakers, comedians and others, News One Now will be a jam-packed, live one-hour weekday morning news program driven by news headlines, on-set panelists, Skype-net interviews, social media integration, standing segments and discussion of the top mainstream media stories of the day, as well as more obscure stories that touch the African American audience nationwide.

In addition to the telecast, News One Now will be streamed live on Radio One. Each weekday morning, News One Now will kick off via its radio platform at 7AM/ET, airing on Radio One network stations in select U.S. markets. Entering its third hour at 9AM/ET, the radio program will simulcast on its TV One television platform, which will be broadcast from the heart of Washington D.C. from a state-of-the-art studio that offers a stunning view of the Capitol building. Audiences can continue their experience 24/7 with exclusive program content and extended editorial on NewsOne.com and the NewsOne mobile app available in both iOS and Android.  Social interaction is at the heart of the show and incorporates conversations from facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and Vine, among others, using the hash tag #NewsOneNow.

"Filling a glaring gap in the current cable news programming landscape, News One Now builds off our online success, extending our presence to a complete multi-platform

experience where we can serve the African American audience with news and analysis that is specially curated to suit their needs, concerns, interests and passions," said Alfred Liggins, chairman of TV One and CEO and president of Radio One.

"Our program will not only keep Black America abreast of major breaking news and hot-button issues, it will also shed light on peripheral stories that spotlight events and individuals making a concentrated, positive impact in our communities," said Martin. "Our audience can not only expect to be informed, but also enlightened and inspired."

On Monday, October 28th at 8:00pm, Dallas’ hit storytelling series Oral Fixation (An Obsession with True Life Tales) will kick off its third season at AT&T Performing Arts Center with an evening of juicy, truth-y stories on the theme “Bun in the Oven.”

From all points of view on pregnancy to the trials and tribulations of building a pizza empire, this Season 3 opener is sure to open your heart with its bold true-tales.

Highlights include Cane Rosso's owner Jay Jerrier's unconventional journey to becoming the "Pope of Pizza," a woman's shocking discovery that she had multiple buns in the oven, and a new father's perspective on a harrowing delivery.  And don't miss Oral Fixation’s creator and TEDxSMU speaker Nicole Stewart sharing her powerful story of losing a baby at 22 weeks pregnant.  “Bun in the Oven” is an excellent way to get acquainted with this uniquely satisfying and entertaining series in its new digs!

Oral Fixation is now taking story submissions for all Season 3 shows.  No writing or performing experience is necessary but stories must be true and on theme.  For details and deadlines, visit the submissions page on www.oralfixationshow.com.

On October 19, producer/director/editor Nicole Stewart spoke at the 5th anniversary of TEDxSMU about the power of sharing your story.  In August, she spoke about her creative inspiration for the “Light My Fire” PechaKucha event at the Nasher Museum in celebration of the Texas Sculpture Association’s 30th anniversary.  Stewart has been profiled as one of Dallas’ 30 Most Interesting People and awarded Best Future Arts Leader, both by Dallas Observer.   She is a graduate of The Hockaday School and Northwestern University.

All shows will be held at Hamon Hall in the Winspear Opera House, 2403 Flora Street, Dallas, TX 75201.  It’s a big red building visible from Woodall Rogers freeway.  Park underground in the Lexus Red garage (accessible from Jack Evans Street) or behind One Arts Plaza.   $25 individual tickets and season passes can be purchased at the Center’s box office at 2353 Flora Street, by phone at (214) 880-0202, or online through www.oralfixationshow.com.  Group and student discounts are available.

“Bun in the Oven” to kick off Season 3 $500,000 in additional budget cuts hit Urban League

The Urban League of Greater Dallas will serve fewer clients under the Community Service Block Grant (CSBG) due to a $500,000 cut in the budget for 2013 and 2014.

"This massive cut in next year's budget will result in reductions in staff as well as limiting supportive services to clients," said Dr. Beverly Mitchell-Brooks, President and CEO. "This means we will serve several thousand fewer people through next year."

This is just one set back the League is facing. The shutdown in the government has also caused the League's reimbursement to be delayed which affects all agency programs and services which now comes on top of the sequester effect. "This comes at a time when we are trying to maintain core services and build for the future with the Industry Training Center," said Dr. Mitchell-Brooks.

Additionally, the League's ability to provide continuous free services will be impacted, particularly rent, mortgage and utility assistance, employment services and the amount of #nancial support will be reduced.

Traditionally, the agency's CSBG program has provided assistance to clients who receive other support. But, with the deep cuts proposed to the SNAP (Food Stamps) and Head Start Programs, people at or below 125% of the poverty guidelines are left with severely limited options in order to maintain a stable home environment. This safety net, that the nearly 450,000 Dallas residents who are poor depend on to help them maintain and retain basic living conditions, is greatly affected. "It is hard for citizens to choose between feeding their children or paying their rent because they have lost one of two of their minimum wage jobs," said Dr. Mitchell-Brooks. "Most of the working poor must work two jobs in this current economy just to make ends meet."

The Urban League and its centers in Dallas, Garland, Pleasant Grove and Irving served over 30,000 individuals and families last year by providing free programs and services including computer classes, case management, #nancial support, employment and housing assistance and services to Veterans.

The tea party effort to torpedo health-care reform at the federal level has been repelled, but only after the campaign shut down the government, threatened default on the U.S. debt and cost the country billions. But that victory should not blind us to how destructive the rejectionists have been at the state level. In the name of states’ rights, right-wing governors and legislators will leave some 8 million impoverished and low-wage Americans uninsured and ineligible for any assistance. The reason is that the Supreme Court’s conservative majority resuscitated the pernicious doctrine of “states’ rights.”

When they found ObamaCcare constitutional, the majority ruled that states had a “right” to refuse to expand Medicaid. Medicaid expansion was designed to cover the poorest half of those now without health insurance. Under the Affordable Care Act, Medicaid would be expanded to cover those with incomes at or below 138 percent of the federal poverty level (now $19,530 for a family of three). The federal government would pay the full cost until 2016, when states would be asked to pick up only 10 percent of the cost of expansion. Led by Republican governors and legislators, 26 states, including every state in the deep South outside of Arkansas, have thus far refused to support expansion of Medicaid, turning their backs on literally billions in federal subsidies to cover health-care costs for the uninsured (although recently Republican governors in Ohio and Pennsylvania ended their opposition). This is the modern version of George Wallace standing in the schoolhouse door to reject integration. The states rejecting Medicaid expansion have about one-half the nation’s population, but over two thirds of the uninsured poor who’d be eligible under the law. The leading targets are people of color. Two thirds of otherwise eligible and uninsured poor African Americans will be barred from getting affordable health care. Once more, we see the harsh reality

behind “states’ rights.” From the Civil War to the civil rights movement, from slavery to segregation, the argument of states’ rights has been unfurled as the banner of those looking to punish black people. And once more, right-wing leaders are acting against the best interests of their own people and their own states to keep people of color locked out. They would allow poor whites to suffer rather than allow the black poor to benefit. These governors are not standing up for the Constitution. They’re playing the race-bait politics of division once more. And not surprisingly, this reversion to states’ rights is accompanied by systematic state efforts to suppress the vote. Many of the same governors who’ve led the fight against health-care reform are pushing measures that make it harder for poor and working people — disproportionately people of color — to vote. They’ve reduced early voting, ended voting on Sundays, added new ID requirements, closed down convenient polling booths, opposed same-day registration and more. The only way to keep people down is to lock them out. Republican governors, of course, don’t admit the racial poison at the root of their policies. They say their states can’t afford the expansion (even though the federal government picks up the entire tab until 2016 and 90 percent thereafter).

They rail against health-care reform as “social ism,” even though every industrial nation in the world except the U.S. provides affordable health care to its citizens. Gov. Rick Perry of Texas says the Affordable Care Act would reduce Texas to a mere “appendage of federal government.” (Perry apparently doesn’t understand that Texas is a part of the union.) Historically, there has only been one remedy against the use of states’ right to inflict racially poisonous policies, and tha t has been fo rce fu l f ede ra l intervention. It took a Civil War and constitutional amendments to end slavery. It took a civil rights movement and federal legislation to end apartheid in the South. And now poor and working people will need to rise up once more and insist that the federal government step in to make certain that all American have access to affordable health care, no matter what the color of their skin, the amount of their income or the state they live in. The Democratic governors who stood in the schoolhouse door against integration — George Wallace, Orval F a u b u s , R o s s B a r n e t t — a r e remembered in infamy. Now the Republican governors who stand in the hospital door — Rick Scott of Florida, Rick Perry of Texas, Bobby Jindal of Louisiana — will surely end up in the same hall of shame.

Medicaid fight has GOP governors standing in the hospital door

by Avis Thomas-LesterAFRO Executive Editor President Barack Obama has selected Jeh Johnson, a graduate of Morehouse and Columbia Law School, as secretary of the Department of Homeland Security. If confirmed, Johnson, who retired from government to go into private practice, would come to the position with substantial experience, officials said.He served as the Department of Defense’s top lawyer, supervising some 10,000 military and civilian attorneys. He advised Obama and two secretaries of defense and helped to develop several national security policies during Obama’s first term in office. He is credited with leading the review and authorization of the report that led to the repeal in 2010 of the “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy toward homosexuals in the military.

At a brief news conference in the White House Rose Garden, Obama praised Johnson for his experience. He urged the Senate to move quickly to confirm Johnson, who would replace Janet Napolitano, who left the post in July to head the University of California system. “From the moment I took office, Jeh was an absolutely critical member of my national security team, and he demonstrated again and again the qualities that will make him a strong secretary of homeland security,” Obama said. “Jeh has a deep understanding of the threats and challenges facing the United States. As the

Pentagon’s top lawyer, he helped design and implement many of the polities that have kept our country safe, including our success in dismantling the core of al Queda and the Fatah.” He added, “I’m confident I could not make a better choice than Jeh,” he said.

For his part, Johnson indicated he had not lobbied for the position. He said his wife, Susan DiMarco, a dentist, and daughter Natalie, could not attend the announcement because they were in California attending parents’ weekend with his son, Jeh Jr., at Occidental College, where Obama attended for two years.

Johnson hails from a family of devoted public servants. His grandfather, Dr. Charles S. Johnson was a famed sociologist and Harlem Renaissance figure who became the first Black president of historic Fisk University. His uncle. Lt. Robert B. Johnson, was a member of the illustrious Tuskegee Airmen. “Thank you for the tremendous honor of this nomination and the trust you have placed in me to carry out this large and important responsibility as secretary of homeland security,” Johnson said. “I was not looking for his opportunity. I had left government at the end of last year and was settling

back into private life and private law practice. But when I received the call, I could not refuse it.” A source familiar with the nomination said Obama’s selection of Johnson indicates a shift away from immigration as its focus to national security as a priority. If Johnson, whose first name is pronounced “Jay,” is confirmed, four of the major players in the nation’s security would be African Americans—Obama, U.S. Attorney Gen. Eric H. Holder, U.N. Ambassador Susan E. Rice and Johnson. According to a senior Obama administration official, Johnson “was a key decision maker on various legal questions regarding different points of overlap between the Defense Department and the Department of Homeland Security.” The official gave Johnson high marks for leadership and management. Johnson, who hails from New York, said he was in Manhattan on 9/11, his birthday. After the attack, he said, he “wandered the streets of New York…and wondered and asked , ‘What can I do?’ Since then, I’ve tried to devote myself to answering that question. I love this country. I care about the safety of our people. I believe in public service. And I remain loyal to you, Mr. President.” A source familiar with the nomination said Obama’s selection of Johnson indicates a shift away from immigration as its focus to national security as a priority. If Johnson is confirmed, four of the major players in the nation’s security would be African Americans—Obama, U.S. Attorney Gen. Eric H. Holder, U.N. Ambassador Susan E. Rice and Johnson.

Dallas VA Medical Center

opens new suite for Veterans

with Polytrauma/

Traumatic Brain Injury

- With the grand opening of a new suite at Dallas VA Medical Center comes an enhanced system of care for North Texas Veterans with Polytrauma. A ribbon cutting ceremony marked the official opening and provided an inside look at what Polytrauma is and what services are available for Veterans.

Polytrauma is multiple complex injuries that cause physical, cognitive, psychological, and social impairments and functional disabilities. Common injuries in blast-related polytrauma include open wounds, traumatic amputations, spinal injuries, eye conditions, musculoskeletal system disorders, psychiatric problems, and traumatic brain injury (TBI). Veterans with Polytrauma can now benefit from the full spectrum of care offered at VA North Texas Health Care System (VANTHCS), in a patient-centered environment.

“It’s always exciting when we are able to increase access and enhance services for our Veterans,” said Jeffery Milligan, Director, VANTHCS. “Our patient population continues to grow and we stand ready to meet their needs.”

The Polytrauma team provides a full range of medical and support services, and is interdisciplinary consisting of physicians, social workers, neuropsychologists, nurse case manager, blind rehabilitation specialist, physical therapist, occupational therapist, speech language pathologist, recreational therapist, prosthetist, and other disciplines. Other services

include neuro rehabilitation, cognitive rehabilitation, state-of-the-art prosthetics, visual rehabilitation, psychological services, physical and vocational rehabilitation, recreational therapy, and on-going case management.

“We’ve had capabilities to provide high quality care for Veterans with Polytrauma and TBI,” said Richard Robinson, MD, Medical Director of TBI/Polytrauma. “With the opening of the new suite, our efforts have ramped up to provide that care in a more patient-centered atmosphere to enhance the treatment and recovery process.”

Some features of the new suite include:

physical and occupational therapy assessment and training for amputees

vision and balance assessment and treatment

separate treatment room for biofeedback and relaxation training

TBI day program and support group

clinical video telehealth services for Veterans in rural areas

same day assessments for Veterans from the post-deployment clinic

Polytrauma treatment and recovery is serious business, but adding fun elements to the space was an important component of the new design. Fresh colors, upscale furnishings, and custom contemporary artwork were selected for a modern appeal. Local companies and artists contributed giant photographic murals and sculptures. Artwork can be seen throughout the suite that reflects historical and iconic Dallas landmarks. Public areas of the suite include a coffee bar, internet access, and a play area for Veterans with children.

All these features combined make for a patient and family friendly suite where Veterans can feel safe and comfortable. All of which are vital to the treatment and recovery process.

By James A. Washington

Sometimes don’t you find your thoughts regarding religion and spirituality running

together and making very little sense? For me, I am beginning to understand speed is not an essential quality when it comes to enlightenment. Being still is a more preferred state of mind than being quick.

It’s easier to comprehend real meaning at a slower pace. Prayer, peace, intimacy, personal, balance, all of these words have a different impact when I take my time and contemplate how God fits into all things. I’m sure you have heard many a preacher say, suggest, or even question whether or not you have a personal relationship with God or Jesus.

Most of those who profess and claim their salvation in Christ would say of course they do. I know I have. But when I thought about it, I began to wonder, do I really. Enter being still. If you think about it, how do you become personal with another human being, let alone God? Personal relationships are the result of a whole set of shared experiences, and events and challenges between people. Once established, like it or not, personal is a permanent state of being between you and that other person. I just believe the same is true with God.

You can’t be intimate with another human being until you’ve become personal. That’s just a fact. Look at how many relationships start with what you think, or fool yourself into believing, is intimacy; only to find out later that when you want to relate personally, you find yourself trying to relate to a total stranger.

If that happens in this in the secular world, it seems pretty reasonable to see it happening in the spiritual one. In order to become personal, you have to share little secrets and indiscretions and flaws and faults and yes, even sins. Like a close personal friend or lover, you have to confide in the Lord and through Jesus know he’s listening.

When I slow down and deliberately still my consciousness, that’s when it makes sense to pray. Prayer is a personal conversation; the kind that you have with someone who you know cares about you or

whom you truly care about. Prayer is a central mechanism to relate to those things that come into play in crisis moments, love situations, those issues of mind body and yes, soul.

Let’s see. Intimacy can only be achieved by establishing a close personal relationship. A close personal relationship can only be established by a constant consistent attempt to be transparent to someone else; no games, no hidden agendas.

If the truth be told, you couldn’t hide the truth from a really good friend because they know you so well, they see right through your b.s. Prayer then is the conversation, the necessary vehicle through which your personal relationship with the Lord can provide you with real spiritual intimacy; the kind that brings peace and balance, order and rest. I would never say this is easy. I’m just saying it’s easier to get there if you focus on it. God has a wonderful way of reminding us to be still. It doesn’t matter how busy you think you are. God will slow you down and tell you to stop and listen. He wants you and me to expose ourselves to His hugs and kisses. Cry on His shoulders. Ask for His help.

More importantly, recognize his counsel. Much like that of a best friend, it may not be what you want to hear, but it is definitely what you need to hear. You know and so does that friend that the counsel given is grounded in unconditional love for you and it is always based in truth. Maybe you can deal with this on the fly but I can’t. I have to slow down.

I know if I equate my relationship with the Almighty, to the best relationships I’ve had here on earth, I’ve got work to do. There are still conversations (prayers) to be had and things to reveal. My vessel is not yet empty, but I’m working on it in an effort to replace my mess with god’s blessings. I want to be filled with the Holy Spirit and I’m told that being still is a good place to start.

“But Moses said to the people, ‘Do not be afraid, stand firm, and see the deliverance that the Lord will accomplish for you today; for the Egyptians whom you see today you shall never see again. The lord will fight for you, and you have only to be still.” Exodus 14:13-14.

May God bless and keep you always.

NAACP Leaders congratulate LaJune

Montgomery Tabron, New President & CEO

of W.K. Kellogg Foundation

 (Baltimore, MD) – NAACP leaders

congratulated LaJune Montgomery Tabron, former Executive Vice President of Operations and Treasurer at the W.K. Kellogg Foundation, for her appointment to President and CEO of the foundation, effective January 1, 2014.

“I have known LaJune for many years and consider her a friend,” said NAACP Chairman Roslyn M. Brock. “She has been a mission-minded leader at the Kellogg Foundation for decades with a strong track record of international philanthropic leadership in strategic planning, fiscal accountability and championing change. It is also thrilling to see that the Board of Trustees selected the first female and African American to lead the foundation since it was founded in 1930.”

“LaJune Tabron is a powerful choice to lead the W.K. Kellogg Foundation,” stated NAACP President and CEO Benjamin Todd Jealous. “She has worked closely with the Association over the years as the Kellogg Foundation has made a sustained and substantial investment in the NAACP.

“She holds a strong vision of a racially just society where all children can flourish equally.”

“LaJune Tabron is an excellent choice for the Kellogg Foundation,” stated Mississippi NAACP State President and National Board Member Derrick Johnson. “Ms. Tabron has played a huge role in promoting a healthy environment for children in Mississippi."

The NAACP has a close relationship with the W.K. Kellogg Foundation, which supports children, families and communities as they strengthen and create conditions that propel vulnerable children to achieve success as individuals and as contributors to the larger community and society.

Ms. Tabron will become the 12th leader of the 83-year old foundation, replacing Sterling Speirn, who announced he is stepping down on December 31 after heading the foundation for nearly eight years.

Ask Gwendolyn

Baines

My wife is clueless!

Dear Gwendolyn:

I have been married for 14 years. We have two children, age eight and six. I have always had my older child in a school in rich suburbia. My wife does not seem to have good reasoning. If I had known that, I never would have married her. This is the problem: She th inks tha t schoo ls in wea l thy neighborhoods are better schools. I have been attending the town hall meetings held by the school board. Last year I lost my job and unless I soon find employment, we are going to foreclose on our home. My wife recently assured me that if I get to where I cannot afford our children to go to school with the rich, she is going to leave. Gwendolyn, what is your advice?

Jimmy

Dear Jimmy:

Sorry to hear that your wife is not a reasoning woman. So much makes up a marriage other than I love you – and you love me. I think you should continue to see what the school board is going to do about improving the neighborhood school. Your wife could be using your downfall as an excuse to leave. Let me tell you this and please relay it to your wife: Rich people usually have their children in private schools where the tuition is too high for the average worker. Many parents now feel that the public schools in affluent neighborhoods are not doing a good job – in educating the l i t t le Boys and gir ls being transported in via bus. Fight for the improvement of your neighborhood school. Parents make the mistake of seeing their children go all in the same door, not realizing that too often the transported children are put into the ‘slow class’ with results being on the day of graduation, — they can’t read, can’t write.

Popularly designed RUSSBE reusable lunch and snack bags aide to minimize paper and plastic waste

RUSSBE is proud to launch the

newest in reusable snack and sandwich bags, providing an environmentally friendly alternative to packing snacks and lunches in generic, wasteful paper bags and plastic sacks. Attractively priced at $5.99 for a pack of four (two snack and two sandwich bags), RUSSBE allows people to cut back on paper and plastic waste without breaking the bank.

While disposable storage bags may be easy and convenient, they are extremely harmful to the environment. Hoping to reverse this trend, each RUSSBE sandwich bag has the potential to keep hundreds of disposable bags out of the landfill all while keeping chips, cookies and sandwiches fresh and ready to enjoy.

RUSSBE bags keep food safe all while contributing to the fight against pollution by their ability to be reused time and

time again. According to the EPA, “each child who brings a brown bag lunch to school every day generates about 67 pounds of waste by the end of the school year.” The 3-ply food grade plastic construction, -with reinforced seams and locking seal, not only- keeps food fresh and stops leaks, but make them ideal for- packing school lunches as they endure the chaotic journey from the bus to the lunchroom.

With an easy to identify, stand up bag design, RUSSBE bags come in a variety of designs to fit any personality and style. With the average family spending upwards of a $100 a year on disposable sandwich bags, RUSSBE reusable lunch and snack bags, save consumers both money and guilt. What is more, RUSSBE bags are easy to hand wash with soap and hot water. Hang upside down for a quick dry and it is ready to use again.

RUSSBE bags are available for purchase online at Amazon.com and will be hitting the shelves of major retailers nationwide this September. RUSSBE bags come in packs of four, available in eight different design patterns and two sizes.

Bishop T.D. Jakes to speak at luncheonBishop T.D. Jakes, senior

pastor at The Potter’s House, will serve as keynote speaker at the 4th annual Each Moment Matters Luncheon benefiting the Faith Presbyterian Hospice Caring Fund, Friday, Nov. 1, at the Hilton Anatole Chantilly Ballroom.  November is National Hospice Month. The luncheon is sponsored by Presbyterian Communities and Services, which secures philanthropic support on behalf of Faith Presbyterian Hospice, Grace Presbyterian Village and Presbyterian Village North.

Named “America’s Best Preacher” by Time magazine, Bishop Jakes is an award-winning humanitarian, philanthropist and multidimensional business leader. He has served families and individuals around the globe and will share heartfelt stories of his own end of life experiences – with a message of hope, service and inspiration.

“The Bible tells us that there is a season for everything -- a time to be born and a time to die,” said

Bishop T.D. Jakes. “For those at their appointed time, Faith Presbyterian Hospice’s Caring Fund extends a quality of care for qualified patients not contingent upon the ability to pay, allowing loved ones the grace to depart with honor and dignity.”

“As Dallas’ largest not-for-profit hospice provider and celebrating its 10-year anniversary, Faith Presbyterian Hospice is committed to exceeding standard hospice and palliative care by improving quality of life physically, mentally, spiritually and emotionally,” explained Godwin Dixon, president and CEO of Presbyterian Communities and Services.  “Faith is nationally known for innovative programs that go above and beyond standard hospice care.”

Luncheon chairs Dalene Buhl and Linda Humphries will host

more than 1,000 guests, including area dignitaries.  In 2012, the Harold Simmons Foundation received the second Each Moment Matters Lifetime Achievement Award in recognition of its commitment to making Each Moment Matter for patients and the community-at-large.

In 2010, the first Each Moment Matters award was given to T. Boone Pickens.

Additionally, the luncheon will honor 49 individuals/couples who demonstrate compassion, excellence, integrity, and honor through faithful service that make Each Moment Matter for others, including April Box Chamberlain, Jennifer and Rev. (LAS VEGAS, NV) – The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People held its final National Board of Directors meeting of 2013 this weekend in Las Vegas, Nevada, making a number of significant announcements for the future of the organization.

NAACP President and CEO Benjamin Todd Jealous made his final address to the National Board of Directors, citing the NAACP’s accomplishments in the last five years, and he received a sustained standing ovation from the board, trustees and staff.

NAACP Chairman Roslyn M. Brock announced that National Board Member Lorraine C. Miller was named the Interim President and CEO of the 104-year-old organization while the search to select a new President and CEO begins.

The leadership of the search committee to select a new President and CEO has been named. The Chair of the Committee will be Rev. Theresa Dear of Bartlett, Illinois, and the Vice Chair will be Lamell McMorris of Washington, DC. Dear and McMorris are both members of the NAACP National Board.

A new partnership between the NAACP and TV One has been approved by the Board of Directors, and the television network will carry the 45th NAACP Image Awards for the next five years. The Image Awards will be held February 22, 2014 in the Pasadena Civic Center in Pasadena, California.

The NAACP has been accredited to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), which allows the Association to

attend and conduct advocacy at UNFCCC international meetings.

New national board members were announced: Da’Quan Marcell Love, a senior at Hampton University in Virginia; Joshua S. Turnquest, a sophomore at Syracuse University in New York; and A.M.E. Zion Bishop Dennis V. Proctor, who was elected to fill the unexpired term held by A.M.E. Zion Bishop Roy A. Holmes, who passed away this year. With the passing of Bishop Holmes, Bishop Proctor was assigned to preside over the New York, Western New York, and United Kingdom Episcopal Districts, in addition to Alabama-Florida.

“This is a moment of great change and great opportunity for the NAACP,” stated NAACP Chairman Roslyn M. Brock. “We are excited to work with Lorraine C. Miller during this time of transition. We are confident that

Lorraine will serve the Association with a steady and experienced hand as we continue the search for the next President and CEO.”

“I am honored to have been selected for this venerable role,” stated Miller. “I look forward to continuing the path forged by Chairman Brock and President Jealous in the months ahead. These are important times, and the important work of the NAACP will go on.”

“Lorraine is a natural fit as interim president of the nation’s oldest and largest civil rights organization,” stated NAACP President and CEO Benjamin Todd Jealous. “She comes into this position with two decades of experience working for the U.S. House of Representatives and an even longer career in civil rights advocacy and policy. She will have the honor of leading the dynamic staff of this great organization.”

Lorraine C. Miller named Interim NAACP President and CEO while search for Next President and CEO commences

It doesn’t matter which side you support, the controversy at Grambling State between the football team and the school administration was an embarrassment for all HBCU schools.

It was like watching your dirty laundry (no pun intended) being talked about over and over, while getting trashed all over the country. And there appeared to be no middle ground in the controversy.

You were either for the players taking a historic stance by refusing to play against Jackson State, or on the other side by thinking they went too far to prove a point.

There are some who may subscribe to the Al Davis (the late Oakland Raiders’ owner) theory of ‘it doesn’t matter what is being said about you just as long as you’re being talked about.’

Grambling State was front and center of the entire sports world. As a matter of fact, the controversy even made it to world news programs. It seems, everybody had something to say about “the small, poor black school in rural Louisiana.”

What it did for some was shed the light on the theories of how black folk go about handling their business. It’s no secret, HBCU schools have long been plagued by corrupt financial controversies throughout time. So, this was nothing new. It goes on all the time…far too often.

I grew wearisome and tired of all the talking heads

going on and on about the situation.

I found myself trying to hash out the underlying themes or intent from some who couldn’t tell you the first thing about Grambling State, but nevertheless, still weighed in on the hot topic.

Already embroiled in a

horrendous season (0-8) and a historic losing streak (12 straight and 18 of the last 19), you had to wonder just how much more could this proud program take? This had to be the low point!

Now, comes the latest, Jackson State is suing Grambling State for not showing up to play last week. And the SWAC is going to fine the school $20,000 for

not playing the game. The hits just keep on coming.

All of these things are just a part of the repercussions from the fallout of the boycott.

“It’s a shame that it had

to come to this,’’ said former Grambling State great Everson Walls. “We all suffer from this as Gramblinites. It doesn’t look good. But sometimes you have to do what you have to do to get some answers. You have to go to the extreme.

He continued, “Hopefully some good will

come from this and the program will get back on track and move forward. We have to all pull together and protect the kids. The adults can’t keep acting like kids. It’s our responsibility to take care of them.’’

So, where does Grambling State go from here?

I think you start at the top with the president. Frank G. Pogue must go, along with

athletic director Aaron James, the third AD in the last three years.

It got personal between Pogue and former coach Doug Williams, who was fired after two games this season. As always in a power struggle, ego got in the way, and not the well-being of the program or the kids.

Anytime that happens,

there’s flawed leadership. We don’t have to get into

all of the finger-pointing of who said what, or who did what. That’s what got this situation to this point.

And we don’t need to hear about the ‘woe is me’ excuses that are being offered up by the current

administration of state funds being slashed. That’s happening all over the country.

This got personal between the president and the coach!

Black folk have been dealing with budget cuts since the beginning of time. That’s second nature because we’ve always found a way to survive no matter the circumstance. It’s simply an

excuse to fall back on because of the escalation of this situation.

So, as we continue to move forward, I think this could be a seminal moment in all of college sports. And it could lead to other things coming into play such as pay for play for student-athletes, as well as stipends and many other conditions.

There already is a lawsuit being heard on former players suing the NCAA over their “likeness’’ rights in the EA sports games.

”This (the Grambling State boycott) could be just the tip of the iceberg,’’ said Mike Wilbon of ESPN. “There are so many other things out there that are about to burst this thing wide open as we know it now. I don’t know when it’s going to happen, but a shakeup in how college sports goes about its business is definitely about to take place. And wouldn’t it be ironic that the charge is led by a small black school in Louisiana?

“Heck, you already see (the changes) with all of the conference shakeups going on.

It’s all about the mighty dollar for colleges. Next up on the agenda is how to take care of the one thing that makes all of this work _ the players. ‘’

Things are back to normal (whatever that is) this week for Grambling State. It’s homecoming week, and the Tigers will play host to Texas Southern on Saturday.

With all of the attention from last week’s boycott, one wonders if this week’s game will be an afterthought.

 North Texas Women Crusade

to Get 100,000 Signatures of Women Who

Pledge to Say No to Married Men

… Chanel Price knows all too well the trap of dating married men.

She has chronicled her journey and lessons learned in a new book The Mistress Trap.

Her experience has led her to launch a crusade to bring awareness to a culture of increasing infidelity.

Chanel encourages all women to take the fidelity pledge on her web site and in her book. Anyone can be vulnerable to an affair with a married man.

She is encouraging all single and married women to take the pledge and enter an accountability relationship with a woman that they trust.

She hopes that by bringing the issue to mind before the opportunity for infidelity  presents itself, it will decrease the likelihood that it will happen, thus curtailing a soaring divorce rate.

She is hosting book signings, social media events, attending parties, festival and speaking to groups to garner 100,000 signatures from Texas women who will take the pledge to say no to married men.

“A trap set, whether intentional or unintentional is still a trap,” says Chanel.

In her new 113-page paperback

book, she details her story of dating a married man and offers advice on how to avoid the traps

set for women in these kinds of relationships.

“I pray that through this inside look you can see the grave deception of The Mistress Trap and will make a decision to be the catalyst for change and break this evil cycle once and for all,” she said.

For women who are interested in taking the pledge, they can go to www.themistresstrap.com to find out how.

Anyone interested in Chanel bringing the pledge to their group, church, or event,  can e-mail her at [email protected].

The book, The Mistress Trap, is written in a simple, easy to read style.

It outlines Chanel’s, as well as the stories of other mistresses.  She says her objective is not to glorify sin or to condemn others, but instead to offer both biblical and first hand advice that she hopes will keep women out of the mistress trap.

“This pandemic of bold infidelity is out of control and it has been for a while.  Someone has to take a stand,” she said.

Five individuals were honored at the third annual National Women’s History Museum (NWHM) de Pizan Honors ceremony on October 9 at the Mead Center for American Theater in Washington, DC. The audience was treated to an evening of eloquence capped off by presentations of the Living Legacy Awards to individuals recognized for their exceptional contributions to women’s history. In one of her rare moments in front of a microphone where she was not expected to sing, renowned mezzo-soprano Denyce Graves was eloquent and reverential about why she sings as she accepted the Marian Anderson Living Legacy Award “I sing because it inspires and moves me. I sing because it brings me closer to God,” Graves said as she thanked her husband and daughter and drew a standing ovation as she received the award named for legendary Black singer Marion Anderson.

Tony Award-winning actress Phylicia Rashad was as eloquent as the opera superstar Graves, as she accepted the NWHM’s Lena Horne Living Legacy Award.

“Where the women go, the culture goes,” she said accepting the award named after entertainment industry icon Lena Horne. “We must memorialize the achievements and contributions that women make in society every day. The world will be much different when …women are held in high regard.”

In addition to Graves and Rashad, an award was given to Dr. Etta Pisano, North Carolina radiologist who helped engineer a breakthrough in breast cancer detection. Her award was named after the famous Johns Hopkins cardiologist Dr. Helen Taussig.

Dr. Pisano shared with the audience how, after her mother was taken at the age of 44 by breast cancer, she dedicated herself to helping women detect breast cancer in its early stage.

The other honorees included Interior Secretary Sally Jewell, whose Living Legend award was named for environmentalist Rachel Carson and Ken Burns, Emmy award-winning documentary filmmaker.

“History is empowering,” said NWHM president Joan Bradley Wages. “We need to make sure that these women’s stories are passed down to other women.”

Wages spoke of the NWHM’s ongoing legislative mission to pass a bill in Congress which would allow for an actual museum of women’s history to be built on the National Mall. “We want a museum and we know it will take time… Over 30 countries have a women’s museum and the U.S. needs one.”

With flu season just around the corner, it’s time now to take precautions to keep you and your family healthy this winter. Influenza is a serious disease that can lead to hospitalization and even death. Healthcare officials at Parkland Health & Hospital System want everyone to remember it’s time now to get vaccinated, regardless of which flu strain is circulating. In the United States, the flu season generally starts in October, although it can begin as early as September or as late as February or March. The season generally lasts three to four months once it arrives and the severity depends on the type of virus strains that are circulating during the season. Anyone can get the flu regardless of age. Everyone should get the influenza vaccine if they are older than 6 months of age, ideally by the end of October. This allows them to be protected against influenza for the remaining duration of the flu season. Several flu vaccine types are available in the market. Parkland offers the traditional “trivalent” flu vaccines that protect against two influenza A viruses and an influenza B virus for all adults, and the nasal spray flu vaccine for

children. Individuals at higher risk for complications from influenza include people with asthma, diabetes, heart disease, HIV infection, cancer, history of stroke, pregnant women, adults 65 and older, and children younger than 5, but especially children younger than 2 years old. “It’s extremely important for these individuals to get the flu vaccine because of their risk of developing serious complications,” advised Pranavi Sreeramoju, MD, Chief of Infection Prevention at Parkland. “In addition, every healthcare worker must be vaccinated unless they have a valid exemption per hospital policy.” Dr. Sreeramoju recommends you remember “VIRUS” to help protect you and your family from the flu, especially if you or a loved one has already become infected:

• Vaccine – It is important to get the flu vaccine because you will still receive some protection from the virus regardless of the strain. You cannot get the flu from the flu vaccine.• Isolation – Try to stay away from other family members if

you are infected with the virus, especially those who are most susceptible such as small children and the elderly.• Respiratory hygiene – Use a tissue to cover your cough or sneezes and use good hand hygiene, washing hands frequently. • Use over-the-counter medications to help symptoms, but avoid use of aspirin in children and teenagers.• Stay home if you are sick – staying home if you are ill is the best way to help prevent spreading the virus to your co-workers or friends.

Patients can receive flu vaccinations at any Parkland Community Oriented Primary Care (COPC) health center in the

Dallas County area without an appointment during “Walk-in Wednesdays” held from 8 to 11 a.m. or 1 to 4 p.m. In addition, Parkland’s Vickery Health Center located at 8224 Park Lane, Dallas, 75231 offers flu vaccinations on Wednesday evenings from 6 to 9 p.m. Parkland accepts Medicare, Medicaid, CHIP and most major insurance plans. Parkland will provide financial screening to determine eligibility if you do not have coverage. If it is determined you are not eligible for assistance, the cost for flu vaccination is $20.To find the Parkland COPC health center nearest you, visit http://www.parklandhospital.com/medical_services/centers_locations.html

Political analysts, both mainstream and Black news

media and intellectuals around the country have given their

grade evaluation on President Barack Obama’s first 100

days in office, marked on April 30. Here’s how several

people from the local front graded the new president.

Congresswoman EddieBernice Johnson

Grade:A“I am deeply impressed with the progress that

President Barack Obama has made during the first 100days of his administration. Already we are seeingevidence of the administration’s plan to dig our countryout of recession and develop long-term, sustainable pros-perity. President Obama has made two trips abroad, proving to us and to the world that he intends to

repair our frayed alliances and restore ourinternational leadership.

Finally, the Obama adminis-tration’s code of ethicshas broughtmuch-neededtransparency andaccountability to theWhite House.

President Obamais delivering on thechange that hepromised.”

Senator Kay

Bailey HutchisonGrade: C

“In just 100 days, we’ve seen an alarming accel-

eration of policies that will take America down the

wrong track. The administration has proposed

trillions of dollars in new spending, which will

result in higher taxes on Americans, while sharply

raising our indebtedness to foreign creditors. On the national security front, I am

very concerned aboutthe President’s intention toclose Guantanamo without aworkable plan to relocatedetainees. It is mysincere hope that, movingforward,

theadminis-

tration willadopt the productive,

responsible approach to ournation’s challenges thatAmericansdeserve.”(The office of John Cornyn of

PROPOSITIONS

1 AND 2

Dallas is abuzz at theelection issues beforethem on May 9 whencitizens are asked tovote on the controver-sial ConventionCenter Hotel that isbeing backed byMayor

Leppert. But what doesvoting “no” and voting“yes” mean?It is important to

remember that thepropositions are toamend the Dallas CityCharter which, amongother things, gives thecity the power to acquireproperty for any publicpurpose. The propositionsare worded to prohibit thecity from acting on thesebefore stated powers. Therefore, if a citizen wouldlike the city to maintainthose powers, they are tovote NO and vice versa.

-- The votes are in and eight of the top Historically Black College and University (HBCU) marching bands have been selected to perform at the 12th Annual Honda Battle of the Bands Invitational Showcase. Widely known within the marching band community as "The Honda," the Invitational Showcase is the culmination of the Honda Battle of the Bands, providing a national stage to highlight the distinct showmanship of HBCU marching bands. The Invitational Showcase will take place on January 25, 2014, at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta, where tens of thousands of HBCU marching band fans will converge for one of the nation's most distinguished marching band events. Individual and group tickets are available at http://hondabattleofthebands.com/tickets. The eight bands selected to perform are:

Alabama A&M University, Marching Maroon & White (Southwestern Athletic Conference)

Alabama State University, Mighty Marching Hornets (Southwestern Athletic Conference)

Bethune-Cookman University, Marching Wildcats (Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference)

Morehouse College, Marching Maroon Tigers (Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference)

The eight HBCUs will receive a $20,000 grant from Honda for their music education programs, plus an all-expenses paid trip to Atlanta for the Invitational Showcase. The final eight bands were chosen through a voting process that incorporates feedback from online fan votes, band directors, HBCU school presidents and representatives from American Honda.

"The Honda Battle of the Bands is a celebration of the unique HBCU marching band experience and

culture," said Gina Jorge, head of Multicultural Marketing for American Honda Motor Co., Inc. "The Invitational Showcase is a spectacular display of the results of months of dedication and preparation, and
