The high level of our education system is well-known andFinnish schoolchildren have excelled in PISA surveys for several years.Finland is also one of the safest countries in the world, and the valuesof equality, integrity, and openness are important for us. No wonderthat in 2010 Finland was nominated as the Worlds Best Country by Newsweek magazine.

Finland is unique among the Nordic countries, with its distinctivelanguage and culture. Finnish and Swedish are the of cial languages. According to the EF English Pro ciency Index, Finns are amongthe best non-native English speakers in the world. Finland is on theforefront of technology and still having its roots deep in nature. Consisting of four major elds of study, the ICE offers a multidisciplinary approachto intercultural issues. Study of Religionsincreases understanding of the variousroles religion plays in society, in politicaldebate as well as in peoples everyday lives.Social Psychology examines processes behind the formation of cultural and socialidentity. Other topics of interest include, forexample, the relationships between varioussocial groups, ethnicity, stereotypes, racismand adaptation. Speech Communicationobserves practical interculturalcommunication situations and processes as well as cultural beliefs and values presentand produced in communication. Latin American Studies and other area studies, offered by the Department of WorldCultures, provide students with the regional,

cultural, and socio-political contexts in which intercultural encounters emerge.

    Bayesian Statistics and DecisionAnalysis (EuroBayes)

The Masters Degree Programme in Bayesian Statistics andDecision Analysis (EuroBayes) is a joint effort of six Europeanuniversities. Bayesian statistics is designed to manage all situations where uncertainty is found. Since some degree of uncertainty is present in almost every aspect of life, it may be argued thatBayesian statistics should be appreciated and used by everyone.

The Bayesian paradigm has indeed experienced a spectaculargrowth during the past ten years and it is still nding new areasof fruitful practical application. This development can be largely attributed to the increasing need for sophisticated models todescribe available data, which are typically much too complexfor conventional statistics to process. Another factor in theBayesian achievement is the development of powerful Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) integration techniques. This hascreated an acute demand for graduates who are well trained inBayesian methodology and, as a consequence, generated extremely attractive opportunities for employment.
