The student-led project Interactive Hologram: A True 3D Display, which was featured on local television , was awarded the Paychex Sponsor Award for Innovation and Creativity. The festival also solidified another successful year for the Innovative Freshmen Experience with their exhibit, "X-Ray Vision" With A Multi-camera Array. Employers, especially those unfamiliar with the term “Imaging Science”, often use this information to gauge how well an Imaging Science applicant might fit job requirements, and to determine how much salary to offer. We're confident that with more students and alumni reporting, Imaging Science will stand out even more as a field in demand by employers. This will lead to even more value for your degree! CIS strongly encourages those who have recently graduated and those working on co-op to report your information to RIT's Office of Co-op and Career Services. Having this data available is helpful to fellow students and prospective employers to understand ranges of competitive salaries. Salary data is updated frequently so the statistics are not stale. Full-time salary information is collected automatically from graduates who complete an online form . (Note that you need to login, but salary info is pulled anonymously for the table.) So make sure you also check out ALL CIS NEWS HEADLINES Volume 4 | Issue 3 | Spring/Early Summer 2013 PREVIOUSLY ENJOYED —————————————————————— Boston, MACIS took part in a College of Science event in Boston on Sunday, April 21 at Restaurant dante. Of the nearly 40 attendees, five imaging/photo science alumni joined in, as well as one current student and one prospective (and now committed!) student, who also happens to be a past summer intern. Guests enjoyed hors d’oeurves while overlooking the Charles River. The HuntCIS continued the tradition of the annual Hunt on April 27. An All Stars team consisting of alumni and faculty/ staff (who also happened to be alumni) managed to stave off the stiff competition (who have the benefit of combining forces with Motion Picture Science students) to win first place. This year’s list, as well as the videos from all the participating teams, can be viewed here . Washington, DCCIS held the 7th annual DC alumni reception in Tyson’s Corner on Sunday, June 2. Forty CIS alumni with graduation years spanning over 4 decades came out for the event, which featured a special tribute to Dr. John Schott in recognition of his many years of teaching and his recent induction into the Innovation Hall of Fame. COS Distinguished Alumnus John Roberts (BS Imaging Science ‘70) also joined the party, as did one of this year’s summer interns. Some photos from the event can be viewed here . Dr. Bruce Smith (‘86 BS, ‘89 MS, ‘95 PhD Imaging Science) and Dr. John Schott have been named to the Fourth Class of Inductees into the RIT Innovation Hall of Fame , joining 18 visionaries previously inducted, including Chester Carlson. Their photos and description of their work will be displayed in the Albert J. Simone Center for Student Innovation and Entrepreneurship. Smith and Schott, along with four others, were honored with an induction ceremony with RIT President Bill Destler and Provost Jeremy Haefner on May 3. The following day, the inductees held a panel discussion as part of the Imagine RIT: Innovation and Creativity Festival. Videos were produced to honor each of the inductees and celebrate their impressive bodies of work. CIS proudly congratulates nine BS Imaging Science, twelve MS Imaging Science, two MS Color Science, and nine PhD Imaging Science graduates successfully completing their degrees in 2013. Graduating Imaging Science students Colin Axel (BS) and Siddharth Khullar (PhD) were selected to speak on behalf of College of Science Undergraduates and all Graduate students, respectively at the RIT-wide Academic Convocation. As delegates, both also addressed the COS at its Commencement Ceremony, as did COS distinguished alumnus John Roberts (BS Imaging Science ‘70). Photo by Yasmeena Azer CIS Achievements and Recognitions Imaging Science graduate student Phil Salvaggio (BS Imaging Science and Computer Science ‘12) has been awarded a Graduate Research Fellowship from the National Science Foundation for his research in computer modeling of complex and novel optical systems, such as sparse optical systems. This comes only one year after Imaging Science PhD students David Kelbe and Alexandra Artusio-Glimpse were also awarded NSF fellowships . “Earning Graduate Research Fellowships from the National Science Foundation two years in a row is a significant accomplishment,” says RIT graduate dean Hector Flores. “The national average for institutions being awarded these honors consecutively is about 15 percent. RIT’s rate of success is 40 percent, which is a testament to the excellence of our doctoral researchers-in-training.” Read More Second-year Imaging Science undergraduate students Rose Rustowicz and Malachi Schultz recently traveled to Hawaii to speak at two conferences. The conferences were the Hawaii University International Conference on Education and Technology and the 26th International Conference on the First Year Experience. Rustowicz and Schultz gave talks centering on the Innovative Freshman Experience course. Four additional CIS students will give presentations about the program at the 2013 STEMtech Conference in Atlanta in October. Get Involved: Alumni Admissions Many alumni have asked: How can I help my alma mater and increase the enrollment in Imaging Science? One way is to volunteer as an Alumni Admissions Officer! You can assist our efforts with the Office of Admissions to recruit qualified students to study Imaging Science at RIT. By representing CIS/ RIT at area college fairs or participating in Admissions receptions in your area, you can play an important role in helping prospective students learn more about CIS and RIT. Even better, when you represent CIS at such events, you qualify for rewards via the CIS Ambassador Program . Becoming an Alumni Admissions Officer is easysimply contact CIS Outreach Specialist Bethany Choate , and she will both connect you with the Admissions Office and arrange to send you CIS informational materials along with your very own CIS Polo Shirt to wear to the event. Starting with this newsletter and continuing in each issue, upcoming Alumni Admissions Officer events in our top 5 most CIS-alumni populated metro areas (Rochester, DC, San Fran, Philly, Boston) will be posted, so you’ll know when one is coming up in your neck of the woods. By sharing your experiences as an imaging/color/photo science student and professional, you can help introduce prospective students to the unique opportunities available only through CIS at RIT! We hope you’ll join our efforts. Science and technology are constantly evolving, and throughout the years our Imaging Science degree programs have updated their curricula to keep up with the vigorous pace. Now, we have started to consider whether the academic field name we use, "Imaging Science", properly reflects what our faculty/ students/alumni learn and do, the careers they pursue, and the position titles they hold. We also find that prospective students have difficulty finding us, given confusion with other degree programs on RIT's campus, and the naming of radiology and related medical imaging units as "imaging science" in hospitals nationwide further muddies the waters. And then there is the problem that, as a highly interdisciplinary program, we are halfway between science and engineering! So we are investigating whether there is a better alternative name for the Imaging Science degree programs. PLEASE NOTE: The Chester F. Carlson Center for Imaging Science will remain named as such. We are only investigating name changes for the academic programs and degrees. We would like to know your take: Based on your experience and knowledge of the industry, what name would best represent "Imaging Science"? Use this submission form to anonymously submit your thoughts and suggestions! Deadline for responses is August 30. Boston, MA— CIS took part in a College of Science event in

Boston on Sunday, April 21 at Restaurant dante. Of the nearly

40 attendees, five imaging/photo science alumni joined in, as
