Gossling‘Harvest of Gold’Many will recognise Gossling – a.k.a Helen Croome’s distinct voice, her catchy chorus the standout feature on 2011’s summer anthem Boys Like You by 360. This summer, the Melbourne singer/songwriter is back with her debut-album, Harvest of Gold – a quietly confi dent jewel of an album that’s a likely backdrop to many balmy evenings.

The title track is a gorgeous mash of electronica and percussion with hauntingly vulnerable vocals but with a glorious, soulful quality that

– when paired with catchy lyrics – give it a delicious pop-edge that will see it reach high commercial rotation.

– an ode to heartbreak and lost love, to Challenge, a faster-paced number with a touch of disco beats, this album possesses all the heart-aching chapters of love and loss, highs and lows.

And while soulful sweet lyrics and saccharin vocals might not be everyone’s cup of tea, it’s the perfect brew for road-trips and summer nights with your trusty gal pals.

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire We weren’t alone in falling for feisty heroine, Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence), in the fi rst instalment of the popular adaption of the literary trilogy by Suzanne Collins, but we weren’t sure if the sequel would end our love aff air, as they often have a habit of doing. It hasn’t.

There is much to love about the follow-up to Hunger Games – in fact, the groundwork done by the initial slick-action blockbuster in setting up the thriller now gives Catching Fire the room to expand the storyline and build the characters. The momentum and intensity is still relentless, but the jerky camera movements are less severe. Perhaps we’re de-sensitised to it now – expectations set by the fi rst one – but it’s less shocking and confronting, even if it’s still violent and cruel. What’s more apparent is your emotional investment in rooting for Katniss as she fi nds herself with a seemingly insurmountable fi ght on her hands having unwittingly inspired a revolution in the Districts. President Snow (Donald Sutherland) is keen to eliminate her and quell any uprising. Basically – he’s onto her, and is not a happy camper and devises an amped up version of the 75th Hunger Games – it’s like an All Stars, all-ages version. Alliances between tributes are all the more important, and the love triangle continues – the whole saga ending on another cliff hanger, setting things up nicely for the next one. And we can’t wait.
