Recognizing Digressions and AsidesSometimes lecturers go off their main points (digression) or

tell stories that are related to the point but not an important part of it (asides).

Digressions and asides often sound like small stories rather than statements of fact.

Distinguishing Major from Minor PointsIt is important to notice difference between major and

minor ideas when listening to a lecture. Summaries contain only the major points and to find

major points, ask:Is the idea the speaker’s main point? Is the idea a reason or an explanation of the main point? Is the idea signaled with expressions such as Most

importantly or First of all? If you can not answer yes to any of these questions, the

point is probably minor.Examples, digressions, and asided are often minor points,

so they are not useful in summaries.

Page 34: IMAGINATION CANKAYA UNIVERSITY - OFFICE OF BASIC AND ELECTIVE COURSES- ENGLISH UNIT.

The first idea is a minor point. It is not the main point because it does not help you understand the main point. It does not add useful information to the main pointit is not signaled as being important or as one of the main points of the talk.

Global Reading

Recognizing Summary Statements and Conclusions Many texts summarize their main ideas in the introduction

and this is called as scope

They may also have a summary at the end in the conclusion

When skimming, noticing the summary statements in the introduction and conclusion can help you find the main ideas quickly.

CANKAYA UNIVERSITY - OFFICE OF BASIC AND ELECTIVE COURSES- ENGLISH UNIT

Page 52: IMAGINATION CANKAYA UNIVERSITY - OFFICE OF BASIC AND ELECTIVE COURSES- ENGLISH UNIT.

1. Read the first and last paragraphs of the text on pages 62&63. Underline the statements that summarizes the main ideas of the text.

Paragraph 1: In this section, we will see where imagination came from

and, most importantly, we will look at how and why we can use imagination to help our acting.

We will see that effective use of imagination will help us keep the attention of the audience and make our performances authentic and believable.

Paragraph 9: So, now we can see where imagination comes from, how it

helps our acting and why we have to work hard to let it work well.

CANKAYA UNIVERSITY - OFFICE OF BASIC AND ELECTIVE COURSES- ENGLISH UNIT

Page 53: IMAGINATION CANKAYA UNIVERSITY - OFFICE OF BASIC AND ELECTIVE COURSES- ENGLISH UNIT.

2. Read the whole text quickly. Then summarize the important points in the text completing the statements with words from the box. (Page 64)1. survive2. similar; early humans3. audience4. preparation5. Imagination6. Imagining

3. Are there any main ideas that were not covered by the summary statements you underlined in Exercise 1? The summary includes all the details

CANKAYA UNIVERSITY - OFFICE OF BASIC AND ELECTIVE COURSES- ENGLISH UNIT

Page 54: IMAGINATION CANKAYA UNIVERSITY - OFFICE OF BASIC AND ELECTIVE COURSES- ENGLISH UNIT.

Focused Reading1. Review the ideas in Before You Read (Page 61). Then scan the

text on pages 62&63 and decide which of the ideas are stated in the text. If an idea is stated, write the paragraph number on the line.

1. Paragraph 52. Paragraph 23. Not stated. Although the first paragraph says that imagination is

“at the center of creativity” and “the most powerful of the actor’s tools,” it does not state that an actor has to use creativity.

4. Not stated. The first paragraph may suggest this, but it is not stated.

CANKAYA UNIVERSITY - OFFICE OF BASIC AND ELECTIVE COURSES- ENGLISH UNIT

Page 55: IMAGINATION CANKAYA UNIVERSITY - OFFICE OF BASIC AND ELECTIVE COURSES- ENGLISH UNIT.

2. Read the text and take notes in the outline on supporting details.

Supporting Details for Main Idea 1:• Humans could experience things not related to present• Helped humans be careful about dark caves, because

there might be bears in themSupporting Details for Main Idea 2:• Each play is like a dark cave; actors need to consider

possibilities about how their character may behave. This makes their performance more realistic.

Supporting Details for Main Idea 3:• Truthful / authentic performance is more believable

CANKAYA UNIVERSITY - OFFICE OF BASIC AND ELECTIVE COURSES- ENGLISH UNIT

Page 56: IMAGINATION CANKAYA UNIVERSITY - OFFICE OF BASIC AND ELECTIVE COURSES- ENGLISH UNIT.

Supporting Details for Main Idea 4:• Thinking through the character’s life experiences helps make an

authentic performance.Supporting Details for Main Idea 5:• “Magic if”: ask ourselves “what if” about every aspect of the

character’s situation / explore different possibilities work out what is authentic

• E.g. role = knife murderer. Why would someone be a killer? By imagining various scenarios, we can understand the character better.

Supporting Details for Main Idea 6:• Script only covers a couple of hours of performance: not enough

to tell us much about the character. • We have to use imagination to cover the difference between this

and the lifetime of experiences that would shape a real character.

Page 57: IMAGINATION CANKAYA UNIVERSITY - OFFICE OF BASIC AND ELECTIVE COURSES- ENGLISH UNIT.

3. Look at the chart. It gives information in two topics from the reading. Listen to the lecture again and complete the chart with details you hear.
