Imaginary City

The city and the architecture are susceptible to constant changes with time, in a state without a final, locked form – dynamic systems with ups and downs. Time and again, as a result of the changes, whether they be societal, political, cultural, or economic, objects and their function become obsolete, old-fashioned, uneconomical. Then, they are either replaced by new ones, an occurrence which may occupy a bigger portion of the urban quarter which is transformed in form, structure and function, or the building keeps the old form by embracing a new function. The city is in a constant state of recycling, reshaping, redefining. Our memories of the city are fragments, spatial and temporal excerpts, inserts.

Imaginary City is a series of generated urban scenes and details created by editing of frames taken in multiple cities. The photographic image created by taking photographs at different locations serves as a tool in the creation of new architectural / graphic solutions. The process in its turn represents designing through photography.

Imaginary City offers a visual experience made up of scenes and fragments which we meet every day, we see, we (do not) notice, we walk past them, and is a challenge for the spectators to identify and discern the original motifs.

Imaginary City focuses on the aspects of dynamics as opposed to statics of the city as well. In several series, which are part of the project, the themes changes, development, densification, growth, multiplication and repetition are treated.

about the author: Aleksandar Naumcheski – architect, photographer

Born in Skopje in 1975. He graduated from the Faculty of Architecture in Skopje. Architecture is his professional field of work. He is a founder-partner at Radius Architects. His second passion is photography, in which architecture is his principal theme. The composition, space and light are the connecting threads which he finds between architecture and photography. The simplicity of the composition, the pure geometric articulation, and the graphic expression are the concepts he practises in both areas of his work.
