Dear Friends, This vintage is off to a wet start with storm after storm moving through Sonoma County. The last three years have been officially classified as drought years, so all the rain has been a blessing. Around the winery we’re busy bottling a few of the 2008 reds and just finished bottling our 2009 Wow Oui in late February. Over Valentine’s Weekend we introduced a new Rosé made from a red grape called Aleatico. It’s dry with some spice in the finish and has been a huge hit. We also just released the newest vintages of Interlude (port infused with coco beans) and Coco Blu (port with blueberries). These fun wines aren’t scheduled to be a part of future club shipments, so if you’d like to try them, please give us a call. For this very first 2010 installment of your Imagery Wine Club, I selected our 2006 Lagrein and the new 2007 Sangiovese. The Lagrein is deep, brooding and layered; a wine you can get lost in. The Sangiovese is its usual friendly self; approachable, versatile and great with food. Speaking of food, we’ve posted your monthly recipe pairing online, so checkout www.imagerywinery.com. This move is one step closer to hosting all your Wine Club content digitally. In fact, we plan to do the environmentally sound thing and go paperless as early as this September. We’ll keep you posted. Cheers, Joe Benziger, Winemaker march 2010 wine club newsletter mark your calendars for the 1st Wednesday of the month - imagery after hours starts back up May 12th!

Dear Friends,

This vintage is off to a wet start with

storm after storm moving through Sonoma

County. The last three years have been

officially classified as drought years, so all the

rain has been a blessing. Around the winery

we’re busy bottling a few of the 2008 reds

and just finished bottling our 2009 Wow Oui

in late February.

Over Valentine’s Weekend we introduced

a new Rosé made from a red grape called

Aleatico. It’s dry with some spice in the finish

and has been a huge hit. We also just released

the newest vintages of Interlude (port infused

with coco beans) and Coco Blu (port with

blueberries). These fun wines aren’t scheduled

to be a part of future club shipments, so if

you’d like to try them, please give us a call.

For this very first 2010 installment of

your Imagery Wine Club, I selected our 2006

Lagrein and the new 2007 Sangiovese. The

Lagrein is deep, brooding and layered; a wine

you can get lost in. The Sangiovese is its usual

friendly self; approachable, versatile and great

with food.

Speaking of food, we’ve posted your

monthly recipe pairing online, so checkout

www.imagerywinery.com. This move is one

step closer to hosting all your Wine Club

content digitally. In fact, we plan to do the

environmentally sound thing and go paperless

as early as this September. We’ll keep

you posted.

varietal: Lagrein is a little known red wine

varietal native to Italy’s Trentino - Alto Adige

region. Relatively rare, even in Italy, in

California it is almost non-existent: fewer

than 200 producing acres are currently planted.

vintage: The 2006 vintage was truly a year

won in the vineyard. A record 10 day heat spike

in July had growers nervous about sunburn on

the ripening grapes. Then came the rains, which

sent us rushing to leaf the vines, allowing

sunshine and air to reach the clusters. But late

October saw a change in the weather and a

change in our expectations for the vintage.

Overall, it was a late harvest of excellent

quality fruit.

vinifi cation: The grapes were cold soaked

and then fermented on the skins. After

pressing, the wine was racked to a combination

of American and French oak and aged for

16 months before bottling.

tasting notes: Lagrein produces dark,

almost inky colored wines, with moderate

tannins. Our 2006 has layered jammy flavors

of dark plum, blueberry and black cherry.

Barrel aging ads a light touch of smokey oak

in the finish. Wonderful on its own or with

a meal, we suggest pairing our Lagrein with

grilled meat or roasted eggplant. Drink now

or cellar for the next 3-5 years.

varietal: The Sangiovese grape is an ancient

varietal indigenous to the Tuscany region of

Italy. It is Italy’s most planted grape variety

and the base for Chianti, Vino Nobile di

Montepulciano and most of the Super Tuscans.

vintage: A dry winter led to a fairly early

bud break in 2007. Overall the growing season

was evenly paced with a just a few heat spikes in

the early summer. Warm August weather started

harvest early, but then a cool September slowed

things quite a bit and grapes hung on the vines

another few weeks. This cool period helped to

develop complexity in flavors while keeping

sugars under control. 2007 was one of the

longest harvests Sonoma County has seen in

recent years, spanning almost three months

from start to finish. This vintage was certainly

smaller in quantity than 2006, but in

many cases the lower yields meant more

concentrated flavors.

vinifi cation: The wine was fermented in

small stainless steel tanks for a week and a

half. The high skin to juice ratio translated in

complex flavors, while allowing us to manage

good tannin levels. The wine was aged for 18

months in new and older French oak barrels

and bottled on March 16, 2009.

tasting notes: Sangiovese is known for its

medium body and fit tannins and our 2007 is

no exception. In the glass there are flavors of

cocoa, strawberry, tea, bright cherry and just a

little pepper. The lean, acidic backbone gives

our Sangiovese structure and is part of what

makes it such an excellent food wine. Enjoy

now or cellar for the next 2-4 years.
