Small Grant Scheme Aim) an% Scope

The purpose of the IMA Small Grant Scheme is to facilitate research activity in all areas of applicable mathematics. It is designed to be flexible, to have a simple application procedure, and to offer a rapid response to applications. TheScheme is open to all members of the wider mathematics community.

The Small Grant Scheme is competitive, and awards will be made only if they can be expected to have a significantimpact on, or contribute towards, the specified research activity. Grants are unliely to be made to support activitiesfor which substantial alternative funding sources currently exist.

The awards can be used to support all forms of research activity within the remit of the IMA, but the Instituteparticularly welcomes applications that are used to!i" provide partial support for worshops and small conferences and symposia#!ii" assist with travel costs for overseas visitors#!iii" facilitate the advancement and promotion of collaborative research programmes#!iv" promote the education and training of students and young mathematicians and scientists#!v" initiate or aid $oint research programmes between mathematicians and industry#!vi" enable an activity that is not open to funding from other sources

    Con*erence) Atten%ance

Applicants who re%uest funding to attend a conference should provide a rough budget and indicate other sources offunding being sought or received. In particular, they should state why the costs cannot be met from theiruniversity&employer or other source of funding, such as their 'epartmental travel budget or !in the case of an()S*+sponsored )h' student" the portion of the 'TG grant that is intended for use for the incidental costsincurred in the training of doctoral students.

    Proce%#re

-. Grants will be made up to a value of /00, although larger awards may exceptionally be granted.

    1. An initial budget of / has been earmared for this scheme, which will be reviewed regularly in the light ofdemand.

    2. Applications may be made at any time.

    4. Applications must be made on the Small Grants Scheme application form, which can be found atwww.ima.org.u&about3us&support3and3grants&small3grant3scheme.cfm

    4. If the applicant is not a member of the Institute, the name of a coapplicant who is a member must be given./. A decision on the award of a grant will be usually given within two months of submission of an application.5. A brief report on the outcomes of the research pro$ect, and how the money was used, must be lodged within two

months of completion of the activity. The final report form can be found on the same web page.
