II. STARTECH.COM – BUSINESS ANALYST: JOB DESCRIPTION

Job Description

I am currently responsible for helping scope, define, test and implement new technologies, reports, and/or processes used by the Marketing, Web and UX teams here at StarTech.com.

With the expectation that "by 2017 - CMOs will spend more on IT than CIOs" (Gartner, 2013) understanding how current and future marketing technologies is important as High-Tech Marketing teams are anticipated to be the central engine of growth for many companies.

As the Business Analyst for Marketing, I scope out the needs of the Marketing team, identify which tools/technologies best-fit the company's goals, map out possible solutions, establish which business systems and cross-functional stakeholders would be affected, and then validate, test, and implement the new technology, report, or process. My role is very cross-functional, as various departments within StarTech.com, and the business’ customers, interact/use the technologies, reports, or processes that I help implement every day.

I really enjoy the work that I do, and love being a part of the revolutionary worlds of Marketing and Information Technology (IT).

Key Responsibilities:

• Work in an Agile project team alongside the Project Manager, Corporate Communications Manager (Product Manager), IT Supervisor (Scrum Master), and Agile Team Members (developers & programmers).

• Actively participate in sprint planning, backlog grooming, daily scrum meetings, sprint review meetings and retrospectives.

• Use project management software like Atlassian JIRA/Confluence, Asana and Microsoft Project.

• Provide day-to-day tactical objectives, and answer any questions/clarify details on user stories.

• Remove any project barriers for the project team to ensure maximum productivity/velocity and confirm that the project is delivered in a timely-manner.

• Identify the down-stream effects of proposed project initiatives.

• Map existing business processes to define current business activities for the development of procedures and models. (AS-IS)

• Prototype new procedures for the purpose of enhancing Marketing and Website processes, operations, and the UX process flow. (TO-BE)

• Scope, create mock-ups, prototypes, and write requirements documentation for projects.

• Conduct user acceptance testing and business acceptance testing scenarios.

II. B) BUSINESS ANALYST ROLE EXPLAINED – COLLABORATION DIAGRAM (LESS CHOREOGRAPHY)

As a Business Analyst at StarTech.com, I and the other Business Analysts work with the Business (Key User) to help them focus on their Goals and Needs so that they understand and are open to the Solutions designed by our Developers.

We also work with our Developers to explain to them the Goals and Needs of the Business (Key User) and help align Solutions designed by the Developers with these Goals and Needs, removing ambiguity during the lifecycle of the project.

The following is a Collaboration Diagram that outlines how Business Analysts collaborate with the Business (Key Users) and Developers at StarTech.com.

II. C) BUSINESS ANALYST – PROCESS MODELLING EXAMPLES

In order to optimize and standardize business processes it is necessary to first define processes.

Processes are defined by interviewing and shadowing individual stakeholders, documenting shell processes, validating and updating existing processes based on observation and then validating with stakeholders.

The following are examples of Process Modelling that I have completed for an App that I helped create that allowed End Users (the Business) to create Soft Category pages on their own, and publish them dynamically on the StarTech.com website.

The following two process models are documented at different levels (First at a Level 2 and the second a Level 3). They involve different groups of stakeholders for the respective level being documented.

Example I:

Level 2 – Product Soft Category

(Business Oriented Process Model)

Example II:

Level 3 – Product Soft Category - Activity: Add Web Data and Publish

(Business/ System Oriented Process Model)*

*Note: System Process is noted with an (S) and Manual Process is noted with an (M)

III. A) CRM DATABASE ADMINISTRATOR – RACI MATRIX

As the CRM Database Administrator I was responsible for managing the company’s Customer Data, as well as a team that helped complete certain tasks within the CRM database on a daily basis.

To help outline and illustrate “who” was responsible and accountable for “what”, as well as “who” was to be consultedand informed of any changes to the CRM database, I created this RACI Matrix to outline the day-to-day activities that I oversaw.

As I have now moved on from this role – this RACI Matrix still holds tremendous value to the CRM Team, and onboarding/ educating new team members and fellow Business Analysts about CRM tasks. Link to CRM TASKS – RACI MATRIX document.
