Arjun had three wheels one headlight and a coat ofgreen and yellow He belonged to the largest family inthe whole of Delhi Everywhere Arjun went there werebrothers sisters aunties uncles and cousinslsquoGo carefullyrsquo they beeped lsquoSurersquo he would beep in reply

2

Arjun worked hard day and night Pht-pht-tuka-tuka-tuk he went Pht-pht-tuka-tuka-tuk He never complained because Autowallah Sirish workedhard too Sirishji had old bones that caused him pain Hedecorated Arjunrsquos dashboard with plastic flowers andpictures of movie stars He quenched Arjunrsquos thirst forclean gas even when the queues were long Andwhenever Arjunrsquos canopy was torn he wasted no timetaking it to be patched

3

Arjun liked taking whole families to Lajpat Nagar MarketHis heart sang when tourists chose three wheels overfour He loved to rest with Sirishji in the shade of a treeoutside Qutub Minar

4

Arjun never tired of the glamour of Connaught Place atnight He was thrilled by the bustle outside the railwaystation and by the crowds that spewed from Feroz ShahKotla after a cricket matchLife was good and Arjun knew he should never wish formore

5

But secretly Arjun did wish for more Secretly hewanted to fly Oh to have helicopter blades Arjunthought They would chop the air above his canopySirishji would wrap his head in a scarf and the ends of itwould flap gaily in the breeze Off they would go pht-pht-tuka-tuka-tuk in the sky

6

But Arjun knew this was only a dream An auto havinghelicopter blades would be like an elephant havingwings or a train that could zoom off into space like arocket with its carriages trailing behind

7

One hot day Arjun was waiting in a hotch-potch oftraffic at a busy intersection Behind Sirishji sat a grey-haired woman in a dull well-worn sareePht-pht-pht-pht

8

A grubby boy came squeezing between cars and autosselling water His eyes sparkled like polished stones ashe held out one frosted bottle

ldquoMarsquoam Very cold very good magicrdquoThe woman laughed ldquoMagicrdquo The boy wobbled his head with such gusto that Arjunthought it might fall off

9

We all need a little magic the woman said Sheproduced some rupees and took two bottles from theboy Immediately she handed one to Sirishji

10

Sirishji smiled broadly showing the woman his paan-stained teeth He drank quickly and the traffic budged

ldquoAlready the magic is workingrdquo Sirishji joked Thewoman drank too spilling a little on Arjun as he startedforward Pht-pht-tuka-tuka-tuk went Arjun beeping a cheeryhello to one of his brothers

11

No sooner were they moving than Arjun began to feellight on his wheels The traffic parted before him and hesailed through

12

Astonished by the open road Sirishji caught thewomanrsquos eye in his rear-view mirrorldquoYes very magical marsquoamrdquoNow the womanrsquos saree carried a brilliant sheen andwas embroidered with fine gold thread ldquoMagicrdquo shechuckled

13

Arjunrsquos wheels lifted off the road Up up he wentPht-pht-tuka-tuka-tuk up up up There were nohelicopter blades to help him Magic Arjun thought Itrsquosauto magic

14

A flock of birds scattered Arjuns headlight was lit withjoy

15

Arjun flew high above Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium andIndia Gate He looked upon Humayuns Tomb theYamuna River and the gracious temple of AkshardhamHe saw a giant web of roads like the work of a crazyspider

Wide-eyed Sirishji began shrieking with the fun of it allHe no longer gripped the handlebar no longer dodgedcars

16

The woman fingered her beautiful saree ldquoSirrdquo shecalled looking at the rear-view mirror ldquoYour facerdquo When Sirishji looked at himself he saw a face like that ofa Bollywood hero His teeth shone white and his skinwas radiant ldquoWe must drink more waterrdquo he roared

17

But what are we doing Arjun wondered Where can wego What am I if I am no longer driven Never hadArjun been so free Yet never had he felt so lost In the world he had known every journey had purposeeach destination was temporary

18

In boundless quiet above all the honking cars Arjunmissed the roads of his life jammed with carsmotorcycles and buses Below he saw his family at workdots of yellow canopy glowing bright like beacons

Arjun even missed the rush and bustle of people all soeager to arrive somewhere else Places to go places togopht-pht-tuka-tuka-tuk

19

The woman looked down and thought of the joys belowIt was easy now to forget the shimmer of her sareeI was going to visit my daughter and grandchildren shethought They will be waiting They are the real magic inmy life

20

Already Sirishji was tired of his Bollywood face Whatuse is it he wondered Once he had wished only for thisNow Sirishji wanted only the comfort of his own skin

21

Arjunrsquos headlight had grown dull He felt aimless Hecould read Sirishjirsquos thoughts He could sense thewomanrsquos moodLower and lower he flew The city radiated warmth Thenearer Arjun got the more energy it gave him

22

Sirishji became busy again drinking in the familiarmagic of the city Every sign and every turning spoke tohim Very soon he could recognise himself again Heknew where he was going He was already there Thewomanrsquos saree became dull but her face was brightDown to earth they came Arjunrsquos wheels touched warm asphalt and his enginesighed with reliefPht-pht-tuka-tuka-tuk ldquoGocarefullyrdquo beeped a brother from the street corner

23

The womanrsquos grandchildren waved from a windowabove She stepped down and handed Sirishji her fareldquoAuto Auto Autordquo Arjun heard the wonderful cry of astranger

Every ride would be new part of his endless journey fullof surprises
