IEMA – Springfield.
Our ongoing cooperation with the Illinois Emergency Services Management Association (IESMA) Emergency Management Assistance Team (EMAT) continued on September 2, 2014 in Lincoln. Bob Elliott attended a training session conducted for their team. The exchange of information and best practices provides for an expanded response capability to affected communities in their time of need. Several team members attended the annual IEMA Conference in Springfield. Our team joined members of the Illinois Medical Emergency Response Team [IMERT] staffing an information booth in the vendor area. During a General Session, Mr. Tim Gleason, Administrator for the City of Washington presented on the Washington, Illinois Tornado Response and Recovery. He specifically commented on the value of our Incident Management Team in response efforts. A couple weeks later, Mr. Gleason provided the presentation “Tornado Lessons Learned for Municipal Leaders” at the Illinois Municipal League 2014 Annual Conference. He addressed the value of the IMT in his slide:
Incident Management Team o Volunteer responders throughout the State. o Excellent Resource!
In September we had another successful team meeting in Urbana. Five new team members were able to attend and we accomplished a number of goals as well as had some good training on Starcom use and our Mobile Network Kit. Another recent accomplishment is the team’s incorporation as a state non-profit organization. This will provide team opportunities in the future. As November approaches, keep in mind the tornados we responded to last year and Hurricane Sandy the end of October two years ago. Natural disasters do not always occur “in season”. We must also remain aware of the increased risks posed by terrorism threats to our nation. Being prepared for a rapid deployment will enhance the overall response efforts for any affected community.
