Attend a Cattlemen’s Boot Camp in Washington this AprilRegister by March 1 to secure a place at the educational event.

Cattle producers are invited to gather for a Cattlemen’s Boot Camp April 15-16, 2016, at the Benton County Fairgrounds in Kennewick, Wash. The event is hosted by the American Angus Association in partnership with Washington State University (WSU), and provides purebred and commercial producers timely information presented by academic and industry professionals. Registration is now available online and open until March 1, 2016.

“Cattlemen’s Boot Camp events are engaging educational opportunities for both seedstock and commercial producers alike,” says Jaclyn Clark, Association director of events and education. “The day-and-a-half event is packed with industry speakers and reports on research with significant impacts on the beef business.”

Open to all cattle producers, the event is funded by the Angus Foundation and features a day and a half of educational speakers and hands-on activities to help improve their herd operations. The workshop is packed with pertinent infor-mation including bull selection, reproductive technologies, genetic markets, forage management and much more.

Registration is $75 per person, and includes meals and edu-cational materials. Registration forms are due March 1, 2016, and can be submitted electronically or mailed to Jaclyn Clark

at the American Angus Association, 3201 Frederick Ave., Saint Joseph, MO 64506. Late and walk-in registrations are not accepted.

Hotel rooms are available at the Hampton Inn located at 3715 Plaza Way in Kennewick, Wash., for $119 plus tax until March 15, 2016. Use code “ANG” to receive the group rate.

Apply for the 2016 Beef Leaders InstituteSubmit applications by March 1 to be considered for the program.

The Beef Leaders Institute (BLI) is a premier leadership experience for American Angus Association® members that provides a look into the entire beef supply chain, while enhancing participant knowledge of the Association and strengthening their leadership skills. Angus producers between 25-45 years old are encouraged to apply for the ninth annual BLI scheduled for June 20-24, 2016. Applications are due back to the Association by March 1.

During the event, BLI participants are able to tour a beef harvesting and packing facility, retailer, fabricator, feedlots and other industry segments, including the American Angus Association. Those selected will also learn about the ultimate end product — the Certified Angus Beef® brand — and how the branded beef program drives demand for quality Angus genetics.

NJAA Members, Upcoming EventsAngus youth are encouraged to reference their “green book” for upcoming event details.

National Junior Angus Association (NJAA) members can look forward to a number of activities and events in the upcoming New Year, and there’s no better time to start making plans for 2016. That’s according to American Angus Association Director of Events and Education Jaclyn Clark, who is encouraging NJAA members to reference their “green books,” which were recently distributed through the mail, to submit event registration in a timely manner.

“We’re looking forward to hosting Angus juniors for two Raising the Bar conferences in March and April, as well as during annual events such as the National Junior Angus Show and Leaders Engaged in Angus Development conference,” Clark says.

Made possible through donations to the Angus Foundation, the NJAA’s Raising the Bar conferences are an opportunity for junior members to experience college campuses across the country, learn about careers in agriculture and connect with other cattle enthusiasts.

The University of Arkansas will host a Raising the Bar conference March 3-6, 2016, in Fayetteville, Ark.; and South Dakota State University will be the host April 7-10, 2016, in Brookings, S.D. The tentative schedule for both conferences includes a campus tour, educational workshops, farm and ranch tours, as well as social activities and games.

“The National Junior Angus Board has been planning some fantastic events at the University of Arkansas and South Dakota State University,” Clark says. “We encourage all of our junior members to consider attending one of the conferences.”

Registration for the Arkansas event is due by Feb. 1, 2016, and to attend Raising the Bar in South Dakota, you must be signed up by March 1, 2016. To participate, visit the NJAA website to download registration forms. The $100 registration fee covers lodging, conference meals and materials.

“NJAA members can also find these and other deadlines listed in their green books, which should arrive in the mail by the first of the year,” Clark says. “You can also request a copy by calling the Association office.”

Board of Directors Meeting MinutesIllinois Angus Association - 9/8/15

Submitted by Illinois Angus Association Secretary Aaron Schafer

The meeting was called to order by President Richard Hurst at 7:57 p.m. The Roll Call was held. Members present were Annie Chaffin, Alan Miller, Brett Parr, Doug Turner, Jerry Cassady, Kevin Rose, Lee Stremsterfer, Richard Hurst, Scott Anderson, Trever Kuipers, Carla Jurgenson, Greg McClure, Shelia Grobosky, Sherry Adcock, Garrett Lampe, Tyler Schleich, Keith Kramer, Casey Jentz, and David Jenkins. Members absent were John DeRycke, John Kirchner, Ryan Schlipf, Tyler Rhode, Gary Simpson, & Jim Marsh.

The minutes of the March 2015 meeting were presented. A motion to approve the minutes was made by Jerry Cassady and seconded Alan Miller. The motion passed. Doug Turner gave the business manager’s report. Doug informed the board that we are slightly down in membership this year at around 450 members. Our directory advertisement sales were very good. A motion to approve the report was made by Scott Anderson and seconded by Brett Parr. The motion carried. The Finance Committee report was given by Carla Jurgenson. Her committee found that the finances were in good order. Lee Stremsterfer gave the Sale Committee report. He told the board that the futurity tour would take place in early December. The Show Committee report was given by Greg McClure. Greg brought a motion to the board from the committee. The motion is to allow $1,200 for the junior awards at the Illinois State Fair and $500 for the awards at the Illinois Beef Expo. Trevor Kuipers seconded the motion and the motion carried. There was also discussion about contacting the Illinois State Fair manager about possibly changing the dates of the Illinois State Fair Open Angus Show. The committee also had the nomination list for judges for the Illinois Angus Futurity are Amie Sterzbach, Dale Grubbs, Dean Jensen, Blake Bloomberg, and Tom Hawk. The Illinois State Fair judge nominees are Scott Bush, Tyler Winegardner, Shane Lindsey, Chris Styles, and Scott Shaacke. Sherry Adcock gave the report from the Illinois Junior Angus Association. The juniors requested the support of the IAA to cohost the National Junior Angus Show to be held in Madison, Wis., in the summer of 2018. The motion was made by Scott Anderson and seconded by Garrett Lampe. The motion passed. The American Angus Association (AAA) report was given by Casey Jentz. Casey encouraged everyone to get registered for and attend the AAA National Convention. He told us that there will be a vote on a by-law change at the convention to allow only active members the opportunity to vote on delegates to the convention. He also told the board that national membership was up 20% and that Certified Angus Beef set a new all-time high in the month of July for product sold. The promotions committee had no report. The IBA report was given by Sheila Grobosky. She told us that Beef Quality Assurance certification classes will be held this winter. The Illinois Angus News Committee

report to the board was given by Jill Johnson. She told us that the current Illinois Beef magazine containing the Illinois Angus News issue for September/October is out. Jill Johnson discussed the IBA junior board elections that were held during the Illinois State Fair. We have three IJAA members that are serving on the IJBA board: Gabrielle Lemenager, Keegan Cassady, and Kalie Rumbold. We had no reports from the Nominating, Promotions, or Banquet committees.

Old Business: None

New Business: Kevin Rose brought concerns, from the membership to the board, about the Illinois Angus News. Some members of IAA are not IBA members and thus do not receive the magazine. A motion was made by Scott Anderson to print the Illinois Angus News separately and mail it out to the members that are not IBA members. Garrett Lampe seconded this motion and it passed. There was a motion to amend the previous motion brought to the floor by Alan Miller. If the price to mail the September issue exceeds $1,200 the decision to mail the issue is made by the executive committee. The motion was seconded by David Jenkins and carried. The board also discussed making the Nominating Committee responsible for nominating the IAA representative for the Illinois Beef Expo board. Scott Anderson made a motion to adjourn the meeting. It was seconded by Carla Jurgenson. The meeting was adjourned at 9:40 p.m.

At Rhodes Angus our breeding priority is fertility and extended cow productivity in a limited resource fescue environment. It has been our

experience that AI sires with good numbers can work but bulls with great big numbers seldom do. The use of highly proven AI sires and adherence to strict culling, although not glamorous, yield consistent, predictable, very acceptable results and gives us the ability to tell our bull customers what

to expect out of our bulls and how best to use them.

Apply for Angus Summer InternshipsDeadline to submit application is Feb. 5, 2016.

College students with an interest in the livestock business should consider applying for a summer internship with the American Angus Association. The 10-week, paid internship programs offer three students a chance to gain real-world knowledge and experience in the beef cattle industry.

The member-driven organization provides internship opportunities through the events and education department, communications and public relations, and the Angus Journal editorial team. Application details are outlined below, and all materials must be received by Feb. 5, 2016.

Applicants must be enrolled in an agriculture-related major, and consider themselves a self-starter, detail-oriented and an outgoing individual who has the ability to work well with others. Travel to the 2016 National Junior Angus Show (NJAS), Leaders Engaged in Angus Development (LEAD) Conference, and other shows and events is expected.

To apply, send a cover letter, résumé and references to Jaclyn Clark, events and education director, American Angus Association, 3201 Frederick Ave., Saint Joseph, MO 64506, or email [email protected].

College students with a passion for agricultural communications would make an excellent addition to Angus Media’s communications team. From print stories to television scripts, and photography to graphic design, the summer intern will experience all facets of communications for the American Angus Association.

Applicants should have strong writing and design skills, in addition to having completed coursework in news and feature writing, editing and design. Experience in photography, video and social media is an asset in this fast-paced internship.

To apply, send a cover letter, résumé, references and writing samples to Jena McRell, digital editor, Angus Media, 3201 Frederick Ave., Saint Joseph, MO 64506. For more information, contact McRell at 816-383-5100 or [email protected].

Working closely with the communications intern on the Angus Media team, the Angus Journal offers a college junior or senior the opportunity to be part of its editorial team for the summer. The writing-intensive internship offers the selected intern an opportunity to participate in producing various publications, including the Angus Journal, the Angus Journal Digital, the Angus Beef Bulletin, the Angus Beef Bulletin EXTRA, the Angus Journal Daily, editorial websites, and social media efforts.

The internship will be flexible enough to tailor to the strengths and needs of the intern, but many duties can be expected. Experience in news and feature writing, editing and photography are strongly suggested.

To apply, send a cover letter, résumé and writing samples to Shauna Hermel, Angus Journal editor, 3201 Frederick Ave., Saint Joseph, MO 64506. For more information, contact Hermel at 816-383-5270 or [email protected].
