Principal’s Message Collective Wellbeing—Keeping our students safe

Lockdown Drill Next week we will be holding a mandatory emergency lockdown drill. Emergency drills are undertaken each year to ensure that all staff and students know what to do in case of an emergency. If you happen to be on site when a drill is conducted, you will also become part of the process. We appreciate your assistance in helping us keep our school safe.

Playground Safety On Wednesday during the staff meeting, teachers conducted a risk assessment on playground safety. We identified that an area for improved safety is during lunchtime when students move between the oval and the COLA. As a result, commencing next week, students will only move between the two areas during the half time lunch bell when the teachers change duties. This will ensure improved supervision for all students. Student Wellbeing Support Officer As part of our Strategic Direction 1 - Collective Wellbeing, we have employed a Student Wellbeing Support Officer to work at Illawong Public School two days per week for the rest of 2018. Jo Tsangarides (Miss Jo) will work as a Student Wellbeing Support Officer on Mondays and Wednesdays in Term 3 and then Mondays and Tuesdays in Term 4, 2018. The Student Wellbeing Support program is partially funded by the Department of Education under the state government’s Student Wellbeing Support Program (SWSP) and the remainder of the program is funded by the school and from community donations. I will be required to participate in an annual reporting and program evaluation. Miss Jo has 17 years experience as a School Counsellor at an independent school and whilst her role at Illawong Public School is not a school counsellor as such, she brings a wealth of knowledge to this role that will help support us to improve the wellbeing of all students.

What is the role of the student wellbeing support officer?

Miss Jo’s key tasks will include: Working closely with our school learning and support team to deliver student resilience and wellbeing services. Supporting the social and emotional wellbeing of students. Developing relationships with, and referring students to specialist services within the school or externally, under the supervision of the school principal. Attending Parents & Citizens’ meetings and parent workshops as required to provide details of the program and the services that are available. Facilitating community partnership programs between the school and the wider community, under the supervision of the school principal.

Principal’s Message Student Wellbeing K-2 - Early Intervention Program; GETTING ON TRACK IN TIME - GOT IT!

Getting on Track in Time - Got It! is an early intervention mental health program for children in Kindergarten to Year 2 and their parents and carers. The program is school-based and is led and delivered by specialist NSW Child and Adolescent Mental Health teams in partnership with school staff and the Department of Education. The Got It! team works collaboratively with education staff, parents/carers and children to provide an evidence-informed approach to enhance social and emotional skills. The program helps parents and schools to identify children’s social and emotional difficulties and supports them to enhance social and emotional skills, and address any challenging behaviour. If you would like to find out more, an information session will be held in our Learning and Support room (E Block, upstairs) on Tuesday 30 October 2018 at 9:45am, all parents of students in years K-2 are welcome.

Student Wellbeing - Attendance and Absences Parents must ensure their children attend school every day. On occasion, your child may need to be absent from school. Justified reasons for student absences may include:

being sick or having an infectious disease

having an unavoidable medical appointment

being required to attend a recognised religious holiday

exceptional or urgent family circumstances e.g. attending a funeral Parents must provide an explanation for absences to the school within 7 days from the first day of any period of absence. Where an explanation has not been received within the 7-day timeframe, the school will record the absence as unjustified on the student’s record.

Transforming Learning—Community Consultation Survey School Bell Times The survey will close on Friday 14 September 2018 so if you have not yet completed the survey, please consider doing so. The following link will take you to a very brief survey which will provide us with some information about your preferences for the morning and afternoon bell times. https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/V387WKB

Evidence-informed practice - Maths lessons

This fortnight I have enjoyed working with students during maths lessons. In 1/2 Namatjira we learnt about fractions and in 3/4 Olsen we learnt about the inverse relationship between multiplication and division. Visiting classrooms and team teaching is my favourite part of the job! Ms J. Birch Principal
