They Will Soon bo Built of Alumi- num Strongth and Iiightnoss tho Objects. Tho first regular Cutmrdur in 1840 was tho Britannia, 21)7 by 31 by 22, tonnngo 50."0, horso-pow- 710, says tho St. Jnmos Budget. Tho latest will bo 600 foot long, (15 foot wide, and about 1.1,000 tons gross register, with a propelling force of, sa 15,-(X- horses nominal. Both tonnage and etigino havo thus enormously increased in a few years' time, cl tho imagination or belief of men now living; while the general inereaso in our mercantile marine may bo interestingly noted by com- paring tho size of Lloyd's Register of 1831 an octavo volume of 7J by o hy 1.J inches with tho two fine qttaftos'of tho year 18D2, and 11 A by 10 by 2 inches, giving full particu- lars "of "tho 11,1100 steamships and sailing vessels, representing some 11,928,(521 tons, which mako up the fleet of Great Britain and hor colo- nies! Tho pleasure ''steamship of tho future" is a vast structure built of a metal combining almost unlimited strength with undreamt of lightness. Her dimensions will approximately bo three- times greater than the steamship Campania namely, 1S00 feet ly 1!)0 feet, and she will" be so constructed that, like the well-know- n polype Hydra of our ponds, should she by any possibility bo damaged 1)3' collision or stranding, each part of her would live and maintain a soparato existence tho outcome of tho "cellular" system, of which wo now see but tho initial application. Save for four towering but slender poles, doing duty for signalling and effect, tho Alunnuia willbo mastless; but her gigantic oval-shape- d "smoke- stacks" will break tho monotony of an outline which otherwiso will roughly resemble tho Crystal Palace at Sydenham as it was originally built minus its transepts and water towers. Steam and electricity com- bined will be utilized to drive this mighty mass at great speed through tho waters; three, if not six, propel- lers being called into requisition for tho purpose. A perfect system of ventilation, sanitation, water supply. lighting, heating and cooking will reign throughout tho noble vessel; illumination and tho preparing of food being effected entirely by tho aid of tho goddess "Eloetra." A hotel like tho Motropolo will bo tho model upon which tho domestic arrangements of this singular steam- ship will bo based. There will bo public dining and drawing rooms, accommodation for private parties, ladies' boudoirs, snuggeries for smok- ing, billiard-room- s (practicable iu lino weather), a library alliliated with Mudio's, a duly licensed place of worship, a concert-roo- m and theater, a tennis court, a rifle gallery, a gymnasium and every possible and imaginable facility for athletic exor- cise and recreation. But the main feature will bo tho general division of this floating palaco into tenements or Hats complete in themselves, and consisting of say two good-size- d sittin- g-rooms and four or live bed- rooms, with domestic otlices at- tached. These will bo taken by tho year, leased or sold in perpetuity to fam- ilies desirous of tho advantages but not possessing tho means of keeping up a yacht, but who will readily pay a largo rental for tho privilege of having a homo all tho year round which they can join at any port, sublet if thoy choose, and where they can always enjoy congenial society amid varied scones in a gonial climate. Tho route of tho Aluminia will bo determined by bal- lot; tho general service will bo as at any largo hotel ashore. A round of amusements will bo provided, and families will bo able to preserve strict privacy or join tho general throng, as thoj desire. Tho one thing strictly prohibited on board will bo private pianos and tho introduction of domestic pots, such as oats and dogs. No postman or telegraph boy will over interrupt tho rouosoof these marine domiciles. Seasickness will practically be ban- ished, and those who hereafter "go down to tho sea in ships" and "do business iu great waters" will, in passing tho "steamship of tho fut- ure," salute with mingled astonish- ment and reverence the ideal of Sir Thomas Moore's "Utopia" riding in silont and resistless majesty over tho conquered wavenof theonco-intract-abl- o ocean. horses nominal. Both tonnageand etigino havo thus enormouslyincreased in a few years' time, cl

tho imagination or belief ofmen now living; while the generalinereaso in our mercantile marinemay bo interestingly noted by com-paring tho size of Lloyd's Registerof 1831 an octavo volume of 7 J byo hy 1.J inches with tho two fineqttaftos'of tho year 18D2, and 11 A by10 by 2 inches, giving full particu-lars "of "tho 11,1100 steamships andsailing vessels, representing some11,928,(521 tons, which mako up thefleet of Great Britain and hor colo-nies!

Tho pleasure ''steamship of thofuture" is a vast structure built of ametal combining almost unlimitedstrength with undreamt of lightness. Her dimensions will approximatelybo three- times greater than thesteamship Campania namely, 1S00feet ly 1!)0 feet, and she will" be soconstructed that, like the well-know- n

polype Hydra of our ponds, shouldshe by any possibility bo damaged1)3' collision or stranding, each partof her would live and maintain asoparato existence tho outcome oftho "cellular" system, of which wonow see but tho initial application.

Save for four towering but slenderpoles, doing duty for signalling andeffect, tho Alunnuia willbo mastless;but her gigantic oval-shape- d "smoke-stacks" will break tho monotony ofan outline which otherwiso willroughly resemble tho Crystal Palaceat Sydenham as it was originallybuilt minus its transepts and watertowers. Steam and electricity com-bined will be utilized to drive thismighty mass at great speed throughtho waters; three, if not six, propel-lers being called into requisition fortho purpose. A perfect system ofventilation, sanitation, water supply.lighting, heating and cooking willreign throughout tho noble vessel;illumination and tho preparing offood being effected entirely by thoaid of tho goddess "Eloetra."

A hotel like tho Motropolo will botho model upon which tho domesticarrangements of this singular steam-ship will bo based. There will bopublic dining and drawing rooms, accommodation for private parties, ladies' boudoirs, snuggeries for smok-ing, billiard-room- s (practicable iulino weather), a library alliliated withMudio's, a duly licensed place ofworship, a concert-roo- m and theater,a tennis court, a rifle gallery, agymnasium and every possible andimaginable facility for athletic exor-cise and recreation. But the mainfeature will bo tho general divisionof this floating palaco into tenementsor Hats complete in themselves, andconsisting of say two good-size- d sittin-

g-rooms and four or live bed-rooms, with domestic otlices at-tached.

These will bo taken by tho year, leased or sold in perpetuity to fam-ilies desirous of tho advantages butnot possessing tho means of keepingup a yacht, but who will readily paya largo rental for tho privilege ofhaving a homo all tho year roundwhich they can join at any port, sublet if thoy choose, and wherethey can always enjoy congenialsociety amid varied scones in agonial climate. Tho route of thoAluminia will bo determined by bal-lot; tho general service will bo as atany largo hotel ashore. A round ofamusements will bo provided, andfamilies will bo able to preservestrict privacy or join tho generalthrong, as thoj desire.

Tho one thing strictly prohibitedon board will bo private pianos andtho introduction of domestic pots, such as oats and dogs. No postmanor telegraph boy will over interrupttho rouosoof these marine domiciles.Seasickness will practically be ban-ished, and those who hereafter "godown to tho sea in ships" and "dobusiness iu great waters" will, inpassing tho "steamship of tho fut-ure," salute with mingled astonish-ment and reverence the ideal of SirThomas Moore's "Utopia" riding insilont and resistless majesty over thoconquered wavenof theonco-intract-abl- o

Saturday, Jan. 1.',, 1S03.

The happenings at the bighouse during the past six

months (by happenings we

mean the many changes madein the Ministers), reminds us ofthe two men who were wad-

ing the San tee River. Thereis a swamp six miles wide oneach side of it, and when themen had got about half waythrough one said to the other,"Bill, I'm blowed if I don't be-

lieve we've struck this ereriver lengthways." If therehappens to be a tourist in thecity who found the climate andhis surroundings sufficientlyagreeable to keep him herefrom start to finish of the Leg-

islature, he will feel, as did theindividual mentioned above,

that he struck Cabinet form

ing lengthwise.

It's about the same with ourstock of goods, no matterwhich way you take it you feel

that you've struck it the longway it's the biggest in townand from it the mercantilebusiness in the other islandsis supplied. And we violateno confidence when we assertthat about four-fifth- s of theindividual consumers in Hono-

lulu get their supplies for thehouse from this same source.

Last week we said a word

or two about plantation sup-

plies and mentioned, incident-

ally, plows. We are fond ofmaking statements and doublyso when we are able to verifythem the next week. Here is

an instance, The person who

doesn't want to hear should

put'dn ear nfu'ffs:

"We are so well pleasedwith your 14-inc- h HendryBreaker that we are by thismail ordering, through ouragents, two more, one 14 inchand one 16 inch. The pieceof ground we are using thisone on is full of stone andsoon uses our other plows up,but yours stands the roughwork well and turns the sodwhen the others only "root."

"Yours truly,Signed: "H. Lidgati:,

"Manager Hamakua Plan'th."January 8, 189.3."

We've told stories of this

character so often during the'past year, that it is getting to

be as much of'an old friend as

the tale at the head of this

column, but they have an

ama.in' influence on the plow

trade. Nine people out of

ten will accept the assuranceof a person using an articlerather than listen to the manwho is selling the goods.Realizing this to be a fact webuy good things and rely upontheir good service to adver-

tise for us, as in the case ofthe Aermotor and sundryother specialties which Ave

have put before the public. The result is that the peoplefrom Niihau to Hawaii singthe praises for us.

We have a corner on thebest brands of Manila rope.We sell it lower than anyother good rope can be soldin Honolulu. Private familieshave little use for it, but plan-tations and vessels do. Wecan supply them from thesmallest size up to cjinch.

A TRAGEDY IN SPAIN.

Watorcrosa Rocomraondod na a Ourofor Consumption.

"I soo in 's Republic," saidDr.. John B. Potors of Boston at IhoSt. Jainos, "that a Mr. Dolano is cur-

ing himself of the tobacco habit byeating watercress. That romotly isknown all ovor tho southorn part ofSpain, and speaking of it remindsmo of a tragedy that happonod inMadrid many years ago. There was

physician thoro whoso fame wasknown all ovor Spain. Crowds flock-

ed to his ofllco every day. It wasimpossible for him to dovoto but aminuto's attention to each patient. J

One day a pale, emaciated facostood boforo him. Tho physiciangave him a glanco and told him thathis days wore nuinbored and hismalady, which was consumption, had- -

passed that stage whon plrysic woulddo him any good. Tho young manpleaded for tho famous doctor to dosomothing.

'"I have plonty of money,' said ho,'and am willing to givo j'ou all of myearthly possessions if j'ou will helpmo.'

" 'I have heard," said tho physi-cian, "that at a certain place inFranco,' naming tho point, 'con-sumptives have been cured by eatingwatorcross. I place no confidence intho story, however, but you mighttry it.'

"The young man loft. Six monthsolapscd. The doctor's oflico wascrowded again one day. That sameyoung man was among them. Howaited until oven' ono had departedand then ho stood boforo tho doc-tor. His chest was broad and strong, his oyes were bright, his face ruddywith tho bloom of health, his formstately, erect and handsome.

" 'I have come,' said he, 'to pay youwhatever sum you ask. You havesaved 1113" life, and all my uionoy be-longs to you if you want it.'

"The doctor looked at his visitorwith amazement. Ho could scarcelyboliovo that the man who stood bo-foro him was tho same whom ho hadadvised to go to Franco and eatwatercress. Ho wont to his deskwithout saying a word, pulled out apistol and killed him. Instantly hobegan to cut him open and was justin tho act of extracting his lungswhen otlicers, who had heard thepistol's report, rushed in and arrest-ed him. Ho was placed on trial forhis life, and his plea of dofonso wasthat ho had saved tho man's life andhe had the right to take it in tho

of science. Ho was acquitted, but ho never had the chance of ana-lyzing tho dead man's lungs to as-

Tho first is tho explanationof tho now treatment for nervousdisoases by injecting beneath thoskin a solution of phosphate of soda, which in this way is not modified bypassing through tho digestive tract, but is taken up in tho original formand acts directly on tho nervous sys-tem, a portion of the organism forwhich it has the greatest affinity.

M. Albert Robin uses a solution offive grammes of- - phosphate of sodain 100 grammes of sterilized distilledwater. This entirely now methodis remarkably for its simplicity andharmlossness and is worthy of beingbrought to tho attention of tho pro-fession. It is still at its inceptionand it will probably bo perfectedlater on. Its marks a stride forwardin tho path so brilliantly opened upby tho researches of Dr. Brown --

Soquard and for which ho must someday receive suitable recognition inoilieial circles.

Tho second fact is the researchesof an English physician, Mapothor,on tno influence ot loou on ualunoss.Since hair contains not less than 5percent of sulphur and when gray 20percent of silica, and 10 percent ofiron and manganuzo, ho claims thattwo of tho forms of foods that uoar-l- y

every ono takes each day beefand milk have by their chemicalcomposition tho effect of annihilatingthese primordial elomonts of thehair and withering tho roots.

Mapothor thinks that differentalbuminoid foods and starchy sub-stances, particularly dark coloredoats, which contain twonty-tw- o per-cent of silver, have a powerful oilbctin making tho hair grow. Tho racesof men that have tho finest hair arousually those living on starchy sub-stances and vegetables.
