You will find here a wide selection of activities for you to try and I would encourage all members to really engage with Summer School and to get involved with as many sessions as you can. This is a great opportunity to try something new and to be adventurous. So – I hope that you take time to explore the programme and find some things to interest and delight you for this week of activities. I would personally like to take this opportunity to thank all the leaders who have offered to run the sessions for us – without them Summer School could not happen at all. Also, I would like to thank all U3A colleagues plus staff at KIVCA who have all helped to make the Summer School possible. Angie Grain (Summer School and Groups co-ordinator) APPLYING FOR PLACES - There are three methods of applying for places at Summer School sessions: 1 For those with access to the internet: The most efficient method of application is via the website (http://ilkleyu3a.org/). Dances and the music come from countries throughout the world. Since the 1970’s many newer dances have been choreographed and found their way into the more traditional circle dance repertoire. Above all, it is joyful, inclusive and anyone can do it!

Tuesday 5th July ‘This Changes Everything’ Film and Discussion Not to be missed!! The film is based on the book of the same name written by Naomi Klein, who makes a powerful indictment of the way big business blocks the positive steps needed to deal with climate change.'. It traces the effects of large fuel, energy and mineral companies on local communities, in areas such the Tar Sands region of Alberta, the Powder River Basin in Montana, a place in Northern Greece affected by mining and drilling and a wetlands region in India that will be devastatingly impacted if a proposed coal fired power plant goes ahead. In all the areas local groups have acted bravely and sometimes effectively to resist the developments and the associated environmental and social devastation. Klein narrates the film, linking carbon emissions with our economic system that demands continuing growth and exploitation. She argues cogently that we should seize this opportunity to transform and radically improve that system. Despite the indifference of big business, the overall message is one of hope that things can change and that community action can be a catalyst for the change that is so urgently needed. The film lasts 90 minutes and will be followed by discussion. Time 2.00 – 4.00 Venue TBC – possibly St Margaret’s No. of Places 50 tbc Leaders

to date over the last 50 years, I can tell you on good authority, we live in a mirage and there is no end to “living". That is, on the basis of cosmology, we are immortal. This may come as sad news to those of you who wish to truly shuffle off this mortal coil. To all intents and purposes, if you don't want to know, you won't know anything different from generations of the zombies we are and those who went before us. However, it can be reassuring to know that death has no sting for the dead, as far as we know, for there is no sensing mechanism. For all that, one might be comforted to know this and as a member of the living dead I would like to discuss with you how the information offered might change your philosophy After a slide presentation at the start of the session we will discuss the content and how it could affect our philosophy. Wednesday 6th July By Rail to Bolton Abbey Until the Beeching cuts to our railway system removed thousands of miles of track in the mid 1960’s, it was possible to travel from Ilkley to Bolton Abbey by rail. The Midland Railway opened the line from Ilkley to Skipton in 1888 and trains served intermediate stations at Addingham, Bolton Abbey and Embsay. After the line closed in 1965, the rails were lifted and demolition of many of the major structures was carried out. The section between Ilkley and Bolton Abbey has disappeared under new building or been absorbed into the agricultural landscape. Through archive photographs of the line’s construction, working and demolition, and contemporary views documenting its subsequent disappearance, the presentation traces the course of the railway through time and distance, to provide a unique insight into an important piece of our local industrial and social history.????? Thursday 7th July Poetry Reading Truly fine poetry must be read aloud,” so said Jorge Luis Borges. More prosaically Stephen Fry: Among the pleasures of poetry is the sheer physical, sensual, textural, tactile pleasure of feeling the words on your lips, tongue, teeth and vocal cords.” Enjoy an afternoon sharing poetry with a dozen or so other members. Bring along your choice of one or two “Poems for a Summers Day”, and to recognise the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare’s death your favourite line or two from Shakespeare too. Friday 8th July Archaeology of Ilkley Moor This is an all-day walking tour to see the archaeological remains on the high ground at the west end of Ilkley Moor. It complements last year’s Summer School walk which was at the east end of the moor. We will visit archaeology of all periods from the prehistoric up to the twentieth century, including rock art, cairns, peat works, Victorian reservoirs, military training grounds and the old golf course. We will also look as the changing pattern of vegetation at this part of the moor. The “tour guide” audio system will be available for the walk. The walk will begin and end at the entrance to Silver Well Cottage on Keighley Road, but we will assemble at Darwin Gardens where there is more parking, and car share to go up to Silver Well. We will start out at 10.15AM and finish at about 3.30PM. The finishing time is approximate as it depends on the weather, the state of the ground and how long we spend talking! Please bring stout footwear and warm waterproof clothing. It is always much colder on the moor than it is in the town! You will also need a packed lunch and drinks. If you normally use a walking pole for moorland walks then bring it with you as some of the ground we will walk over is a bit rough. Pick up for those without cars will be made from Ilkley Railway Station (outside M&S) at 9.45AM. Please contact Peter Butler at [email protected] if you require this. Friday 8th July Art for Fun Come and practice your own form of art (watercolour, acrylics, silk painting, sketching, iPad art, whatever you like). There is no teaching, but by sharing the various ways of creating art (or the attempts to do so) we aim to create the right environment for you to enjoy this session. If you just want to have a go there will be some material for you to use. Otherwise bring your own and enjoy! If the weather is nice there is the possibility to go outside to the little park opposite or to the memorial garden. Friday 8th July The Ethics of Eating Is it wrong to eat animals? Is a government right to interfere with our eating habits? Should we take note of food air miles, Fairtrade and so on? Or is it just a pain in the neck having to consider these, and more, when we shop? Through discussion we will apply moral, or ethical, ideas and values to this everyday subject.

Friday 8th July Enjoying Gilbert and Sullivan Princess Ida has set up a women's university, how outrageous!! The U3A G&S group invites you to join them for an afternoon of topsy turvydom. Gilbert pokes fun at exaggerated masculinity and the very idea that women might aspire to higher education. Was he a misogynist? Maybe, but here he is a little more even handed.
