Project NameProject Name
West LRT Line• Approximately 5 mile light rail line.• (6) Total stations, three on grade, two below grade, and one above grade.• Provides access to downtown Calgary.• Adds to the existing light rail line.• Projected $556 million dollar cost before construction, projected at $700 million currently.• Design build project to open in 2012(and when I say design build I mean design as they are pouring concrete, and when I say “as they are pouring concrete” I mean up until the plastic set time).

Engineering Challenges• Massive job scope, many different parts
of the job going simultaneously.• Design build with not only design
changes but pour sequence changes that created re-design work.
• Contractor errors, tall shoring with leg loads up to 27kip. The contractor needed to be educated on tolerances and proper lateral restraint. They were required to remove and re-install shoring due to improper alignment of panels and posts.
• Additional design time required to correct contractor mistakes.
The Bottom Line• Total EFCO equipment duration of about 16
months.• Peak value of EFCO equipment on site was
$4.5 million.• The project is on schedule despite taking
EFCO equipment 6 months later than originally planned.
• Total local team effort from sales, field service, and a special hats off to Ilia Mayer who dedicated long hours and gray hairs to the completion of this project.
