I CAN SEE INTO THE FUTURE: Explora is growing. Explora is the first private non-profit 100% Italian Children’s Museum. It is a permanent facility dedicated to children (0-12),

schools and families that organizes workshops, events, exhibitions, theme days, training and CPD (Continual Professional

Development), camps and free-of-charge outdoor activities.

Explora was founded in 2001 thanks to the participation of institutions and corporate partners that believed in the project,

shared the same vision and supported the educational, cultural and scientific activities.

Today Explora is growing and is looking for friends to support the project to upgrade the facilities and create new areas for

temporary exhibition, interactive installations, exhibiting spaces for learning activities and scientific workshops, an open-air

theatre, vertical gardens, as well as a new green area where, for the last three, admission is free.

Explora è il primo Children’s Museum privato e non profit interamente

progettato con forze italiane: una struttura permanente dedicata ai bambini (0-12), alle

scuole e alle famiglie ai quali offre laboratori, eventi, mostre, giornate tematiche,

formazione e aggiornamento, campus e attività gratuite negli spazi esterni.

Explora è nato nel 2001 grazie alla partecipazione e al coinvolgimento di istituzioni

ed aziende private che hanno creduto nel progetto, che hanno condiviso gli stessi

obiettivi e che hanno sostenuto le attività educative, culturali e scientifiche.

Oggi “Explora cresce” e cerca sostenitori per la riqualificazione dei restanti edifici

con l’obiettivo di creare nuovi ambienti per accogliere mostre temporanee,

allestimenti interattivi, spazi espositivi per didattica e laboratori scientifici, un teatro

Un’occasione per giocare all'aria aperta e scoprire

come nasce una pianta, come si nutre, come si cura.

Un nuovo modo per rendere più verde la

città!

E l’acqua dove va? Nel Raingarden!

Un ciclo sostenibile di raccolta delle acque

piovane, che vengono riutilizzate per i servizi

igienici del museo e l’irrigazione delle aree verdi.

Il sistema costruttivo si basa su una struttura

metallica di ingombro ridotto, agganciata all'edificio

con zanche, sulla quale viene steso un telo in PVC

e un successivo rivestimento in cartonfeltro. Sul

tessuto tecnico vengono inseriti i semi o le essenze

già sviluppate che radicano in compartimenti

costituiti tra due strati di materiale fibroso, con

una densità di circa 30 piante al metro quadro e

piccole tasche modulari a disposizione di ogni

bambino, che può caratterizzarle e personalizzarle.

learn how a plant is born, how it grows

and how to look after it. A new way to

make our city greener!

Where does the water go?

To the Raingardens! A sustainable

water cycle to collect water from

drains to be reused in the museum

toilets and for irrigating the green

areas.

The basic structure is a compact

metal frame clamped to the wall of

the building covered first with a sheet

of PVC and then with a layer of felted

cardboard. Seeds or seedlings are

planted in compartments inserted

between two layers of fibrous

material with a density of around 30

plants per square meter: small

individual modular pockets for

children who can personalize them.

Con la ristrutturazione e la riqualificazione dei nuovi

edifici vengono realizzati nuovi spazi flessibili e

polifunzionali, dedicati alle mostre temporanee

e ai laboratori su scienza, ambiente ed energia.

Le due sale espositive (195 mq complessivi) sono

concepite come spazi divisibili e adattabili alle diverse

attività grazie a pareti mobili e scorrevoli.

Il lucernario sul tetto e la serra bioclimatica incrementano

l’apporto di luce naturale di questi grandi spazi,

comunque oscurabili con tende meccaniche in caso di

proiezioni o allestimenti dotati di particolari effetti di luce

artificiale.

EXHIBITING AREA:A SPACE DEDICATED TO INTERACTIVE EXHIBITIONS

Upgrading the current buildings and using the adjacent space will create new flexible

multifunctional spaces for temporary exhibitions and workshops dedicated to science,

the environment and energy. It will be possible to adapt and divide the two exhibition

halls (195 sq.m. in all) into spaces to suit different activities thanks to sliding elements.

The skylight and bioclimatic greenhouse will increase the amount of natural light in

these large areas.

It will be possible to darken these spaces for slideshows, film shows etc. or for

installations requiring particular artificial lighting effects as they will be equipped with

curtains.

Una parete interattiva e multifunzionale accoglie i visitatori con pannelli grafici e

informazioni sulle attività del museo. La facciata, dinamica e camaleontica, cambia

con l'avvicendarsi delle mostre, dei laboratori e degli eventi: una struttura

costituita da contenitori modulari arricchiti con oggetti, materiali di riciclo,

prodotti realizzati dai bambini.

La parete è realizzata con un traliccio in lega leggera posto parallelamente al

prospetto interno della nuova ala museale. Essendo una struttura di circa 90 cm di

ampiezza è possibile trasformarla in uno spazio da esplorare: ci si può

arrampicare, appendere, nascondere.

Nello spazio tra la parete interattiva e quella del museo si viene a creare l’atrio

di attesa del nuovo padiglione, uno spazio aperto verso la piazza e

attrezzato con armadietti e sedute per l’attesa del proprio turno d’ingresso. La

parete interattiva piega sull’angolo in prossimità della via Flaminia, sporgendo in

alto a bandiera, per segnalare la presenza del museo a tutti i passanti

A DYNAMIC FACADE: INTERACTIVE WALL

Visitors will be welcomed by an interactive multifunctional wall with graphic panels and information on the museum’s

activities. The dynamic, chameleon-like facade, a structure formed of modular containers embellished with objects, recycling

material and things made by the children who visit the museum, changes depending on the exhibitions, workshops and

events being held.

The wall, formed of a light alloy trellis, is placed parallel to the internal facade of the museum’s new wing.

As it is about 90 cm width, it can be transformed into a place to explore where children can climb, swing and hide. The

space between the interactive wall and the wall of the museum will form the entrance hall of the new pavilion, a space

opening onto the square equipped with lockers and seats for people waiting to go in. The interactive wall is positioned so

the uppermost part can be clearly seen by passers-by from the corner near the main road - via Flaminia - and will draw

people’s attention to the museum.

Le nuove aree verdi sono concepite come un gioco in

continua evoluzione dove conoscere la natura

attraverso laboratori di botanica e di educazione

ambientale. Un orto didattico rappresenta un

ambiente ideale dove svolgere attività che possono

spaziare dalla manualità alla creatività, avvicinando i

bambini al mondo della biodiversità e al ciclo delle

stagioni, stimolando la loro coscienza ecologica.

Seminare, coltivare, aspettare, annaffiare,

proteggere, raccogliere, riprodurre, tutte azioni

condizionate dal tempo e dal rispetto per i cicli naturali.

Un orto per imparare a riconoscere le piante

ornamentali, quelle odorose, le piante per le magie, le

piante commestibili e quelle velenose!

TEACHING GARDENS: GREEN TO LEARN

The new green areas are conceived as a constantly-evolving game where children can

learn about nature by participating in botanic and environmental education

workshops. A Teaching Garden is the perfect place to organize creative hands-on

activities to familiarize children with biodiversity and the season cycle by raising their

ecological awareness.

Sowing, cultivating, watering, protecting, reaping and reproducing: all actions governed

by time and respect for natural cycles. Learning how to recognize, respect and live not

only with ornamental, perfumed and edible plants, but also those used in magic and

even poisonous ones!

piccolo anfiteatro integrato nei giardini

dal disegno della pietra inserita nel verde, un

palcoscenico in legno e comode sedute, ombreggiata

alla musica, alla scienza, all'improvvisazione, alla

didattica: è un luogo ideale per ospitare un evento,

A small, integrated amphitheatre will be built in the gardens of the green

area, with free admission. This open-air theatre, a small semi-circular space

created by exploiting Explora’s naturally sloping gardens, will have stone

tiers, a wooden stage and confortable seating. Shaded by colourful

flowering trees, it will be surrounded by espalier bushes.

An open-air space dedicated to encounter, play, music, science,

improvisation and teaching/learning, is the ideal venue for a special event,

a show or simply a party.

Le nuove aree espositive confinano con una serra bioclimatica di 37

mq che incrementa la qualità dell’illuminazione delle sale adiacenti e

riduce il consumo di energia utilizzata per l’illuminazione

artificiale degli spazi. Una serra bioclimatica è un elemento di

architettura ecocompatibile che, attraverso lo sfruttamento

passivo della radiazione solare, fornisce calore all'edificio,

contribuendo alla riduzione dei consumi energetici.

La struttura della serra, interamente realizzata in vetro e attrezzata

con orti e giardini verticali funziona anche come serra captante,

contribuendo a ridurre il fabbisogno energetico invernale per

il riscaldamento.

Al suo interno si svolgono attività ludico didattiche dedicate ai cicli

naturali della coltivazione e dell’alimentazione per permettere ai

bambini di scoprire il mondo vegetale attraverso la piantumazione e i

travasi. Sulla copertura della serra è integrato un sistema fotovoltaico

di moduli semi trasparenti per produrre sufficiente energia per il

funzionamento di tutta la serra.

BIOCLIMATIC GREENHOUSE: ECO-FRIENDLY ARCHITECTURE

The new exhibiting areas adjoin the bioclimatic greenhouse (37 sq. m.) that enhances the light quality

of the adjacent rooms and reduces the amount of energy used for the artificial lighting of these spaces.

A bioclimatic green house is an element of the eco-friendly architecture which, through the passive

exploitation of solar radiation, heats the building and helps to save energy.

The green house, made entirely of glass and equipped with kitchen gardens, vertical gardens and a

small phytodepuration basin, also acts as a sun trap and helps to reduce energy needs for heating in

winter.

Inside the greenhouse learning through play activities dedicated to the natural cycles of cultivation and

food, such as planting and repotting, familiarize children with the plant world.

The greenhouse roof is formed of integrated semi-transparent photovoltaic panels that generate

enough energy to satisfy the entire needs of the greenhouse.

SERRABIOCLIMATICA

Explora cresce partendo dalla riqualificazione

del nuovo ingresso principale. Concepito

come una piazza tematica aperta sulla città, lo

spazio è dotato di una copertura retrattile per

offrire ombreggiatura e riparo nei mesi estivi,

dare supporto alla comunicazione e contribuire

all’inserimento di elementi sospesi. L’area

calpestabile della piazza-ingresso, è pavimentata

in ghiaia stabilizzata colorata e occupa una

superficie di 540 mq, attrezzata con sedute e

giochi distribuiti sulle aiuole verdi.

Sempre aperto al pubblico, il nuovo

ingresso è un luogo di ritrovo e intrattenimento,

funge da cerniera tra gli spazi espositivi, la

biglietteria, il bookshop e il bar-ristorante.

Una nuova cancellata, frutto della collaborazione

tra bambini e giovani artisti, marcherà il confine

con la via Flaminia, garantendo la continuità

visiva tra questa, il padiglione centrale e

l’ingresso.

OPEN SQUARE: A SPACE FOR EVERYONE

Conceived as a theme square opening onto the city, the new main

entrance area is equipped with a retractable roof that not only provides

shade and cool for visitors in the summer months but can also be used

as a means of communication.

The square-cum-entrance, paved in coloured stabilized gravel, covers an

area of 540 sq. m. in all, including the green areas with seats and games.

Always open to visitors, the new entrance is an ideal place to meet and

relax and is the connective element between the exhibition spaces, the

ticket office, the bookshop and cafeteria.

A new entrance gate, designed by young artists with the collaboration of

children, will open onto via Flaminia thus ensuring visual continuity

between the main road, the central pavilion and the entrance.

ll progetto di ampliamento di Explora risponde

alla necessità di incrementare la superficie

destinata alle attività didattiche, moltiplicando gli

spazi per i laboratori.

Sono parte del progetto gli spazi dedicati a

laboratori didattici e alla formazione, ai meeting

e alle attività congressuali con ingresso

indipendente su via Flaminia (105 mq): spazi

arredati e flessibili per accogliere qualsiasi

iniziativa anche formativa.

Il laboratorio “Officina in cucina” è ampliato

e occupa una superficie di 43 mq per offrire

attività dedicate all’educazione alimentare.

Per i nuovi nati e i loro genitori un micro nido

aziendale, spazi per il personale e per servizi.

WORKSHOP SPACE: A PLACE FOR EXPERIMENTATION

The Explora expansion scheme responds to the need to extend the

space dedicated to learning activities by increasing the number of its

laboratories. The spaces dedicated to learning and training laboratories,

meetings and conferences with an independent entrance on via Flaminia

(105 sq.m.) are all an important part of the scheme. Flexible spaces will

be fitted out for all kinds of training activities.

The kitchen laboratory “Officina in Cucina” will be enlarged to 43 sq.m.

so it will be suitable for food and nutritional science learning activities.

A further 115 sq.m. will become a micro-créche for newborns and their

parents and will be linked to the various services.

GREEN WALL: A LIVING WALL

Besides being an open laboratory for the study of energy efficiency in buildings, the green wall at the

entrance helps to reduce the pollution in an urban area and provides a space for biodiversity. A living wall

that will be part of both the active and passive integrated renewable energy systems for the enhancement

of the energy performance in the entrance hall, the bookshop, the ticket office and cafeteria. A wall that,

like the vegetation, changes with the seasons.

This is an innovative example of bioclimatic architecture and an important feature for the development and

upgrading of this urban neighbourhood. This innovative green infrastructure will:
