In the streets are jingling belts, an appeal to the passerby to drop a coin in the Salvation Army pot. Windows are decorated with holly and streets with gaily colored lights. "What are you going to buy Mother, Dad or Friend for Christmas?" is the question that seems to be on everybody's lips.

The United States is planning for the Yuletide. E.ven the newspapers assume a gayer, colored, hew. That would not be so remarkable under ordinary circumstànces. Every year we bave clone aboUt exactly the same thing, in a smalter or greater scale since

· the birth of our nation, but it is a thing that wc should consider with deep gratitude under the present circumstances.

Europe and nearly ali the world, outside of this Western Hemisphere, is embroiled in bloody war. Much of Europe is··writing under the conqueror'sheel. Persons by the thousands, yea, millions, bave beert driven or transferred from their homes into strange lands. There is no planning outside of our Conti~ nent for tomorrow.

There is no planning for Johnnie's or Mary's eductation.

There is no planning far the consummation of romances by marriage at the alter.

There is no planning for the vacation of the coming Wirtter or the family vacation for the coming Summer. There is only a hope and a wish that tonight they might not come with waring planes and death-dealing bombs.

Deep in the bowels of the earth, people ~re seeking refuge in the greater cities of Europe and Asta. The nights are filled with tetror . There is no thought or p la n for tomorrow.

Let us, for that day at least, forget the things that worry us. In thcir places let us substitute thoughts of tbc many things for wl'.iich wc may be thankful. Let us forgive our enemies and lean niore heavily upon the staff of friendship.
