Our April speaker, Alessandro Cartumini, is the Executive Chef of Four Seasons Resort The Biltmore and features local produce on his menus as part of his community-focused program. He brings more than 18 years of experience with Four Seasons. Born in Italy, he grew up in a family devoted to food. His father was a pastry chef, and his grandfather also worked in the culinary field. Alessandro learned much of his trade by reading cookbooks as a child and by emulating his family’s talents in the kitchen. At age 14, he began an apprenticeship with the critically acclaimed chef Sergio Mei at the Pitrizza Hotel in, Sardegna, Italy.

To the delight of his guests, Chef Alessandro merges his European training, his Italian sensibility, and his mission for fresh, healthy, and well-balanced cuisine to create menus, which reflect the local bounty and regional flavors. Throughout two decades of culinary experiences with several five-star hotels, including Four Seasons properties from Milan to London to California, he understands that being innovative and creative makes the headlines, but ultimately it’s all about pleasing his guests and their palates which he strives to achieve every day.

In Memory of Sam Salario UNICO Member, Sam Salario passed away on February 26, 2016. Sam was unwavering in his support of all things Italian in our community. Rest in peace Sam – you will be very much missed. From the Independent:

Saverio "Sam" Salario 1920 - 2016

Saverio "Sam" Salario packed his bag and boarded the cyberspace train on February 26, 2016, bound for Camelot and other utopian destinations along the way. Saverio, son of Stefano and Teresa (LaBarbiera) Salario, was born in Tampa, Florida, on June 11, 1920. He is survived by two brothers, Joe and Luigi Salario, of Tampa, Florida. Many will mourn him, including his nieces Janet Stout Toms and Lucy Scaglione Rodriguez, nephew Steve Salario, cousins Sonny and Gigi LaBarbera, friend Gregg DeChirico, and a host of other family members, neighbors and friends.

Sam graduated Hillsborough High School, class of 1938. He served in the Coast Guard during WWII, making 28 crossings of the north Atlantic in troop transport convoys. After the war he continued his education at the University of Houston, where he began a career in real estate and acquired many properties, allowing him to retire by the age of 56. In 1976 he moved to Santa Barbara and became an active member of the community. His creative abilities flourished in his later years as he wrote many short stories and plays which capture the essence of his values and convey many of his observations on life's lessons.

A most magnanimous personality, Sam took an interest in everyone he met, mentoring and encouraging them to excel in all aspects of life. He will be missed.
