WELCOME TO APRIL AT IKEA

This month we’re proud to introduce products that help

bring nature indoors and reconnect with the senses.

The materials are natural and the colours are warm and

earthy; it’s about embracing imperfections and making

room for nature and relaxation. Fitting perfectly within

the Blurred Boundaries trend identified by IKEA for this

spring and summer, April News blends the boundary be-

tween indoor and outdoor furniture.

Among the highlights are products for a truly natural bed-

room. A new bedframe, bedside table and chest of draw-

ers are made of solid, renewable birch that’s sourced to

strict standards. This is in line with our goal of only using

wood from more sustainable sources by 2020. Comple-

ment the bedframe with our new rage of mattresses and

mattress pads made with organic materials for a healthy

sleep environment.

Another big piece of news is a modular storage system

that optimises the space throughout the home. Also

this spring, the living room welcomes a new sectional

sofa, pouffes and a tray table. For the kitchen, there’s

an open wall storage system that makes cooking easier,

along with a worktop and tap. Children can delight in

two new textile collections that pay tribute to the endan-

gered species of the world. Of course, there are also the

softer items for the home, and small decoration pieces

For the many changing needs at home, we’ve developed FRIDAFORS

tray table. Use it as a coffee table or bedside table, move to another

room, or stack it away. As functional as it is beautiful in blue, it’s the

removable tray and foldable legs that make it such a flexible table.

It can be assembled quickly and easily thanks to parts that click to-

gether and pre-drilled holes. The table legs are made from rubber-

Every VIDEBÄK rug has a unique design similar to a piece

of art. Woven with great craftsmanship, it comes from

our initiative of handwoven rugs in India and Bangladesh.

The irregular pattern has been woven in 100% wool in a

way that can’t be replicated by machines – making every

rug truly different from each other. The weavers creating

VIDEBÄK rug, as well as our other handmade rugs from

India and Bangladesh, use a new, improved loom. This

is the result of a development done by IKEA making the

loom more ergonomic and require less strength to use

than a traditional loom. This is all part of our commit-

ment to organised weaving centres with good working

conditions, fair wages, stable work and care for the en-

vironment.

JOFRID CUSHION COVER & THROW

Not only are JOFRID throws and cushion covers made

of cotton and linen, both natural materials, but they’ve

been dyed in a more natural way. We revived an old tra-

dition of dyeing with the help of nature’s colours in order

to reduce the environmental impact. This is part of a

pioneering project at IKEA utilising a completely new way

of dyeing textiles using agricultural waste products – like

leaves, nutshells and orange peel that would otherwise

be thrown out. These have given rise to natural and blu-

ish tones that will only become more beautiful with wear

and tear. Material expert at IKEA, Catherine Larsson, ex-

plains further:

“I heard of the new method and found it interesting for

us. Textile dyes are usually oil-based, but the dye we use

for JOFRID is instead based on completely natural and

renewable resources that look like and function in the

same way as chemical dyes. We’ve started on a small

scale, but aim to develop this and other projects as soon

as we can.”

By using nature’s own dyes, it means that we can create

beautiful textiles with long lifespans while being kinder

to the environment. We aim to develop this and use it

more in the future.

Combining Scandinavian birch with a design that breathes

berg share their ideas behind the collection:

“The inspiration for BJÖRKSNÄS collection comes from

make the furniture fit in many rooms. These are classic

KUNGSFORS WALL SYSTEM & ACCESSORIES

Inspired by chefs, but adapted for the home, we’re now introducing

KUNGSFORS wall system for an industrial-styled kitchen with open

storage. It’s been developed in collaboration with the Swedish top

chef Maximillian Lundin, who knows a lot about cooking in a home

environment and has contributed to making kitchen times as smooth

as possible through the new system:

“A home kitchen is of course not the same as a restau-

rant kitchen. But there are a lot of practical things to

be learnt from a restaurant kitchen. Like having uten-

sils and ingredients easily accessible so that you have a

good flow when cooking, and have plenty of space on the

kitchen worktop.”

And just like in a restaurant kitchen, we’ve focused on

durable materials and smart wall storage that frees up

space on the worktop for all creative home cooks.

Consisting of rails for installation, wooden and stainless-

steel shelves, storage grids, a magnetic knife holder,

Now there’s a great storage system available even for

HAT TEFJÄLL SWIVEL CHAIR

The HATTEFJÄLL swivel chair is deliberately different. When designer

Monika Mulder was asked to challenge the norm of a work chair from

a design perspective, she created something human, feminine and

elegant.

“We wanted people to look twice at the chair, to turn

around,” Monika says. “HATTEFJÄLL has a very subtle

waist. It indicates lower back support and brings in ergo-

nomic and emotional comfort.”

With IKEA’s ergonomic expertise, the chair has been made to support

all physical needs. With the possibility to adjust the back height and

seat depth, it’s designed so all different body types can find the ideal

sitting position.

Tested for office use, the chair has been swivelled hundreds of times,

tilted, pushed, rolled, burned and even had weights dropped on it to

make sure it meets industrial standards. HATTEFJÄLL swivel chair has

details like perfectly rounded corners with no fabric bunching. With

its modernistic shape, it looks more like an armchair than a work

chair — adding softness to create a homelier workspace.

DJUNGELSKOG COLLEC TION

We created the DJUNGELSKOG collection to highlight the beauti-

ful wild animals throughout the world which are endangered. De-

signed for 3-7 year olds, the animals in the collection make won-

derful friends to play with. IKEA also cares about animals and the

environment, and we work with various initiatives. For example, as

far back as the 1980s when a forest fire in Borneo destroyed a lot of

rainforest, IKEA stepped in to help. As Martin Petri, who works with

sustainability at IKEA, explains:

“When Ingvar Kamprad, founder of IKEA, heard about

the forest fire he wanted to contribute to the restora-

tion of the rainforest. That’s why, since 1998, we’ve fi-

nanced the project Sow a seed which has led to more

than 12,500 hectares of rainforest being replanted.”

With the replanting, the orangutan and other magnificent

rainforest animals could return to their habitats.

It also feels good to know that many of the patterns

in DJUNGELSKOG collection are printed with a pigment

print, which skips a large washing step during produc-

tion, and reduces water consumption by 30-40% com-

pared with the reactive printing technique. Printed on

materials such as lyocell and cotton from more sustaina-

ble sources, the collection is for lovers of both our planet

and the jungle.

Designed for 8-12 year olds, URSKOG collection contin-

ues the theme of DJUNGELSKOG collection, paying trib-

ute to the world’s endangered species. The tiger, panda

and other wild animals are found on quilt covers, towels

For Product Developer Anna Edlundh and her colleagues

it’s a given to choose materials and production methods

that are neither harmful to children nor our environment.

“It felt particularly good that we use materials such as

the cellulose fibre called lyocell, cotton from more sus-

tainable sources and polyester made from recycled plas-

tic,” says Anna.
