WELCOME TO APRIL AT IKEA

This month we’re happy to introduce products that help to reconnect with the senses. The launch brings nature indoors or expands the living space outdoors. The materials are natural, the colors are warm and earthy, the patterns are ethnic. It’s about embracing an imperfect style that makes room for nature and relaxation.

Among the highlights are products for a truly natural bedroom. A new bed frame, nightstand and chest of drawers are made of solid, renewable birch that’s sourced to strict standards. This is in line with our goal of only using wood from more sustainable sources by 2020. You can compliment the bed frame with our new range of mattresses and mattress toppers made with organic materials for a healthy sleeping environment.

For the living room we welcome a new sectional sofa, ottomans and a tray table. For the kitchen, there’s an open wall storage system that makes cooking easier, along with a countertop and faucet. Children can delight in two new textile collections that pay tribute to the endangered species of the world. You will also find softer items, decoration pieces and new speakers that will furnish your home with sound. Enjoy!

JOFRID CUSHION COVER & THROW

Not only are JOFRID throw and cushion cover made of cotton and linen, both natural materials, but they’ve been dyed in a more natural way. We revived an old tradition of dyeing with the help of nature’s colors in order to reduce the environmental impact. This is part of a pioneering project at IKEA utilizing a completely new way of dyeing textiles using agricultural waste products – like leaves, nutshells and orange peel that would otherwise be thrown out. These have given rise to natural and bluish tones that will only become more beautiful with wear and tear. Material expert at IKEA, Catherine Larsson, explains further:

“I heard of the new method and found it interesting for us. Textile dyes are usually oil-based, but the dye we use for JOFRID is instead based on completely natural and renewable resources that look like and function in the same way as chemical dyes. We’ve started on a small scale, but aim to develop this and other projects as soon as we can.”

By using nature’s own dyes, it means that we can create beautiful textiles with long lifespans while being kinder to the environment ─ so that nature can continue to inspire us in the future too.

KUNGSFORS WALL SYSTEM & ACCESSORIES

Inspired by professionals, but adapted for the home, we’re now introducing KUNGSFORS wall system for an industrial-styled kitchen with open storage. It’s been developed in collaboration with the Swedish top chef Maximillian Lundin, who knows a lot about cooking in a home environment and has contributed to making kitchen times as smooth as possible through the new system:

HATTEFJÄLL SWIVEL CHAIR

The HATTEFJÄLL swivel chair is deliberately different. When the designer Monika Mulder was asked to challenge the norm of a work chair from a design perspective, she created something human, feminine and elegant.

“We wanted people to look twice at the chair, to turn around,” Monika says. “HATTEFJÄLL has a very subtle waist. It indicates lower back support and brings in ergonomic and emotional comfort.”

With the help the IKEA team’s ergonomic expertise, the chair has been made to support all physical needs. With the possibility to adjust the back height and seat depth, it’s designed so all different body types can find the ideal sitting position.

Tested for office use, the chair has been swivelled hundreds of times, tilted, pushed, rolled, burned and even had weights dropped on it to make sure it meets industrial standards. HATTEFJÄLL has details like perfectly rounded corners with no fabric bunching. With its modernistic shape, it looks more like an armchair than a work chair — adding softness to a homelier workspace.

DJUNGELSKOG COLLECTIONWe have created DJUNGELSKOG to highlight the beautiful wild animals throughout the world which are endangered. Designed for 3-7 year olds, the animals in the collection make wonderful friends to play with and get consolation from as soft toys, on textiles and more. IKEA also cares about the animals and the environment, and we work with various initiatives. For example, as far back as the 1980s, when a forest fire in Borneo destroyed a lot of rainforest, IKEA stepped in to help. As Martin Petri, who works with sustainability at IKEA, explains:

“When Ingvar Kamprad, founder of IKEA, heard about the forest fire he wanted to contribute to the restoration of the rainforest. That’s why, since 1998, we’ve financed the project Sow a seed which has led to more than 12,500 hectares of rainforest being replanted.”

With the replanting, the orangutan and other magnificent rainforest animals could return to their habitats.

It also feels good to know that many of the patterns in DJUNGELSKOG are printed with a pigment print, which skips a large washing step during production, and reduces water consumption by 30-40% compared with the reactive printing technique. Printed on materials such as lyocell and cotton from more sustainable sources, the collection is for lovers of both our planet and the jungle.

Children love to mimic adults, indeed it’s part of their development, helping them to make sense of the world. So, it’s no surprise that when we adapted our POÄNG armchair for children, it was so appreciated. Now it’s time for our classic STRANDMON armchair. But making a children’s version isn’t just about shrinking the size of the adult chair, says Product Developer Nicolas Cortolezzis.

“Children do not have the same proportions as adults and they don’t sit like we do. They move around and like to put their feet up, which is why we made a fixed seat instead of having a loose cushion as the adult version.”

Nicolas and his team worked a lot with safety and ergonomics to make it stable and welcoming to sit-as-you-like. Just like its parent, the STRANDMON children’s armchair will stand daily wear and tear, it even has a more resistant fabric. This is a must when the armchair is not only a place to sit, but sometimes used as a desert island or the world’s highest mountain!

Designed for 8-12 year olds, URSKOG continues the theme of the DJUNGELSKOG collection, paying tribute to the world’s endangered species. The tiger, panda and other wild animals are found on duvet covers, towels and more. For example, there’s a print of a magnificent tiger on a duvet cover in comfortable lyocell and cotton.

For the Product Developer Anna Edlundh and her colleagues it’s a given to choose materials and production methods that are neither harmful to children nor our environment.

“It felt particularly good that we use materials such as the cellulose fiber called lyocell, cotton from more sustainable sources and polyester made from recycled plastic,” says Anna.
