Event overview
The 1st series of MUDS held at Universiti Pertanian Malaysia (UPM) saw 8 IIUM relay teams and 6
individuals out of which 95% of the contingent taking part in a duathlon for their very first time. All
team members gathered on time at the main stairs, Administration Building in IIUM for the bus which
turned up late. Luckily the bus arrived on time in UPM, merely a few minutes before race start. Sports
Assitant, Sister Umi Naziha Naim from the IIUM Female Sports Complex was the officer in charge
for the team. Team members were given mineral water, bread and RM10 each.
The 1st series was to expose the team members to the format of duathlons and to the basic things about
a multi-sports race; e.g. transition area, concept of drafting and non-drafting, race rules and
regulations and sporting etiquettes. The team performed fairly well for their first duathlon event
despite the crash-training which they have undergone two to three weeks before the event. Brother
Rizal, the athletic coach for IIUM Mustang and a few IIUM undergraduates were also there to show
support for the team.

EVENT OVERVIEW
The highlight of the 2nd
series was the late start of the IIUM contingent to the race event. The
event had already started for 5 minutes, before the IIUM contingent arrived at the start line.
This caused some chaos as the team had to work really hard to chase the front pack which
had started earlier, despite having the race start delayed just to wait for the IIUM contingent
to arrive.
The team had no choice but to perform their best and they did. Sports officer, Brother Mohd
Hazeezy Hj. Harith from the Female Sports Complex was in charge. However, no mineral
water was given to the participants before and after the race, due to some technical
miscommunication. However the participants were given RM10 each upon arrival at IIUM
after the race.
Coach Rizal and a few support crew from IIUM was also at the event to support and cheer for
the team.

EVENT OVERVIEW
The final series saw a big jump in the performance and achievement level of the IIUM
Contingent. Three teams l IIUM 8, IIUM3 and IIUM 1 made it to the top ten ranking for the
Men’s Relay category, while Brother Ammar Ahmad Ammar Muhd Asri missed only 1 rank
to gain the top ten position for Men’s University Individual Category. Sister Nor Juliana Ali
who is also a Powerbar sponsored athlete stole the show by taking the first place in the
Women’s University Individual Category and second overall place for Top University
Women Duathlete Award. The final series also saw IIUM’s sole Mixed Relay Team
comprising of Sister Siti Amizah, Brother Izzuwandi Abdullah and Brother Faiz Abu Samah.
However, the team was disqualified due to the shortage of loop by the team’s cyclist, a
technical mistake which could have been avoided.
No officer in charge escorted the IIUM contingent for the last series and no pocket money
were given to the team members. However, mineral water was given to all. The IIUM
Mustang’s athletic coach continued to show support for the team by showing up at the race
venue. The bus arrived on time this time around, and managed to get the team to UM, the
race venue, earlier.

COMMENTARIES
Transport :
The transport organization to transport the team to race venues is an important issue which
have to be reviewed. Ultimately, a delayed arrival of any participants to any race events for
that matter can cause the team to underperform or under achieve certain expectations. The
late arrival of the bus at IIUM as well as the race venues (UPM, UNITEN) could have been
avoided through fluid communication between the people in charge of ensuring that the bus
comes on time. Such technical mistakes should be avoided at all times and can’t be tolerated.
However, the bus did come on time, and reached the race venue earlier, which is a big
thumbs up. The team was able to prepare and gear themselves properly and efficiently before
race start, and performed their best for the last race.
Mineral water :
Water is very vital to all athletes, not only during training but also during race day. The
mineral water should be given at least a day before the race so that the team members can
organize the things that they need to bring to the race venue, and not during race morning.
Organization improvement can easily solve this problem. During the 2nd
series, the team was
utterly dehydrated post-race and no water was given to them, causing further exhaustion and
fatigue after a chaotic start due to the delayed arrival of the bus.
Things improved for the last series where the team members were given their supply of water
much earlier before the race. They were even replenished with additional mineral water post-
race.
Pocket money :
The pocket money wasn’t an issue, as the team is very thankful for the form of appreciation
shown by the university by allocating some budget for the race registration fees as well as
other support needs.
10
Uniform vest :
The team had initially requested for uniform vests for all team members, however it was not
granted. The team wore a uniform colour of red throughout the three series, which ultimately
became our official t-shirt colour for all three series, as can be seen in the attachment of this
report.
Training needs :
Technical
The team was basically under privileged in terms of training needs. This ranges from the
technical needs i.e. bicycle, bicycle gears. However, the IIUM Cycling Club was kind enough
to lend a few bicycles to the team, and for the 2 last series, a few better bicycles were
borrowed from IIUM Matric Nilai Campus.
Nutrition :
This is one of the important part of a training regime, but in the team’s case it was the most
neglected. The budget for nutrition, which is deemed vital to boost the athletes’ endurance
and fitness level, was not approved. As a consequence, no proper sports nutrition were given
to the athletes throughout their training and for the duathlon race.
However on several training sessions, sister Nor Juliana Ali one of the team members, did
sponsor some form of sports drink, bard and gels from her own stock. The team members
were also given advised on how to manage their nutrition and food intake in the leading
weeks towards the race during training and otherwise, as well as during the race day itself.
Training :
An intensive 3 weeks training schedule was prepared for the team relay members and the
individual category participants. Group training was held every Tuesdays and Thursdays at
the IIUM Male Sports Complex track under the coaching of Coach Rizal, assisted by sister
Nor Juliana Ali. On other days, training resume both individually and in group. All forms of
training were held within the IIUM campus except for the cycling training which were held
outside the campus; Genting Sempah, DUKE highways and the road leading to Kampung
Sungai Pusu. Training sessions include short runs, speed training, core strengthening,
stretching and recovery run. Rest days were allocated a day before and after all race days.

GRATITUDE
The team would like to express their highest gratitude and appreciation to the IIUM Sports
Unit for supporting this invitational event, and wishes more all-round support will be given
for future sporting events like this. Duathlon is an increasingly popular multi-sports event in
Malaysia, and participation of the community, at all levels is highly encouraged. The team
would also like to take this opportunity to thank all the officers of the Sports Unit for their
positive feedback in managing and making the team’s participation a reality. Thank you.
Many thanks also, to the IIUM Mustang’s athletic coach, brother Rizal for his unconditional
support in terms of training tips and guidance which he have generously shared with the team
during our training.
On a higher note, the IIUM contingent was highly covered and publicized in the MUDS
media coverage having been mentioned and even shown on the news and appeared in the
local news paper several times. Other than the media, the organizers also thanked IIUM for
supporting their event by sending a large contingent to the race. This wouldn’t have been
possible without the university’s support. So, thank you again.
