of Publications and Member of Board of Governors of IIMK has been unanimouslyelected the President of WAN-IFRA for a 2 year tenure beginning July 1, 2011.He is the first Indian and second Asian to be elected to this office.

WAN-IFRA based in Paris (France) and Darmstadt (Germany) is a globalorganisation of Newspaper Editors and Publishers. It represents more than 18,000publications, 15,000 Online sites and over 3000 companies in more than 120countries. The World Association of Newspapers, founded in 1948 and IFRA, theResearch and Service organisation founded in 1962, merged in 2009 to form WAN-IFRA. Its core mission is to defend and promote quality journalism, editorialintegrity, press freedom and development of new media business.

The Malayala Manorama group based in Kerala publishes Malayala Manoramadaily with a circulation of over 1.9 million copies per day. The group has 50

publications including The Week and Vanitha, a leading women’s fortnightly magazine. Malayala Manorama alsobroadcasts Manorama News, a 24 hour news channel, and has FM stations under the Radio Mango name. It is alsovery dominant in the digital space. Manoramaonline is one of the most widely read newspaper websites in India.

Jacob Mathew is currently a trustee of the Press Institute of India/Research Institute for Newspaper Developmentand is also on the Asia Board of INMA (International Newspaper Marketing Association).

He has served on the board and the Executive Council of the World Association of Newspapers (WAN). Jacob is thePast President of the Indian Newspaper Society (INS) and has been the past chairman of the Advertising StandardsCouncil of India (ASCI).

It is with pride that we come out with another edition of the IIMK newsletter.The last few months in IIMK included a plethora of activities which haveplaced IIMK in a rather unique and inimitable position.

While the inter-collegiate management festival, Backwaters-2011 broughttogether the best talent from all over the country to fight and win laurels, theinstitute also hosted Horizons-2011, the annual management conclave andSangram-2011, the IIMB-IIMK sports meet, which was won by the visitors.The Social Service Group, the unique and one-of-a-kind students’ communityat IIMK, was engrossed in a bustle of socially responsible activities includingan afforestation campaign, a career counselling program for Class X studentsof the district, spoken English classes for the mess workers, blood donationcampaign and many more. IIMK also made the mark of being the firstBSchool in the country to initiate a holistic simulation program termed as‘Managerial Perspective’, for the PGP15 batch which involved application ofall the Term 1 subjects. The institute also hosted an array of talks and seminarsby several luminous personalities including Mr. Bart Jackson, CEO ofPrometheus Publishing, Mr. V.R Ferose, Managing Director of SAP labs, Indiaand Professor Chinmoy Ghosh, Gladstein Professor of Business and Innovationat the School of Business, University of Connecticut among others. The campuswas vibrant in itself with the Diwali celebrations, Inter-hostel crickettournament, Dandiya nights, Hindi Diwas and a lot more! The PGP15 batchalso geared up for the summer placements with companies coming knockingeven after 100% placement of the batch.

In this edition, we have made a humble attempt to reflect the evolving face ofan institute, which is on the track to establish itself as the socially responsible,management ‘Think Tank’ of the country.

IIMK GLOGIFT 11Eleventh Global Conference on Flexible Systems Management

The eleventh global conference on flexible systemsmanagement, IIMK-GLOGIFT 11 hosted by IndianInstitute of Management Kozhikode and co-hosted by (1)Global Institute of Flexible Systems Management;(2) Department of Management Studies IIT Delhi and(3) Stevens Institute of Technology, New Jersey wasinaugurated by Professor Debashis Chatterjee, Director IIMKozhikode on 9th of December 2011. The theme of theconference is “Organizational Flexibility and

Competitiveness. The Conference Chair ProfessorNandakumar M.K. introduced the conference to theparticipants. In his speech he highlighted the importanceof organizational flexibility in sustaining competitiveadvantage of organizations in the turbulent businessenvironment of the 21st century. Professor DebashisChatterjee in his inaugural address emphasized theimportance of flexibility in the organizational systems andexplained how flexibility has been brought in to the systemsand processes at IIMK. Ms. Christine Williams, DirectorSystems Engineering Leadership Development, NASA(US) delivered the keynote address. She spoke on the topic“Agile Organizations Begin with Agile Employees”. Dr.Shyam Sethi President of Global Institute of FlexibleSystems Management and Prof. Sudhir K Jain Director,Department of Management Studies, Indian Institute ofTechnology Delhi also spoke on the occasion. TheConference Co-Chair Prof. Sanjay Jharkharia talked aboutthe relevance and scope of the conference and explainedabout the organization of the technical paper sessions.Professor Abhilash Nair, Conference Co-Chair deliveredthe vote of thanks and thanked all the stakeholders whohave worked tirelessly for the last one year to organizethis international conference. More than 100 delegates fromleading institutes, universities, research organizations,

corporate and government agencies participated in theconference. Four papers were presented during the plenarysessions between 9.30 AM and 11.00 AM on 10th and 11th

of December 2011. In addition to the plenary sessions, 106papers which were organized into three parallel tracks werepresented by the participants on both days between 11.30AM and 5.30 PM. This conference has been able to attractparticipants from various countries including the UnitedStates, United Kingdom, Germany, Japan and Indonesia.

On Saturday 10th of December, the conference started withthe plenary sessions at IIMK Auditorium at 9.30 AM. Thefirst plenary session was delivered by Dr Ana Maria Reyes,Partner, New Worlds Enterprise, LLP, Philadelphia, USA.She spoke about the effectiveness of virtual classrooms intoday’s environment. This was followed by another plenarysession by Mr. Shiva Kumar K. Swamy, Chief TechnologyOfficer, ZSL Inc, New Jersey, USA. He gave a talk on thetopic “Business Agility empowered by Smarter TechnologySolutions”. The plenary session was followed by paperpresentations by the participants between 11.30 AM and5.30 PM. In the evening there was a cultural programdepicting the martial art of Kerala namely “Kalarippayattu”and the art forms namely “Kathakali” and “Theyyam”. Thisprogram was followed by the conference dinner.

On Sunday 11th of December the first plenary session weredelivered by Professor Sushil from Department ofManagement Studies, IIT Delhi and he spoke about thetopic “Flowing Stream Strategy Incorporating Flexibilitythrough Confluence of Continuity and Change”. ProfessorTakao Fujiwara, Toyohashi University of Technology,Japan delivered the second plenary session and the title ofhis presentation was “Flexible decision of irreversibleinvestment under uncertainty”. The plenary session wasfollowed by paper presentations which were organized intothree parallel tracks. The paper presentations finished by5.30 PM. The conference concluded with a post-conferencetour to Wayanad on Monday 12th of December.

The International Conference on Information Technology,Systems and Management (ITSM 2011) was a jointinitiative of the Indian Institute of Management Kozhikode,the Indian School of Business Hyderabad, University ofTexas at Dallas, and George Mason University (USA), heldat IIM Kozhikode during 17-18 December 2011.

The inaugural ceremony started at 9.15 am on 17th

December with invocation followed by a welcome addressdelivered by Prof. Radhakrishna Pillai (Dean, IIMK &Organizing Chair ITSM 2011). Prof. Varghese S. Jacob(General Chair, ITSM 2011) enlightened the audience with

the scope and objectives of the conference. He is the SeniorAssociate Dean and Professor of Management Science andInformation Systems in the School of Management at theUniversity of Texas at Dallas. Prof. Debashish Chatterjee,Director, IIM Kozhikode inaugurated the conference bylighting the lamp. Prof. Chatterjee released the ITSM 2011proceedings by presenting a copy of the same to Prof.Ramayya Krishnan. Prof. Ramayya is the Dean of CarnegieMellon Heinz College and William W and Ruth F CooperProfessor of Management Science and InformationSystems. He addressed the gathering and wished the ITSMconference a great success. Prof. Saji Gopinath (Dean,IIMK) welcomed all the dignitaries on board andhighlighted the role of Information Technology in themodern era. Prof. M.P. Sebastian (Chair - IT & SystemsArea at IIM Kozhikode and also the Program Chair forITSM 2011) proposed the vote of Thanks. He thanked theorganizing team for their whole hearted support in makingITSM a grand success. The inaugural session was followedby a keynote address by Prof. Ramayya Krishnan on“Societal Scale Adoption of Information Technology:Research Opportunities and Policy Challenges”. He laidemphasis on how Information and CommunicationTechnology can be leveraged for economic developmentwith special focus on developing countries.

There were two tracks for ITSM 2011: Research Trackand Industry Practitioners’ Forum.

Research Track:

ITSM 2011 received a total of 189 research submissions

from India, USA,Canada, UK, Finland,Australia, NewZealand, Iran andMyanmar, of which 40were finally selectedafter a rigorous reviewfor oral presentation(with an acceptance rate of 21%). The papers werescheduled in 8 sessions. The session chairs included Prof.S. Raghunathan (University of Texas,Dallas), Prof. ArvindTripathi (University of Auckland), Prof Varghese S Jacob(University of Texas,Dallas), Prof Indushobha Chengalur-Smith (State University of New York, Albany), Prof LDivakaran (Carnegie Mellon University), Prof. RemaPadman (Carnegie Mellon University), Prof. Sarah Rice(University of Connecticut), and Prof. Ravi Bapna(University of Minnesota/ISB), in addition to the Professorsof IIMK. There was a research panel discussion on 18th

December on “Publishing in top IS journals”. Prof.Prabuddha De (Accenture Professor, Krannert School ofManagement, Purdue University) was the moderator. Prof.Sridhar Narasimhan (Senior Associate Dean, College ofManagement, Georgia Tech), Prof. Sumit Sarkar (AshbelSmith Professor, University of Texas at Dallas) and Prof.Arun Sundararajan (Associate Professor, Stern School ofBusiness, New York University) were the panel members.It was a very lively session.

Industry Practitioners’ Forum (IPF) Track:

The IPF was on 17th December. The theme of the IPF wason “Information Technology and Business Innovations”.There were 12 papers, presented in 3 sessions, from leadingIT industries including TCS, Infosys, Robert Bosch, VisualIQ, Wipro, Nokia-Siemens, and Brocade Communications.The session chairs included Prof Sunil Wattal (Fox Schoolof Business, Philadelphia), Prof Ravi Seethamraju(University of Sydney, Australia), and G Subramanian (TataConsultancy Services), in addition to the Professors fromIIMK. The proceedings of the IPF is published byMacmillan Publishers (edited by Joffi Thomas, M PSebastian and Asharaf S) in their Advanced ResearchSeries. The Proceedings was released by Prof RamayyaKrishnan by presenting a copy to Prof Nirup Menon(George Mason University).

The conference concluded on the evening of 18 Dec 2011on a high note. The ITSM 2012 will be held at IndianSchool of Business, Hyderabad.

Extraordinary Performance from MDP office

Months of October – November 2011 were perhaps themost hectic in the history of MDP office at IIM Kozhikode.

In these two months, as many as 20 managementdevelopment programs were conducted successfully.These 20 programs totalled more than 2000 participantdays, there were programs as long as 12 days, someprograms were on-campus and some off-campus and theprograms featured one CEO level, several senior executivelevel offerings.

Despite current constraints of limited traininginfrastructure, MDP office worked with their meticulousplanning and flawless coordination and balancing theresources. All staff members working at MDP office wererecognized for their contribution by the director.

IIMK has conducted a thought leadership workshop forselect Vice Chancellors of the country during November23-25, 2011. This three day workshop focusing on“Leadership in Higher Education Institutions” wasconducted in association with Commonwealth OfLearning, Canada at the Institute campus. The programwas conceptualised and designed by Prof. DebashisChatterjee, Director-IIMK.

The program started with the first session on “Discoverthe Leadership DNA” by Prof. Debashis Chatterjee andcontinued with a topic on “Development Issues in IndianUniversities” and “Developing World Class Universities:Perspectives and Challenges” by Prof. Saji Gopinath, on

the first day. The second day started by a session on“Change Management” by Prof Unnikrishnan Nair, seniormost faculty member of IIM Kozhikode and ended with asession on “System wide Issues that hamper growth andQuality in Universities” by another senior faculty member,Prof Krishna Ladha. The third day was started by ProfDebashis Chatterjee on “The culture of Emotions” and theprogram was concluded by Prof Saji Gopinath on a topic“Developing an Agenda for Excellence”.

Prof Madhulika Kaushik, of Commonwealth Of Learning(COL) was also present throughout the program and briefedabout the objectives of the program and also about theassociation of COL and IIMK. The efforts of IIMKozhikode and COL were highly appreciated by the ViceChancellors who attended the program and hasrecommended that these kind of programs should beconducted in future for the addressing the challenges ofIndian Universities.

On Firstsource Leaders’ Programme - ExpandingBusiness Perspectives (November 23-25, 2011)

Programme Facilitator: Prof. Rajesh S. Upadhyayula

Expanding Business Perspectives, a programme for theparticipants of First Source was conducted at Indian Instituteof Management, Kozhikode between November 22nd, 2011and November 25th, 2011. First Source approached IndianInstitute of Management Kozhikode to conduct a trainingprogramme for their high performance individuals to enabletheir transition to cross-functional roles from their functionalresponsibilities. The participants were having experience ofmore than 10 to 15 years experience within the industry.Accordingly, a focused capsule was designed to exposeparticipants to a breadth of topics such as economicenvironment affecting BPO firms, strategic analysis,positioning and competitor analysis of BPO firms, alignmentand balanced scorecard, organization structure, design andchange for firms operating in dynamic environments,operational effectiveness and service marketingorientation.

The involvement of both the MDP office personnel as wellas the LMD (Leadership and Management Developmentteam) helped in building sufficient excitement for theprogramme within First Source. Among the 60 nominationsreceived for the programme, 25 individuals were nominatedfor the first programme at the IIMK Campus. The “back to

campus” programme had a stimulating as well as invigoratingeffect on the participants of first source. Faculty involved inthe programme has thoroughly enjoyed their sessions withthe participants.“Good mixture of subject, in depth knowledge of theprofessors of the subject and the best environment to learn”

MDP on Leadership for senior executives of IndianOrdinance Factory Board (IOFS) (November 21-26)

Programme Facilitator: Prof. Saji Gopinath

IIMK Conducted a Management Leadership Programme(MLP) for the senior executives of Indian ordinance factoryBoard (IOFS) during November 21-26 at TAJ GatewayCalicut. This 6 day Management Leadership Programme(MLP) on Operational Excellence specifically addressedthe requirements of the Additional General Managers ofIOFS with over 25 years of experience in the industry,having the key role of leading expansion projects in thefactories in addition to being part of the top management(along with general managers) in managing the factories.The programme had a Operational leadership focus andwas designed to enhance the functional managementleadership abilities of the executives while providing astrategic orientation to take up the challenges of thechanging nature of business. 21 Senior Executives fromdifferent factories of IOFS attended the programme whichwas inaugurated by Prof. Debashis Chatterjee.

As the theory goes, there is adifference between an organizationand an institution and ever since itsinception, IIMK has taken severalvaliant steps to move towardsbecoming an institution that others canfollow. With a thirst to bring in newinnovations in study techniques andpedagogy for learning, IIMKincorporated the ‘ManagerialPerspective’ course for the students of15th batch of its flagship Post GraduateProgramme (PGP15). This involvedgreat participation on behalf of thefaculty and the students and anenormous amount of effort on part ofthe administrative staff to facilitate thishighly versatile and fruitfulopportunity for the students to learnand appreciate management studies ina new way with a new ‘perspective’

The course was conducted over a spanof six days which involved severalonline simulations along with guestlectures and movie screenings with thepurpose of enlightening IIMK studentson various aspects of management andcorporate decision-makingcapabilities. The course kicked offwith several simulations from thehouse of Harvard Business SchoolOnline Learning, which honed theinterdisciplinary analytical skills andthe decision-making capabilities of theparticipating students. The simulationsincluded a Marketing scenario wherestudents worked upon a case to comeup with profit-maximizing plans forthe firm presented in the case. Anothersimulation directed towards ‘climbingthe Mt. Everest’ was also presented to

the students, where they were requiredto make intellectually challengingdecisions to demonstrate team workand group dynamics. The MicroEconomics simulation saw participantsemploying the ‘Demand and Supply’theories to understand the practicalityof these theories they learnt in theclassrooms. The simulations alsoincluded a very dynamically designedOperations Management case wherestudents actually put to practice theprinciples of process management tocome up with an efficient operationdesign under various scenarios. Eachsimulation was followed by a thoroughfeedback from faculty and involvedhighly concentrated and active classdiscussions on every aspect of thedecision made by the students and theunderlying analytics.

Apart from the simulation sessions, thecourse also involved movie screeningsand guest lectures. The students got achance to witness a short documentaryon the fundamental problems of ourcountry like poverty. They were givenan opportunity to appreciate the movie‘Manthan’ from a managerialperspective to understand the workingsof co-operative societies and reckonhow Amul, one of the leading dairybrands of the country can be within thevision of students. Eminent speakersfrom across the country came down tothe institute to address the students onvarious aspects of management andbusiness administration. Mr SatishPradhan, Chief, Group of HumanResources, Tata Sons spoke about thefundamental aspects of management

and Mr. Ramesh J. Thomas and Mr.Nappina Sampath of EquitorConsulting who shared their insightson what management is and theirperspective of how ‘institutions’ likethe IIMs in our country make Indiamove forward towards a moreprofitable and sustainable future.

Over the course of six days, thestudents got a chance to learn andprobably understand in a much betterand more sustainable manner, theaspects of management that areotherwise theoretically taught in theclassroom lectures. The participationand enthusiasm from the faculty, staffand students was commendable,making this endeavor a grand successand laying the foundation to make thiscourse a part of curriculum for thefuture batches of PGP at IIMK. Byincorporating this course, IIM-K hasbecome the first management institutein the country to experiment with sucha new and beneficial initiative.

The much awaited annual managementfest of IIMK - ‘Backwaters’ kicked offon 18th November setting a number ofrecords and precedents in its sway. Itwas the first ever 72 hours fest havinga delectable mix of intelligence,precision, accuracy, leadership,innovation on one hand with creativityand spontaneity on the other. Close to35 events were held in various formats(formal, informal and workshops)attracting and honing talents of nearly6000 students from around 65 premierinstitutions competing for prize moneyworth nearly Rs. 10 lacs.

The major highlights of Backwaters2011 were Chennai Super Kings‘Whistle Podu’, ’Srijan’, ITC Avatarand NABARD sponsored ‘RuralNirmaan’. The much-acclaimed‘Whistle Podu’ sponsored by IPLcricket team Chennai Super Kingsbrought out possible options formaking the team an internationallyreckoned brand. It was for the first timethat an IPL teams headed to a B-schoollooking for ideas to promote theirbrand. Rural Nirmaan provided aninterface to NABARD for bringing upinnovative ideas to improve theproductivity in agriculture credit sector.ITC Avatar which was an invitationonly event involved a search for aleader who could withstand this battleamongst geniuses, ward off challengesand stand tall amongst luminaries.

The flagship event White Knightprovided the ultimate platform for the

ideation and commercialization of thatone big idea that has the potential totransform lives around us. The eventlooked for a team that can make adifference, thinks beyond the obviousand comes up with sustainablesolutions. Overwhelming participationwas seen in this year’s “White Knight”drawing nearly 200 teams which wasan indicator of the mass appeal and ofthe fact that over the years, Backwaters

Marketing Events: Grappling withthe issues of dwindling markets andunpredictable demands in their bid toincrease their market share and theshare of the mind space, marketingevents like ‘Rural Roulette’ and‘Serve-Wise’ focused on demands ofmodern day marketing with onlinemedia campaigning for a social cause.

HR: Finding the best talent, motivatinga huge workforce and retaining it in a

largely competitive market havebecome the greatest HR challenges ofthe day. With the focus on nurturingtalent and maximizing human capital,‘BootKamp’ continued to remain oneof the most sought after HR events withIIMK being one of the few B-Schoolsto persist with and successfully executean event in the Human Resourcesfunction.

Operations Events: Operationalefficiency is today’s mantra asenterprises endeavour to streamlinetheir processes in order to cut costs andhence possess the might to be morevisible at the marketplace. This year’s‘Optimus’ and ‘SimulatriX’ involved

an online route planning event for alogistics organization in the form of asimulation with emphasis on Greensupply chain.

Strategy: “Strategy without tactics isthe slowest route to victory. Tacticswithout strategy is the noise beforedefeat.” The strategy events like The‘Un’common Wealth and ‘Beat theMarket’ assessed the ability ofparticipants to innovate and transformshort term operational gains into longterm sustainable profitability andinvolved real time strategy simulationgame as well as an innovationchallenge contest which hadparticipants coming up with a strategyin order to develop the next big concept

Systems: From small start-ups to megamarket players, information systemshave carved their niche in all sectors.Recent times have seen themushrooming of vendors and softwaredevelopers as well as the evolution ofbetter adept Supply ChainManagement, Enterprise ResourcePlanning, and Customer RelationshipManagement Systems. This year’s

‘Battle for IT’ was in the form of asimulation game testing ProjectManagement skills.

Aligned to thetheme of sustainability, TeamBackwaters launched used papercollection drive: “Kora-Kagaz”.Knowing that the scope of reusing suchused paper was immense within thecampus, used A-4 sized paperswith one blank side werecollected from students and faculty forone entire week. It was then boundedin the form of notepads. Thesenotepads were then sent across tounderprivileged school-going studentsin Calicut. They were also used to meetall the paper requirements by TeamBackwaters during the festival. Thisweek-long initiative was successful increating awareness regarding the huge

amount of used paper generated inIIMK. ‘Kora-Kagaz’ was the first steptowards a pioneering student-initiativein IIMK’s history.

In line with the theme, TeamBackwaters also launched the ‘MakeA Difference’ initiative. The keyobjective was to help create awarenessof Energy Efficiency at an early age,giving learners the knowledge andskills to manage electricity use wisely.This will reduce household electricitycosts, save electricity and reduceenvironmental impact. The awarenessand education campaign was led byonline publicity and stickers were putup on the doors of students’ hostelrooms.

PRO NIGHTS AND WORKSHOP

Some other main attractions atBackwaters ’11 included a workshopon International Capital Markets. Theworkshop was conducted by Mr.Jaroslaw Stefanski, InternationalBusiness Development Manager, XTrade Brokers, Europe’s leadingbrokerage house. It saw hugeparticipation from the students. Otherhighlights included the pro-nites whichattracted a huge crowd. Backwaters’11kicked off the first of its series of pro-nites with Nitin Gupta ofEntertainment Engineers who returned

to IIM Kozhikode with a full-fledgedstand-up comedy act. It was followedby Hand Shadowgraphy and Sand ArtShow the next day. It was presentedby Mr. Amar Sen, one of the only twopracticing professionals in the field ofHand Shadowgraphy in the whole ofAsia. Mr. Sen has also featured in‘India’s Got Talent’ and was one of thefew performing artists all over theworld to be invited to perform inWolfsburg on the occasion of their 10thanniversary of their renowned automuseum.

For the first time in IIM Kozhikode, aunique ‘Great Debate’ moderated byMr. Ashutosh Sinha from NDTV Profitwas conducted. The debate saw sparksflying in the war of words amongstMr. Vijay Sankaran, Head, SocialMedia, Nokia Siemens, Mr. HarshilKaria, Founder, Foxymoron and a

proponent of social media and Mr. JosyPaul, renowned ad-man and Chairman,BBDO, India. Enlightenment andentertainment was served at its best asthey we debated whether social mediamarketing is going to leave behind allother forms of marketing going into thefuture.

Backwaters’11 ended successfullywith a first-of-its kind CorporateDinner which served as an opportunityfor business personalities in the regionto interact and network with the IIMKozhikode community. The CorporateDinner provided an opportunity tothese industry bigwigs to share theirexperiences and leverage the humancapital and knowledge base of IIMKozhikode to generate more value fortheir businesses while also providingthe IIMK community with insights intorunning successful businesses.

Horizons 2011– Annual Management Conclave

Indian Institute of Management Kozhikode (IIMK) held its flagship conclave, ‘Horizons 2011’from 18th – 20th of November 2011. The three-day event aimed to reflect the realities of the“Triple Bottom Line - People, Planet, Profit” bringing in perspectives from industry leaders,social innovators and change agents. The event was inaugurated by Prof. Anandakuttan B Unnithan,PGP Chairperson and other distinguished speakers present at the event.

Mr. Hasit Joshipura, Vice President South Asia, MD India of GSK Pharma Ltd, the first speakerat the conclave, believed that triple bottom line should come out of research papers and seep intomobilization. He spoke about the unique nature of the pharmaceutical industry in relation to thetriple bottom line concept. While emphasizing the need for profits in a going concern, he statedthat a sustainable model could never be built in the absence of a broader view that includedpeople and the planet. The idea of the triple bottom line has largely remained in the researchjournals so far and should start becoming standard practice. He referred to companies fallingvictim to what he called ‘the tyranny of quarters’ and short-term benefits. He emphasized that the‘social contract needs to be fulfilled’ and companies should care for the social stakeholders too.

Speaking on innovative marketing, Mr. Suman Srivastava, Founder, Marketing Unplugged, opinedthat marketing as a subject still clings to outdated frameworks and models found in textbooks anddeveloped for a different period. He spoke about the increasing trend towards individualcustomization and the need for marketing to be ahead of the trend in order for firms to survive. Healso mentioned the great power of the internet in disseminating information and its uses in theexercise.

Mr. Ashutosh Sinha, News Editor, NDTV Profit, focused on the responsibilities of the media inensuring that a broader mandate is carried out by all segments of the industry and the governmentin order to secure the prosperity of people and the future of the planet and the importance ofcredibility in news delivery. He consistently emphasized the failings of all entities that had chosento treat people and profit on unequal terms because profit eventually comes from a long termassociation with people. He also spoke about the crucial importance of credibility in news delivery.

Day2 of Horizons saw invaluable ideas shared by three illustrious speakers.

Mr. Anshu Gupta, Social Innovator and Founder of NGO ‘Goonj’ (NGO of the year 2007), in amoving presentation impressed upon the audience our extraordinary disconnect with rural andsemi-urban India. He shared his experiences about building the unique organization that he is apart of and elaborated on its mission, purpose and his personal commitment to the same.

Mr. Anand Kurian, Founder & Director, Emphasis stressed upon the success of companies thatchose to focus on the passion of their employees and quality of their product rather than focusingon the creation of profits. Modeling most of his talk on aspects of successful companies thatadopted this strategy, he drew analogies and inferences from numerous philosophical sources tomake his point. He also emphasized on the concept of ‘Reality Plus’. He eloquently conveyed hisconceptions of reality and what we need to learn beyond it.

Dr. P.Namperumalsamy, Founding Member of Aravind Eye Care System, centred his talk onAravind Eye Care’s much lauded sustainable eye care model for the masses. In emphasizing thesame, he drew numerous and highly relevant parallels to the flagship theme of ‘People, Planetand Profit’. He quoted examples from his organization where since its inception, methods wereincorporated which focused on People’s benefit at large without due concern to Profits which

according to him will come in due course of time. Aravind Eye Care’s commitment has allowedit to adopt a unique cross subsidy model that even permits access to the poorest and the mostremote areas of the country through mobile eye care centres. This model has gained such credibilitythat it has been discussed in the hallowed portals of management such as the Harvard BusinessSchool.

The concluding day saw Mr. Sivaramakrishnan Ramachandra, Managing Partner, LittlerAssociates, India who spoke about the success and increased employee engagement of companiesthat focus on passionate objectives beyond profit. He opined that in reality, there need not be atradeoff between satisfying the various stakeholders of business. He also engaged the audiencewith stories of his personal experiences and the manner in which they have altered his view ofbusiness and the manner in which corporations conduct themselves.

Mr. Ravi Duvvuru, Head of Regulatory Compliance, India & South Asia, Standard CharteredBank, emphasized Standard Chartered’s culture and value systems and its inherent synchronicitywith the triple bottom line concept. He elaborated on the numerous corporate social responsibilityinitiatives taken by his company and the impact they were having. In his talk, he also laid stresson the need for banks to engage with the real economy rather than focus on synthetic instruments.

Mr. Chandrashekar Hariharan, Head, Biodiversity Conservation India Limited (BCIL) spoke on‘Buildings: Business as usual and low carbon scenario’. He talked about the vital importance ofintegrating conservation issues with the existing development agenda. He also put forth “ThePhysics of Building: the How’s before the Why’s” concept which forced the audience to introspecton issues which otherwise go unnoticed by general public.

Mr. Anirban Dhar ‘Onir’, Movie Director of ‘Bas Ek Pal’ and ‘My Brother Nikhil’ enthralled theaudience with engaging tidbits from his varied and colorful career. Later in the evening, hiscritically acclaimed movie ‘I am’ was screened which the director watched along with the youngaudience on whom the movie left an indelible mark.

The event concluded with a vote of thanks from Prof. K. Unnikrishnan Nair who brought out therelevance of theme ‘People, Planet, Profit’ in today’s scenario and how we can inculcate theunique knowledge shared by all speakers in our daily life. He applauded Horizons OrganizingTeam for bringing out the best and gave some valuable suggestions.

Shanmugam Manjunath, an IIM-Lucknow graduate was a marketing manager(grade A officer) for the Indian Oil Corporation and was murdered for sealinga corrupt petrol station in U.P. The incident has since led to a stir amongst thestudents’ community of IITs and IIMs.

The students at IIM-K endeavor to imbibe values and virtues along withknowledge and learnings. Taking inspiration from the event of Manjunath’sdeath, IIM-K conducted a candle light march to pay respect and depict pridefor the man. The march was conducted on the eve of 19th November (the dayManjunath conducted the raid). It started from underneath the campusauditorium and went all the way up to the main steps (Harvard Steps) of theinstitute covering the entire academic block and the front of the hostels.

The march spread awareness amongst the students as well as the notion ofpaying our respect to people who stand up against the wrongs in the world.The occasion was highly appreciated by everyone who attended the event.

On 2nd November,2011, the campusplayed host to Mr.Prashanth Ajjampur,Director, TechnologyStrategy Architecture(TSA), Deloitte

Consulting (US). He was visiting thecampus in order to open a new role forthe final recruitments – TSA.Currently, Deloitte recruits for itsStrategy and Operations role in IIMKozhikode.

“Deloitte” is the brand under whichtens of thousands of dedicatedprofessionals in independent firmsthroughout the world collaborate toprovide audit, consulting, financialadvisory, risk management, and taxservices to selected clients.

Before joining Deloitte, Mr. Prashanthwas the Vice President of EnterpriseArchitecture for The Hartford Propertyand Casualty Company. He has over17 years experience in the IT industry.Prior to working at The Hartford,Prashanth worked at KPMGConsulting in their public sectorpractice. Prashanth has an MBAin Finance and InternationalBusiness.

Addressing the students of IIMK, Mr.Prashanth talked about the significanceof the new role on offer and the jobdescription for the students. He alsotalked about the expectations from thestudents for the role offered and otheraspects of the work-life at Deloitte.

Healso predicted that India and Chinawould begin to emerge as Superpowersof the world and would grow at anenormous pace. As he moved towardsthe end of the discussion, he cautionedthe students against losing their basicvalues and morals. HUL is India’s largest Fast MovingConsumer Goods Company coveringa wide range of products in thesegments of Home and Personal Care,Food Products and Beverages. Mr.Bakshi has been a part HUL since 1989and has worked in various sales andmarketing assignments spanningacross Personal Products and HomeCare categories of HUL. He also didkey stints as Business Manager,leading one of the new ventures in2000 and later as Regional Manager –South in 2002. He was appointed asRegional Brand Vice President (FALand Lifebuoy), South Asia, forUnilever in January 2005. In May2006, he was appointed as RegionalCategory Vice President for Skin,South Asia, Unilever. He is currentlythe Executive Director of the Sales &Customer Development. He passed outfrom IIT, Bombay, in ChemicalEngineering in 1986 and has done hisPGDM from IIM Ahmedabad. Mr.Bakshi was an integral part of HUL’srural health programme, LifebuoySwasthya Chetana. The programmeendeavoured to induce adoption ofhygienic practices among rural Indiansand aimed to bring down the incidenceof diarrhea. So far, it has reached 120million people in over 50,000 villages.

The session saw a vibrant discussionwith a multitude of questions beingasked by the students to Mr. Bakshi ashe spoke of the various changes thatIndia would see by 2020. The speechinspired students to think about variousaspects that they had previouslyconsidered trivial. It was a dynamicsession that saw a lot of activeparticipation from students as well asthe speaker.

Mahindra War Room 2011:

Mahindra War Room 2011 was theundisputed mega-event of October forIIM Kozhikode. Each year, as India’scream of the crop in Business Talentjoins the Top 17 Business schools, theylook forward to one thing - taking ashot at The War Room. No single eventhas evoked greater passion and love asThe War Room – a strategy contest thatis India’s #1 Business School Eventsince 2008 fall.

The War Room was inspired by theStrategy War Room practice institutedby Mr. Anand Mahindra that enabledthe transformation of the MahindraGroup in the 1990s and the 2000s intoa globally diversified federation ofcompanies. While creating the event,Broadvision’s founder Mr. SriramChandrasekaran chose The War Roomand presented it as a strategy-makinggame for the students, based on issuesoutlined by the Group Executive Boardof the Mahindra Group. Today, theevent stands out among the plethora ofthings to do for students in the IIMsand other leading business schools ofIndia, as the thing to do. In the process,the Mahindra brand has registered animprovement in brand position from 67to 12 over the last 4 years of the rollout of The War Room.

IIMK campus played hosts to twodistinguished members of the Officeof Strategy Management, MahindraGroup, Mumbai for the much-awaitedMahindra War Room Campus Round.A total of 21 teams and 84 studentstoiled day and night devising strategiesto address the issues given to them in

the sector-based caselets. Of these, 7teams were shortlisted to presentbefore the Jury that had flown downfrom Mumbai. The teams were judgedon various parameters such asinnovation and feasibility. Two teamswere declared as Campus Championsand Campus Runners-Up for the event.The Champions from IIM Kozhikode– “The Zamorins” – SidharthRamachandran, Ayushi Agarwal,Kripalsinh Rana and Soumya Bhatia –were invited to Mahindra’s MumbaiHQ for the final event from 18th-20th

November, 2011. The Finale involvedthe team presenting their strategicsolution for the Automotive Sectorcaselet to the Group Executive Boardof Mahindra Group and to Mr. AnandMahindra, Vice Chairman andManaging Director, Mahindra andMahindra. The Finale was also airedon CNBC18.

HUL and CNBC-TV18 presented the third season of Lessons InMarketing Excellence (LIME), an inter - business schoolmarketing and business challenge that gives an opportunity to theparticipating students from select institutes to stretch theirimagination and write the future. The two shortlisted teams fromIIMK for the campus round of HUL LIME 3 were Lemon T(h)ree(Ashok Prasad, Saumya Rathor and Arjun Rao) and LemonLightning (Ankita Mukherjee, Deepika Negi and Sonal Das). Thetask at hand for IIMK students was to chalk out a marketingsolution for Goonj, a Delhi-based NGO present in 21 states of

India and engaged in sustainable rural development, ruralelementary education, women empowerment and hygienebesides addressing the clothing requirements of disadvantagedsections in far flung and inaccessible rural areas. On October6th, both the teams presented their recommendations before thedistinguished jury comprising of Mr. Samardeep Subandh,General Manager - South at HUL and Mr. Anshu Gupta,renowned journalist and Founder-Director of Goonj. TeamLemon T(h)ree did IIMK proud by reaching the semi-finalswhere 15 teams from prestigious B schools across India willfight it out for the finals.

FLIP National Challenge 2011FLIP conducted it’s now famous FLIP challenge onSeptember 11-12, 2011 at IIM Kozhikode. This year saw79 IIMK students taking part in the certification exam withstudents opting for verticals like Corporate Banking, Finance& Banking Fundamentals, Trade Finance and Treasury andCapital Markets. The FLIP Challenge rewards the topperformers in each of these categories with a Pre-placementInterview with eminent banks in India like ICICI Bank, YESBank and HDFC Bank.

JPMC Deal“The Deal” is the flagship Investment banking competitionof J.P. Morgan Chase which is conducted annually acrossleading B-schools of the country. This year’s competitionkick started in July and after 3 phases of evaluation, itculminated with the Finals in November at J.P. MorganChase’s Powai office in Mumbai. Team Finosaur from IIMK,comprising of Vinay Prabhu, Vishal Shitut and ImtiazuddinAhmed from PGP14 excelled in all phases of thiscompetition. They were selected as one of top 5 “Campuschampions” teams from over 150 teams that participated inthe competition. Vinay and Vishal went on to represent IIMKat the finals in Mumbai. They presented before the esteemedpanel of senior bankers of J.P.Morgan Chase, including Mr.Rohit Chatterji (MD & Head-Investment Banking, India),Mr. Madhav Kalyan (MD and CEO, India), Mr. MaheshAras (CAO, India) and Mr. Hariharan Raman (ED,Investment Banking). The team received accolades fromMr. Chatterji for their depth of analysis and walked awaywith prize money of Rs. 50,000.

Advertising workshop by LoweLintasThis year’s Onam celebration was special for IIMK withMr. S. Subramanyeswar, National Planning Director ofLowe Lintas present on campus on 8th September. Theoccasion was an Advertising Workshop organized bymPower, the marketing interest group of IIMK. Mr.Subramanyeswar took the marketing enthusiasts on ajourney of a “not-by-the-book” framework of branding. Ina never-before-experienced Gyaan session, he emphasizedon the use of all five senses (audio, visual, smell, touch &taste) in branding. And interestingly, the subject on whichparticipants had to work was none other than “IIMKozhikode”. Students suggested novel ways of brandingIIM Kozhikode using multiple sensory experiences

including the touch of mist & clouds and the fresh smellof soil after first rain. All in all, it was alearning which was surely useful for future marketers atIIMK.

Unilever UnpluggedOn October 27th, IIMK played host to HUL for UnileverUnplugged, a one-of-a-kind integrated brandcommunication workshop that was conducted by HULBrand Managers, to give IIMK participants a peek intowhat really goes behind the successful brands and a chanceto brainstorm and discuss with the experts, and be a realmarketer for a day. The HUL team took the IIMK studentsthrough the complete process of applying marketingstrategies (consumer behavior, positioning, integratedbrand communication) to the development of the phasewise product campaign.

IIMK was accorded an honor, when yetanother luminous personality, Prof.Chinmoy Ghosh, the Gladstein Professorof Business and Innovation at the Schoolof Business, University of Connecticut,visited the campus on October 17th togive a seminar on the topic, “Does Cross-listing Mitigate Agency Problems of

Excess Cash? Evidence from International Acquisitions.”The session was organized by the Research, Conference& Publications wing of IIMK.

Professor Chinmoy Ghosh also heads the Department ofFinance and is an Ackerman Scholar of the School ofBusiness. He has been involved in over a dozen PhDdissertations as major or associate advisor. Mr. V R Ferose, Managing Director of SAP Labs (India)

On 5th September, Mr. V R Ferose,Managing Director, SAP Labs (India)visited IIM Kozhikode to talk about“Leadership in today’s context”. Mr.Ferose oversees the R&D operations atSAP Labs, across Bangalore and Gurgaoncentres. He has been a part of the SAPfamily since August 1999. At age 36, he

can proudly be seen as one of the youngest ManagingDirector of Global MNC in India. He is also a member ofthe Development Advisory Board of HOPE Worldwide(India) and is in an advisory role to the Trust in matters ofbranding and developing its fund-raising mechanism. He isa regular speaker at B-Schools and national events organizedby NASSCOM. Mr. Ferose’s talk clearly showed the 12 yearsof industry experience he has had. He gave a highly inspiringlecture about the way leadership can be handled in today’sscenario by citing examples from his own life. He talkedabout the various issues that he faced as the MD of SAPLabs over the past 18 months and how he transformed theorganizational environment into a highly efficient andproactive workplace. CEREBRO was the National Case Study Challengeorganized in association with Cognizant BusinessConsulting under Delphique 2011, the NationalManagement Convention of MDI. This competition wasdesigned to give students real life problems and cases ofCompanies and test them on their strategic and operationalthinking abilities. This challenge was taken by top 30BSchools of India to give innovative and feasible solutionsto Cognizant on their business case. After initial entrysubmission, the solutions were viewed by the company ondifferent parameters and top 5-6 teams were called tocampus for making final presentation to the Eminent Panelfrom the Company.

Nissan Student Brand ManagerOn June 7, 2011, Nissan Motor IndiaPvt.Ltd. (NMIPL) launched the ‘NissanStudent Brand Manager’ (NSBM)Program 2011, a unique initiative topromote its brand in India. This was thesecond year of the initiative and thisprogram invited applications from 150colleges spanning across 15 cities inIndia. The company targeted 1,200entries for appointing 20 NSBM’s and

the tenure of the program was for a period of six monthsstarting from July to Dec’2011. The 20-selected StudentBrand Managers played a key role in bringing brand Nissancloser to both - the student community and the public ingeneral through innovative marketing initiatives. Afterundergoing training, the students worked closely withcompany officials on a variety of initiatives to create buzzabout brand Nissan among the student community.

IIMB Vista Numero UnoNumero Uno (The Hunt for the Next CEO…) was theflagship event of Vista 2011, the premier business festivalof Indian Institute of Management, Bangalore. The event’s

hunt for the future business leaderwitnessed 15 titans fight for theprestigious title of the “Numero Uno”where participants were tested in a rangeof events from the nitty-gritties of angrybirds and honeycomb mazes to thechallenges of game theory.

IIMB TAS ExcelsiorTAS Excelsior was the flagship event ofVista 2011, the premier business festivalof Indian Institute of Management,Bangalore. The event challenged theparticipants to overcome all limits tocreate a firm by buying and retaining thebest managers over rounds of marketnegotiations.

SSG with its mission statement ofmaking a difference to the society hasbeen functional in providingmanagerial, financial as well asorganizational assistance to variousself help groups and grassrootscommunity initiatives and organizingnumerous activities at Kozhikode inorder to empower developmentalinitiatives in the city as well asstrengthen the network of sociallyresponsible individuals and corporatein the society.

Panorama“Enlightening young minds”- IIMKozhikode on 24th September, 2011witnessed the light of the day withcackles of over120 fifteen-yearolds. The audience comprised

of 10thstandard students fromgovernment schools in Kozhikode. TheSSG mission for “Panorama: a seriesof career counseling workshops” isthreefold:

- to motivate the students to pursuehigher studies for a dream career

- to expose them to a variety ofavailable career options

- to provide guidance about topcolleges for various fieldsin the country and their applicationprocedures

The daylong itinerary covered sessionsencompassing a gamut of occupationaloptions, as well as motivationalsessions on leaders, opinion building,spoken English, competitive examsand competitive exams. Theseinteractional sessions were followed by

an enthusiastic mentorshipsession in which variousPGP 14 as well as PGP 15volunteers mentoredsmaller groups of studentsaddressing each and everyquestion of the studentsindividually. The studentswere also provided

handouts containing information aboutthe colleges and their admissionprocedures in various fields of highereducation. SSG endeavors to use thedatabase of the schools attending theseworkshops to build a network amongstthe people in the field of education sothat in future, in the long run, thisnetwork would help the communityreach out to each other and giveguidance to the upcoming students ofthe state. The feedback forms filled bystudents, teachers and volunteers ofKoyilandy Palliative Care rated thesessions as excellent. A secondworkshop was held on the 12th ofNovember for over 240 students. SSGendeavors to conduct ‘Panorama’events with similar interactive sessionson a regular basis to reach out to morestudents across Kerala.

PrayasEmpowering the Mess Workers -After Expressions 2011, an SSG eventfor the support staff at IIMK organizedin the month of August 2011 showingthem ‘Yes, We care’, the mess workers’classes started in the third week ofSeptember 2011. ‘Prayas’ wasconceptualized by SSG with thepurpose of teaching spoken English tothe mess staff on campus. Anotherobjective of the class is to improve theemployability conditions of theworkers for better paying jobs andlocations of their choice.

Groups of student volunteers wereassigned respective mess workers. Anindicative syllabus sheet suggesting thetopics to be covered was provided tothe volunteers. To further enhance thequality of classes SSG organized ameeting of the volunteers in the monthof October, which was addressed byDr.Anupam Das, Faculty, Humanities& Liberal Arts in Management, oncampus who guided the volunteers oneffective teaching methods, includingword building through syllable splittingand other coaching videos. ‘Prayas’currently covers about 25 mess workerswho are being taught thrice every week

by a dedicated team of over 40volunteers.

Apart from these classes, SSG has alsotaken up the responsibility of helpingopen individual bank accounts for eachand every worker in both the messesat IIMK so as to facilitate the processof the salary receipts and withdrawalsthrough proper and accountablechannels. These initiatives by SSG aimto better the quality of life of the messworkers by empowering them throughthe right skill sets, information andresources available.

Aarogya 2011“Say yes to health, Say yes to help!”- Aarogya is a health initiative by SSGfor the IIM-K fraternity – students,faculty and support staff held annually.This year it was held on 1st October2011. The program which was heldfrom 9:30am to 4:30pm in theauditorium witnessed over 200members on campus benefitting fromthe drive.

The objective of the program was topromote a healthy IIM-K communityby providing the convenient option oftaking medical tests within campus,given the hectic schedule and lifestyleof the fraternity. SSG had partneredwith Government accreditedinstitutions for the program, includingVasan Eye Care for the eye check-upsand Aswini Diagnostics Centre, whichconducted all other tests. Both weremade available at discounted rates forthe benefit of the IIMK fraternity. It

was also meant to provide free medicalcheck-ups for 112 support staff bysubsidizing their medical check-upsfrom the margin of tests taken by thestudents and faculty.

In continuation, SSG also held a blooddonation camp on the campus on 22October 2011. The camp was held inassociation with Calicut MedicalCollege Blood Bank. The enthusiasmof the students and faculty forparticipation the blood donation campwas immense and worth a hugeapplause.

Collaboration with Centre forResearch and Education for SocialTransformation (CREST) - Themission of CREST to help themarginalized and the underprivilegedachieve excellence in all spheres ofhuman endeavor through education,which is in tune with the mission of

SSG bringstogether both theinstitutions. SSGcollaborates withCREST at variouslevels in order tohelp CRESTrealize its vision ofenabling theunderprivilegedstudents gain arespectable anddeserving place inthe society.

On 27th September, 2011, the firstdaylong on-campus initiative of thisacademic year for CREST wasorganized which was attended by 38students. Session on Leadership byPGP student Arjun Mohan wasfollowed by another very interactivesession on communications by Prof.Anupam Das. Moreover, eachparticipant’s resume was individuallyevaluated and modified in one session.The participants also got theopportunity to interact with thestudents of IIMK on a personal levelin order to get their queries on variousjob prospects solved. The workshopalso consisted of ice breaking and teambuilding sessions in order to help theCREST students communicateeffectively. The participants were alsotrained on communication and problemsolving skills through GroupDiscussion sessions.

SSG members frequently visit theCREST centre for one-to-one sessionswith the students in order to groom thestudents for personal interviews.Besides CV building, GDPI andpersonality development sessions,events conducted by SSG for CRESTaims to motivate and orient thesetalented bunch of individuals inthe right direction for holisticdevelopment of their competences,skills and individualities for arespectable and equitable position inthe society.

SrijanSrijan was a theme event forBackwaters 2011 which provided theparticipants an opportunity to work onlive issues faced by welfareorganizations that are eager to bringabout change but are bridled bybureaucracy, lack of publicity and theabsence of efficient management. Thefirst round was a strategy event whereparticipants came up with plans tochannelize the government funds toreach the right beneficiaries under theright schemes for the Kerala SocialSecurity Mission. Teams shortlisted forthe second round, worked on liveissues faced by the Pain and PalliativeCare, Kerala. On 18th November 2011,the participants were taken to PPCwhere they witnessed the actual issueswhich the social development sector isdealing with. This sensitization tripwas followed by the final presentationcompetition on 19th November 2011 inwhich the students presented theirideas as consultants of PPC.

The mission of this event was to bringawareness about the issues the societyfaces today with respect to variousissues and to inspire managementstudents to take up roles which can helpimprove the functioning of welfaremissions with the application of theirmanagement education to solve reallife social issues.

Bringing GOONJ toKeralam

- NGO Workshop

On 19th November, a workshop washeld by SSG for various NGOs acrossKerala. This event was primarily aimedat bringing Goonj to Kerala. The SSGwanted to provide a platform to Goonjso as to help the organization build anetwork of NGOs in Kerala to help theentry of its social initiatives in the state.The workshop also gave the NGOs anopportunity to learn about variousaspects of project management. Theworkshop saw participation fromNGOs engaged in the fields of rural

development, sustainability, womenempowerment etc.

The first session was on projectmanagement by Dr Ram Kumar,Professor, Operations Area, IIMKozhikode. The session talked abouthow to approach a new project,improve an existing project’sefficiency and how to ensure there areno cost/time overruns. The sessionexposed the NGOs to new aspects andperspectives on the challenges theyface for their projects.

The second session was by Mr AnshuGupta, Founder-Director of Goonj, aninternationally recognized NGOengaged in sustainable ruraldevelopment, rural elementaryeducation, women empowerment andhygiene besides addressing theclothing requirements ofdisadvantaged sections in far flung andinaccessible rural areas. The sessionwas intended to provide a platform forKerala NGOs and Goonj to share theirexperiences and learn from each other.SSG intends to build a network for allstate NGOs and this session is intendedas the first step in this regard.

Collaboration withJuvenile CareThe mission of SSG’s collaborationwith this government run juvenile

home in Kozhikode is to help relocatechildren in the juvenile center to theirrespective homes. SSG endeavors toprovide background information on thechildren who do not have informationof their past so as to enable theauthorities to decide on the long termplans of these kids. SSG aids theprocess using various measures suchas taking the help of students ofIIMK as communicators andinterpreters in cases where the juvenilehome faces the challenge of relocatinga child who can speak only a particularlanguage rendering the volunteers ofthe juvenile home handicappedbecause of their acquaintance withMalayalam only. During this term,SSG has enabled the relocation of fourchildren. 2 of the children were fromWest Bengal, one of whom was caughtin a police raid for child laborwhereas the other had lost his way allthe way from Dalkhowa, WB up toThalassery. Another Marathi boy fromSatara, Maharashtra was relocated tohis home and SSG was also able tolocate the relatives of a juvenile fromMumbai.

SSG continues with its endeavor ofcollaborating with the Juvenile Homein every way possible so as to help theorganization serves its purpose entirelyand effectively.

With the major upswing noticed in thesector, FMCG companies attracted the largest talent with companieslike HUL, ITC, Marico, Reckitt Benckiser, PepsiCo, Asian Paints,Johnson & Johnson, Kellogg’s, Heinz, Perfetti, Hindustan Coca-Cola Beverages, Dabur & Britannia making a large number ofoffers. “Each of the students was so exceptionally qualified & diligentthat it made my job one of the hardest. We had to ensure that we donot miss out on talent for the organization”, said a senior managerwith ITC. Major players in the telecommunications sector like BhartiAirtel also participated in the process. Companies in other sectorslike Pharma - GSK Pharma, Medtronic; Apparel & Accessories –Madura Fashion & Lifestyle, Titan, Wildcraft; Home Décor –Akzo Nobel & others like AVT McCormick, AVT Tea & Pidilitealso offered challenging roles in the Marketing vertical.

Investment Banks & other financial institutions lapped up 25% ofthe batch and made a higher number of offers as compared to lastyear despite concerns over recessionary trends appearing in Europeanmarkets. The highest stipend offered at IIM Kozhikode was Rs. 1.6lakh by an Australia based investment bank. Participation of the likesof Deutsche Bank, JP Morgan Chase, Nomura, MacquarieCapital, American Express, Standard Chartered Bank, HSBC,Citibank, Goldman Sachs, Edelweiss ensured that there was no

dearth of opportunities for students aspiring to a career in finance.In addition to the roles offered in asset management, equity markets& investment banking, Indian banking majors like ICICI &Axisoffered commercial banking opportunities allowing students tochoose between several different areas of specialization. Companieslike the L&T group, UST & Prism offered roles in CorporateFinance, Payments Enablement and other emerging areas in theFinance vertical.

Strategy & Business Consulting, one of the most sought after areasin recent times showed its growing emergence with a large numberof students taking up roles in this vertical. It saw participation fromloyal recruiters like Deloitte Consulting, Cognizant BusinessConsulting, Nodwin, Wipro Consulting, Asclepius, Mindtree inaddition to several new recruiters.

Many of India’s well known conglomerates participated in theprocess offering roles in operations & general management acrosstheir group companies. TAS, Mahindra & Mahindra, RelianceIndustries, TAFE, L&T, Jindal Steel, GMR offered varied rolesfrom Infrastructure, hospitality & manufacturing including a rolein Sports Management with a top-tier IPL team and a project onimproving productivity at India’s finest Airport. BusinessDevelopment & IT Consulting roles were also in huge demand withcompanies like Infosys, TCS, Aricent, Genpact & Wipro offeringroles in these areas.

Several students chose to break the mould and preferred to take uproles in emerging sectors like Media, Sports Management, Nongovernment enterprise, Healthcare, Online Commerce &Advertising. Companies like MSM India (previously SonyEntertainment Television), HT Media, Bates 141, MillwardBrown, Outsmart 360 & Dr. Hussains’ City attracted a largenumber of students in these growing alternate sectors. Emergingsectors of the Indian economy like realty, educational services &the social sector saw several organizations like EduNirvana,Janaagraha & GEC participate in the process with many studentschoosing them as preferred internship organizations. Mr. JamesMichael David, Head of Training at Outsmart 360 says “ThePlacements committee took care of anything we needed and aboveall did it with a smile. There is an awesome bunch of talentedstudents & we are looking at coming back next year to snatch somemore.”

Media Cell at IIM K entered into partnership withDare2Compete.com as the ‘Online Blogging partner’ withthe latest events, competitions and blogs being publishedon the national blog (http://www.dare2compete.com/blog/author/iimkmediacell). The partnership comes as aninitiative to increase visibility of IIMK student communityon Dare2Compete.com which is accessed by all thegraduates from top B-schools of India and workingprofessionals.

The first of the article series submitted by enthusiasticstudents of PGP 14 and PGP 15 were on topics catering tovarious disciplines like Marketing, Finance,Entrepreneurship, Strategy, Consulting etc. K Sudarshana(PGP14), in her article ‘Larger Than Life CEOs’ talks about

Chief Executives who have managed to become as largeas the organizations they help to steer in the minds of thepublic and debates their existence and need in modern dayorganizations. Saurabh Mahajan (PGP14), in his article‘The Flight to Safety – Debt, downgrade and beyond’ goeson to analyze how the economic turmoil of 2011 continuesto spook investors out of the market to pour trillions ofdollars into the safety of insured deposits, even at recordlow yields. Ameya Anil Tikekar (PGP14), in his article‘Can desirability of a service be improved by manipulatingthe line of visibility?’ discusses how service designer shouldexperiment more with the line of visibility in their serviceblueprint to study the impact it can have on their particularservice operations. The articles have received rave reviewson the national blog from the students’ community.

Sangram, the much awaited annual sports meet betweenIIM Bangalore and IIM Kozhikode was hosted by IIMKozhikode from September 15th to 17th, 2011. Since itsinception in 2004, with each institute taking turns in hostingthe event year after year, Sangram has proved to be afriendly rivalry which boosts sportsmanship and buildsstronger bonds between the two leading managementinstitutes of the country.

Sangram 2011 hosted 16 events, including football, cricket,carom, chess etc, with a participation of over 250 studentsfrom both the institutes together. In the events that wereconducted in IIMK and NIT, Calicut, many high adrenalinemoments were captured. While the visitors excelled inevents like football and cricket, the hosts fought valiantlyin chess, swimming and table-tennis. At the end of the day,IIMB emerged victorious and bagged the coveted Sangram-2011 title

Life at IIMK is not restricted to studies, projectsand submissions alone. There are numerousactivities that happen around the campus every week tohelp students realize the much-needed ‘study-life balance’.These activities are conducted by various clubs of IIMKozhikode to encourage the students to get involved withthe campus and community. The activities span acrossdance, drama, quizzes, art and music, thus enablingstudents to participate in a range of activities.

CulCom, the cultural committee of IIMK in associationwith the Society for Promotion of Indian ClassicalMusic and Culture Amongst Youth (SPICMACAY)organized a Bharatnatyam performance byrenowned Bharatnatyam exponent ‘Nandana Mamani’Lavanya Ananth on 18th October. She gave a wonderfuland spellbinding performance. As a part of Hindi DiwasCelebrations, it also organized ‘Hindi Saptah Special’day which had numerous events like Hindi JAM, HindiDumb Charades, Antakshari etc. Apart from these events,cultural committee brought vibrancy to campus lifeby celebrating occasions such as Dandiya nights, GaneshChaturthi and Diwali. These festivals were celebrated withgreat fanfare and enthusiasm as the entire studentcommunity came together to give the celebration a familiarfeeling of oneness.

Footvibes, the dance club organized ‘Footloose’ - theannual dance competition of IIM Kozhikode. It wasconducted as part of ‘Fusion Nite’ in collaboration withKrescendo, the music club of IIMK. It gave a platform tothe dancers and singers to showcase their skills. The festivalheld on the 3rd of November was a thrilling extravaganzaand an audio/visual treat for everyone. Starting September30th, Krescendo also took the initiative of conducting guitarclasses on campus for students. Despite their hecticschedules, IIMK students gave an overwhelming responseto the initiative with a large number of enthusiastic guitarnovices and semi-pros taking interest in developing earsfor music and fingers for the guitar strings.

IIMK has a rich tradition of quizzers and quiz masters.Atharva, the quizzing club of IIMK organizes campusquizzes from time to time. The quizzing club aims atdeveloping a healthy competitive spirit among the studentsand enthuse them to acquire skills to participatein quiz competitions. The Atharva quizzers have won manyaccolades across competitions conducted all over India.Recently, Atharva hosted Bizzathalon – the BizQuiz inassociation with Backwaters 2011, the annual managementfestival of IIMK. Students from colleges in and aroundKerala participated in the quiz, making it a grand success.

Team Theatrix, the dramatics club of IIMK presented thesecond season of Myriad Musings - Rang Manch 2 onNovember 16th. The event showcased two English plays– ‘Confrontations’ by Vikas Sarangal and ‘Confessions ofan Actor’ by Arun Sethuraman. The renditions receivedrave reviews from the students’ fraternity.

ProLitCult, the English literary club of IIMK regularlyorganizes Vox Populi, an open in-house students’ debateon issues of local and national importance. The latest debatewas on the topic ‘Diversity – for the better or for worse’.

SportsCom, the sports committee of IIMK brought the mostawaited tournament, Kozhikode Football League (KFL)season 2. It is a one-of-a-kind football tournament, whichwas initiated last year, with players being bid for, a la IPL.The bidding started on 23rd Oct. It was an action packedprocess involving the captains, franchisee owners and theteam players. The tournament turned out to be a greatsuccess. SportsCom was also instrumental in helping IIMKget its first pool table and upgrading the students’gymnasium with support from the IIMK administration.

The sports committee also conducted the most prestigiousSporting Battle, the IIMK Inter-Hostel Cricket Tournament.It kicked off on 6th November. The passion and zestdisplayed during these matches was unparalleled. Thetournament ended on 22nd November with Hostel A winningthe championship.

International day was organized on 3rd Novembercelebrating the diversity and sharing of cultures that IIMKfacilitates through its international exchange program withBEM Bordeaux Management School (France),Copenhagen Business School (Denmark), BocconiUniversity (Milano, Italy), European Business School(Oestrich-Winkel, Germany), ESCP (Paris, France),Leipzig Graduate School of Management (Germany),Jönköping International Business School (Sweden),Management Center Innsbruck (Austria), QueenslandUniversity of Technology (Australia), Victoria Universityof Wellington (New Zealand), Norwegian School ofEconomics, Rouen Business School (France), ISCTE-University Institute of Lisbon (Portugal) and ESSCA(France).

The day began with the international exchange studentssharing information about their home countries anduniversities with the students and faculty of IIMK. Laterin the evening, they served dishes native to their countries,and put up a cultural performance to showcase theirexperiences in India. It was a memorable experience forall involved.’

IIMKis in the process of enhancing its International Exchangeactivities. IIM Kozhikode had currently 14 partner institutions, andis accelerating its international engagements on evidenceof the need for greater global exposure for IIMK’s studentsand faculty members.

During the year 2011-12, 35 students from IIMK visited

nine Partner Institutions, viz. European Business School,Germany; ESCP, Paris; Leipzig Graduate School ofManagement, Germany; Rouen Business School, France;Copenhagen Business School, Denmark; BocconiUniversity, Italy; Bordeaux Management School, France;Jonkoping International Business School, Sweden; andNorwegian School of Economics, Norway.

13 students from six Partner Institutions like BordeauxManagement School, France; Bocconi University, Italy;Copenhagen Business School, Denmark; Leipzig GraduateSchool of Management, Germany; Management CenterInnsbruck, Austria; and ESCP, Paris visited IIMK in thisacademic year.

As part of the Business Environment in India course work,11 international students visited organizations like ITC,Tesco, Narayana Hrudayalaya and Cognizant TechnologySolutions in Bangalore and Mysore during November 18-20, 2011. The Business Environment in India course isintended to develop an understanding of the externalenvironment of business and its implications for managerialdecisions.

The Indian Institutes of Management were set up to raiseentrepreneurs and managers who will drive the growth ofour country. Over a period of time, students from IIMs startedgetting more interested in working with foreign MNCs andbanks rather than trying out something of their own. Graduatesfrom IIMs becoming entrepreneurs are once-in-a-blue-moonphenomena and a student of IIM becoming part-timeentrepreneur is something unheard of. Yet, few of theenterprising students of IIMK took the road less travelled.The trend started with Amit Kourav of PGP13 who took thebold step of signing out of placements and starting HighOctane, a coffee shop on campus alongside a DC books stall.High Octane with its plush ambience and delicious offeringsbecame one of the favorite campus hang-outs of students inno time. Amit has literally converted his café into a platformfor trying out the management lessons he learnt at IIMK andis continuously innovating with marketing strategies,operational improvements etc.

While Amit started his venture after passing out from IIMK,certain students like Ambrish Awasthi and ‘The Brotherhood’team ventured into campus services while still in their secondyear. Ambrish launched Shakespeer, a juice centre service atJ-Hostel mess, offering a wide range of fresh fruit juices andmilkshakes to students wanting a welcome change from the

Home-Grown Entrepreneursusual mess food. Ambrish widely used social media marketingskills to communicate his product offerings to his customersthrough his facebook page.

The Campus Delivery Express initiative is a logisticsinnovation initiated by the Brotherhood Team (RavishankarKrishnamurthy, Balaji Murugan, Janani Kannan, AbhinavRavikumar, Kamala Vasantha Thiagarajan, SupriyaBalakrishnan and Ansa Ephraim) to help students on campusenjoy Dominos pizzas whose outlet is around 15-km awayfrom campus. The Brotherhood team accepts pizza ordersfrom students through a simple google-sheet mechanism.Team Brotherhood has negotiated a deal with Dominos andis able to procure pizza at a discounted rate. A part of thisdiscount is transferred to customers while the remaining isused for pizza transportation and distribution along with aprofit margin.

SportsCom, the sports committee of IIMK tapped into theentrepreneurship fever on campus by auctioning offfranchisees of Kozhikode Football League (KFL) - Season 2this year. Four students groups which pooled in money boughtthe franchisees in a high-energy auction conducted at the HighOctane book cafe. The franchisees then went on to deviseand execute elaborate strategies to ensure the title which willhelp them reap rich benefits with the teams battling it out onthe football ground.

Live projects offered to students of IIMK have seen drastic increase over the last 2 years. This is especially because IIMK havemanaged the public perceptions about the institute well and have created a brand for itself in the minds of the local industry. The thrustprovided by the brand has been effectively exploited by the placements committee and the Industrial Interaction Cell (IIC) whichsourced industry assignments as live projects for the students. Dr. Deepa Sethi is an Assistant Professor in the area of Humanities & Liberal Arts in Management at IIMK.Along with contributing in grooming the communication skills of upcoming managers, she has alsosuccessfully developed some highly effective courses in her area for students pursuing their career inmanagement. She has presented and published her research in national and international conferences andjournals and has three published books to her credit. Her current areas of interest are: Managerial

Communication, Written Communication Skills, Online Communication, Employment-related Communication, and SoftSkills for Managers.

IIMK Family Welcomes New Faculty Members

Dr. Naveen Amblee joined IIMK in September 2011, and specializes in Internet Marketing. Previously, hewas a visiting assistant professor of Marketing and MIS at IIM Trichy. Naveen has also served as a visitingprofessor of Marketing at the Graduate School of Culture Technology at KAIST in South Korea, where heconducted research on the digital economy, as well as lecturing to and mentoring graduate students. He hasalso lectured on MIS topics at the Shidler College of Business at the University of Hawaii. Naveen has also

worked with the Pacific Business Center Program at the University of Hawaii, focusing on the remote pacific islands wherehe helped implement various IT initiatives to stimulate economic growth.

Mohammed Shahid Abdulla obtained his Ph.D. in 2008 from the Department of Computer Science andAutomation, Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore. Shahid was with the Customer-Driven Advanced VehicleDesign Group of General Motors R&D, Bangalore (2008-2009) and with the Avionics Department of IndianInstitute of Space Science and Technology (IIST), Trivandrum (2009-2011). His interests are in MachineLearning, Stochastic Processes, Optimization, and Decision Support Systems.

Omkumar Krishnan, is Associate Professor Marketing at IIM Kozhikode. A PhD & MPhil from IIT, Bombay,he specializes in the area of qualitative and quantitative marketing research and has earlier worked withDrishti Strategic Research Services and Lowe Lintas, Bombay. Prior to joining IIMK he was AssociateProfessor at IMT Ghaziabad and worked as Chairperson Marketing area from 2008 to 2010 and wasConference Co-Chair for the two International Conferences on Brand Management organized at IMT

Ghaziabad. Omkumar is also Visiting Faculty of Marketing Research at Chonnam National University, Gwangju, SouthKorea (2010). He teaches courses on Marketing Research, Marketing Management, Consumer Behaviour and Marketing ofServices.

Deepak Dhayanithy is a Fellow, Indian Institute of Management Lucknow, whose work in the retail financialservices industry, for about 7 years, was in decision support. His experience spans marketing, retail risk,valuation, collections and distressed assets management areas. This was in an interesting period of theeconomic cycle (2005-2011), for various consumer credit products - credit cards, installment loans, homeequity products, and mortgages. His current research in this area pertains to FI behavioral model requirements,

Islamic finance products, reverse mortgages, strategy challenges facing FIs in different markets, and C-2-C business models.

Kousik Guhathakurta did his undergraduate studies at Jadavpur University, Kolkata, in the department ofProduction Engineering and completed his MBA majoring in Finance from the same University. He hasover nine years of B-school teaching & research experience preceded by ten years of industrial experienceat various Private and Multinational organisations. Research interests include quantitative finance andeconophysics. Presently involved in research work related to application of analytical tools from non-linear dynamics in deciphering financial time series characteristics.

Indian Institute of Management Kozhikode has beenoffering Executive Postgraduate Programmes on interactivelearning mode since 2001 at various locations in India.These programmes are offered in the area of Managementon a real time synchronous mode. IIMK has made asignificant mark in the Management Education with a clearvision of Globalizing Indian Thought - ranked in the topfour in India, ranked first in South India, first IIM to achieve30 per cent women students’ enrollment, and the first IIMaccredited by AMBA. This programme was started with

the aim of aiding practicing executives who are not in aposition to join any long duration as well as residentialprogramme.

The programme has in-built flexibility which allows theparticipants to gain management education without affectingtheir official duties. Classes incorporate advanced methodssuch as Audio – Video conferencing and other virtualclassroom learning tools. The EPGP students along withtheir correspondence tenure also get the opportunity toundergo the K-experience by spending some time oncampus and under the light of our respected and learnedProfessors.

The Programme has gained a lot of reputation over the yearsand this year saw a notable participation of over 350

enrolments in the EPGP and Executive EducationProgramme in General Management (EEPGM) programme.The participation involved employees of big firms likeMicrosoft, Bank Of America, Mercedes Benz, DeutscheBank to name a few. Such participation not only adds valueto the programme but also shows the advent of IIMK as aninstitution spreading wide across the country and even theworld. The participants were not only impressed by theinfrastructure and pedagogy of the institute but also the

overall environment that the campus provides to them as apackage.

There were three in-campus modules arranged during 8thto 15th October, 15th to 22nd October and 30th October to5th November 2011 covering the participants of threesections of EPGP. There are over 140 participants enrolledfor different specialization modules, viz., ExecutiveEducation Programme in General Management (EEPGM),Executive Education Programme in Finance (EEPF),Executive Education Programme in Strategic Management(EEPSM), Executive Education Programme in Marketing(EEPM) and Executive Education Programme in OperationsManagement (EEPOM). In-campus module for thesespecializations was conducted during 3rd to 9th December2011.
