Late yesterday afternoon a move-

popular, and will redound to the cre-

The object of the organisation will

be to provide ways and m 'ans for

A. Beautiful Structure of Ha-

The Plate a Spbndid Woikof the Jeweler's Art.

Messrs. H. II. Williams & Co.have the casket for the interment ofthe late King about completed. Theword is used advisedly, this beingthe first true casket made here, asdistinguished from a collin. Insteadof being polygonal, its inside linesare rectangular.

The casket is of koa wood withkou tr'unii'ings, the latter being thelighter in color of these two nativewood-- , both of which have a grain asfine and take a polish as high as thefinest mahogany. Its length over allby the lid is seven feet seven inchesand its breadth two feet six inches. The kou trimmings are constructedin Gothic arches, dividing the visibleparts of the koa body into panels.Kou is also used in the rim pieces. The rectangular shape is only aban-

doned in having the coiners of thecasket cut-awa- y.

The lid is six inches in height anda fine piece of joinery. It consistsof terraced layers of koa and kou,the base being ot inch kou, then koaup to the next last streak, and thetop of koa. So well is it put togetherthat the joints are only perceptibleon tiie closest scrutiny. Three orna-

mental handles in kou are attachedto each side of the casket, which is

22 inches deep from the rim. Thewhole struct ur; contains COO piecesof wood. It is richly upholstered on

the inside in while satin.Messrs. Wenner & Co. have made

the plate aid ornaments for the cas- -

ket. More beautiful works of thejeweler's art could hardly be conceiv-ed. A crown of solid silver standingnearly five inches high is placed nearthe head of the lid. It is mountedoil a shield of kou wood. Behindthis object conies the plate, bearingthe following inscription, each divi-

sion making a line by itself, exceptthat the name is divided into twoequal lines at the word "Mahinu-lan- i

UP PUNCHSOWL.

Mr. J. A. Mehiiens has charge ofthe "kukuiaikeawakea" business onthe top of Punchbowl, lie made atrij) up this morning, taking theBci.lktin reporter along in his brake,to select places for the fires. Therewill be seven piles composed of tarbarrels, placed on the rim of thesummit, in view of King au l Nuu-an- u

streets and of the Mausoleum. They will be lighted simultaneouslywhen the fust minute gun is lired.

The drive up by the Emma streetentrance and down by I'ensacolastreet was very pleasant in the fresliair. Of course the road was ratherheavy after the recent rain. One ofthe interesting things to engageattention on the Emma street routeis a large area cultivated in vegeta-bles by Portuguese settlers. Thecrops including much potatoes ap-

pear to be having a vigorous growth, and land is cultivated fully halfwayto the summit.

At the summit Mr. John Cassidy,Government electrician, was engagedwith several native assistants, inerecting a new flagpole that had justarrived. The halyards are gonefrom the old pole and nobody woulddare to replace them, because it isfeared that the pole has become toorotten to sustain a man's weight. The new pole is that which used tostand in front of the now defunctPacific Hose Company's hall on Kingstreet, and its location is close to thetriangulatiou station of the Govern-ment Survey.
