Institution of Civil Engineering Surveyors (ICES) Institution of Civil Engineering Surveyors (ICES) is the professional institution for surveyors and engineers who work in the civil engineering and geospatial industries

Established in 1969 as the Association of Surveyors in Civil Engineering and incorporated in 1972. 

ICES wanted to encourage and regulate the professional aspirations ofquantity surveyors and land surveyors working within the civil engineeringsector and to increase the value of their services to the public.

These surveyors had developed a distinctive expertise and understanding ofthe special surveying requirements of the civil engineering industry which wasnot recognised at that time by any of the existing professional bodies. ICESrepresents individual surveyors and not businesses/corporate members.

History of ICES

Professional OrganisationsICES has developed unique and mutual agreements with the following:

• ICES is an associated body of the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE).

• ICES is a full member of the UK Construction Industry Council (CIC).

• ICES is a member of the International Cost Engineers Association (ICEA).

• ICES is an active member of the International Federation of Surveyors (FIG).

• ICES also works with PI UKChina.

ICES supports the continuing professional development of surveyors studying or working within commercial management and geospatial engineering surveying. Members may specialise in one or more of the following:

Re: Royal Charter Petition

In December 2008, at the instruction of Council of Management, a petition was submitted to the Privy Council seeking Her Majesty’s pleasure in granting a Royal Charter to the Institution.

Last Friday, 20th March 2009, the following message was received from the clerk to the Privy Council:

At the Privy Council meeting on 18th March, Her Majesty approved an Order approving the draft ICES Charter and ordering the Lord Chancellor to pass it under the Great Seal.

Whilst there remain a number of steps before the sealed Charter is received by the Institution, which may take a number of months to complete, I have been advised that these are merely procedural and that the grant of the Charter is now confirmed.

It is therefore with great pleasure that I can advise that at the earliest juncture following the completion of the remaining process, the ICES will move to re-launching itself as:

NewsICES signs historic agreement with Sri LankaICES has agreed a memorandum of understanding with the Institution of Incorporated Engineers of Sri Lanka (IIESL). The MoU recognises the professionalism of members of both institutions and covers reciprocal membership arrangements. The agreement was signed in Dubai by ICES president Steve Jackson and IIESL president Tissa Senevirathna.

Corporate Review InterviewCorporate Review Interview

• The Corporate review interview is a formal interview and is a means for the Institution to effectively

• and fairly assess applications for the Corporate member grade. The Corporate review interview aims to

• provide the candidate with the opportunity to demonstrate knowledge, understanding, competence

• and experience in civil engineering surveying. The interview panel will, in turn, discuss with the

• candidate the information provided within the written application.

• The interview will last one hour.

• Part One — The Presentation• All candidates are asked to prepare and give an informal 10-15

minute presentation about a particular• project (normally the project described in the experience report).

The presentation should be given• without the use of audiovisual aids.• Part Two — Presentation Review• The interview panel will ask questions about the content of the

presentation.• Part Three — Question and Answer Session• The interview panel will put forward a series of questions to the

candidate concerning the following• areas (emphasis is placed on the candidate’s professional

specialism):

The Interview PanelThe interview panel will consist of two or three Institution Fellows and Corporate members. Panelistsundergo interview training. The performance of panels and standards expected from candidates areconstantly monitored by a team of moderators and the Institution’s chief executive. Panelists serve theInstitution on a voluntary basis.
