Considering that he vies with Richard Etrause and Max Reger In being the most dis- cussed man In musical Europe, this is all the x&ore strange, for America Is not as a rule so far behind Germany In the presentation of nov- elties. In American mlnda his name Is almost entirely connected with conducting, for In the years he ha* been In Viei.na lie has made a rep- utation as an operatic conductor and operatic director second to none In the world. A man of forty-six years, his name has appeared on pro- gramme* as a composer for over ten years, but It Is only within a comparatively recent time that his works have begun to march forward toward popular favor. Mahler is a most unusual per- sonality. He seems to possess certain charac- teristics which have made for him en-rules wherever he has gone, even among those who admire his works. He Is a mercilessly despotic and tyrannical master. Lacking tact, or scorning It,he knows not how to smooth the way before him. Striving aver after hi* ideals, he has no patience with those that will not follow him. While there is no question about his genius as a conductor, the most furious controversies have raged end contlnu*- to rare regarding him as a composer. In Germany there seem? to be no middle ground. Either must one proclaim him the greatest of al! moderns or condemn him as a madman without the slightest suspicion of crea- tive talent. It Is a long- work, its performance consuming considerably over an hour. Unlike Mahler's second, third end fourth symphonies, it has no vooal parts, but it is etill unconventional In that in the r^herzo there is a continuous horn obbligato. It contains three parts and live movements, the first and third parts each having two move- ments. Th« fir^\u25a0 movement is called <# A Funeral Train." which is followed by an allegro of "ut- most vehemence." The Fecond part the scherzo. la an old fashioned German Liindler. which is followed in th- third part by the clow move- ment, and finally the rondo-finale The sym- phony was completed in th« spring of 1903. Ow- ing to the length of the symphony only two ether numbers will be on the programme, Bee- thoven's overture to 'Ecrnonf and Schumann's concerto for the pianoforte the solo performer being- Mr Harold Ilauer. Cavara'doMd and Plancon This is what the press agent of the Opera House has to say about "Der Zlgeunerbaron": On Thursday evening 1 we shall have the much talked of special all «tar production of "Der Zlgeunerbaron" ("The Gypsy Baron"), which during some weeks past has been In rehearsal at the Metropolitan under the personal super- vision of Mr. Conrled. It Is a good many years elnoo this characteristic and fascinating three- act opera of Johann Strauss has been heard here, and this will be Its first interpretation at the Metropolitan. Light though It may seem by comparison with the music dramas of Rich- ard Wagner or of the modern Italian school. it Is a favorite In many of the most dignified European opera houses, and seems likely to win fully as much attention as "Die Fledermaus," If not more. It abounds with tuneful muslo and picturesque Incidents, while the costumes and the scenery provided by the management will doubtless enhance its attractiveness. The plot, as many of the older opera goers will remem- ber, concerns the loves and adventures of Barln- kay. the "Gypsy Baron"; Baffl. his gypsy bride, and various other characters, among them Otto- kar, who Is courtlnsr Arnena. the daughter of a droll Hungarian landowner who raises hogs. In the third act of the opera we shall see the triumphal entry of the victorious Hungarians, including a gypsy regiment headed by Barln- kay. In this act will come the "sensation" of the night the appearance, in an Interpolated episode, of the stars and popular singers not in the regular fast, among them Mmes. Ahott. Emma Eames, Fremstad, Jacoby, Jomelll, Mul- ford. Nordlca. Poehlmann, Ralph, Sembrlch. Walker and Weed, with Messrs. Burgstaller, P.£gue. Caruso, Campanarl. Franke, Journet. Knote. Parvis, Plancon, Paroll. Relss, Rossi, Seoul and Van Roojr. These artists will be in- troduced as captives of the victorious troops. In various costumes, and at the request of the Gypsy Baron, will wing solos, duos and other selections for their ransom. Repetitions will be the rule at the opera this week on all the subscription occasions and Sat- urday night, so that the production of Strauss's operetta with vaudeville concert attachment on Thursday evening may have the momentous em- phasis which so frivolous and degrading a per- formance deserves. A plea has been put forth that the operetta Is on the lists of the German opera houses. That Is true, but only In a special sense. In most of the theatres grand opera, comic opera, operetta and the spoken drama are given in more or less regular alternation, but this cannot provide a standard for an in- stitution like the Metropolitan Opera House, in which, under the beet of circumstances, oper- ettas cannot be effectively performed. The popularity which "Per Zigeunerbaron" had for a space in Vienna was due to the comlo acting of Gerardy, who played the part of a Hungarian vulgarian grown rich on hog raising. The humor was local, and would be lost on all but Aus- triane and Germans, even if exploited In an appropriate theatre. The fifth symphony, which will be playedh*r*,had Its lirst performance in Colopn" at aGUrzenlrh concert in October. 1004. It Is a long-work, its performance consuming considerablyover an hour. Unlike Mahler's second, thirdend fourth symphonies, it has no vooal parts,but it is etill unconventional In that in ther^herzo there is a continuous horn obbligato. Itcontains three parts and live movements, thefirst and third parts each having two move-ments. Th« fir^\u25a0 movement is called <#A FuneralTrain." which is followed by an allegro of "ut-most vehemence." The Fecond part the scherzo.la an old fashioned German Liindler. which isfollowed in th- third part by the clow move-ment, and finally the rondo-finale The sym-phony was completed in th« spring of 1903. formance deserves. A plea has been put forththat the operetta Is on the lists of the Germanopera houses. That Is true, but onlyIna specialsense. In most of the theatres grand opera,comic opera, operetta and the spoken dramaare given in more or less regular alternation,but this cannot provide a standard for an in-stitution like the Metropolitan Opera House, inwhich, under the beet of circumstances, oper-ettas cannot be effectively performed.
