2010 Windsor IIE Conference
Post Conference Debrief
This year’s conference was a real success! The University of Windsor did a great job organizing and
planning this national event. We were greeted at a 5 star hotel - Ceasar’s Palace - where students
ravaged the 100,000 sq. ft. casino, where ENGR371 might’ve came in handy (for some anyway)…
This year’s special keynote speaker was Canada’s first Astronaut Marc Garneau, who delivered a very
inspirational speech.
Vic, Vic, Vic, VictooOOOoorious...we are...we are!
First and foremost, on behalf of the committee, I’d like to congratulate ALL of the conference atten-
dees. Each and every one of you contributed to our victory for this year’s Golden I win…High partici-
pation rate, injured vocal cords, sleepless nights, 15 minute power naps, hangover breakfasts, daytime
zombies, night time animals - guaranteed ingredients for success!
Congratulations to Raïssa Haddad who won a 3rd place in the Technical Paper and honourable men-
tions for our Design competition - Amir, Eliane, Atish & Nadine - our Theoretical team - Cedrick, An-
drew, Patrick & Maryam - our card order team - Adnan, Shireen, Paris & Khatib - and the Technical
Paper - Farah. FYI - we also won the Robert F. Moore trophy. What is it you might ask? It’s the trophy for
the best managed student chapter...respect due (to us).

What is your position in IIE?
I am the IIE Regional Vice President for Canada. My role is to assist all the Professional Chapters
and Student Chapters in Canada and act a s a liaison between the chapters and IIE in Atlanta.
Favourite IE term?
“The glass is not half full or half empty, but half the size it needs to be”
Advice to Concordia's IE students?
Get involved in your IE chapter in some way. I did not do this when I was getting my IE degree
from Windsor and I look back and regret it. Although I got involved with IIE later in my career, I look back at the missed opportuni-
ties that could have been if I had gotten involved and networked the moment I chose Industrial Engineering as my undergrad. The
game has changed on how to find your next career. It is all about networking and it starts while you are in university. Get involved
and stay involved for the rest of your career!
Highlight of this year's Conference (other than us winning both Robert F. Moore and Golden I ;)
A couple of things that I liked about the conference in Windsor this year. First I was very impressed with how Windsor focused more
on the quality of the speakers than on the quantity of speakers. It is the first time I can remember that a big name speaker like
Marc Garneau has attended our conference, and I think it added a lot of credibility to the event. Our conference was mentioned
in the local paper and even on the local news. Second has to be the Design Competition. This is something unique to our confer-
ence that the schools in the USA are trying to model their conferences after. Third has to be those videos from each of the schools.
It is truly amazing and funny to watch them all. They get better and better each year.
A few words about next year's conference
I think Polytechnique’s conference in Montreal next year is going to be different. The theme will be on health care and it should be
an exciting conference since they will be the first school to host a conference entirely on this theme.
« The Concordia Chapter has made a name for itself in the last 2 years with a very strong executive. All other chapters
should look at them as role models as to how a chapter should be run and managed. This is further evidenced by the two
awards they won at the Windsor Conference this year. Keep up the good work Concordia! »
Cedrick Laporte-Roy, VP Social
Back in CEGEP, I had no clue where I was going and what I would be studying in University. The only thing I knew at that
time is that I was studying in science and I was pretty successful in that field, but did not have a lot of interest for it, ex-
cept for physics. I was way more interested by business than anything else. Then I heard about the Industrial Engineering
program, which is a mix of business and other engineering discipline. After learning more about it, my decision was taken!
What I love about Industrial Engineering
What I love in indu is the diversity of the knowledge we are earning. As I am finishing my fourth year, I would say that I am
really interested by manufacturing, lean and logistics (OR).
What I would tell myself in first year...
Cedrick: don’t get put off by the classes that don’t interest you, focus on your goal; keep on studying as it will get more interesting during the third
and fourth year! Another advice would be to get involved with IIE or any other organization or committee, as it is an amazing chance to enlarge
your social and professional network and it will also allow you to develop your soft skills, which is REALLY important for your future and unfortunately,
you will not learn this in class. Last but not least, WORK HARD, PLAY HARD, so come to our Lizard Lounge on Feb 12th!!!!
What’s next for me?
As soon as I finish my degree, I will go on a big trip as I really love travelling and I still have so much to discover from life. As soon as I’ll be back from
my trip, I might work for a beer company in operations and logistics or for a ski company in lean manufacturing. I might also go work abroad as I
have many contacts in the United Arab Emirates. After few years working, I want to begin an MBA or a Masters in Industrial Management as I am
really interested by senior management positions.
