Mary Ann Rollans [[email protected]] Tuesday, September 21, 2010 9:19AM 'Tammy Rhodes' 'Jennifer Saxton' Cosmetic Change for ECE image001.jpg

I am requesting the following cosmetic change to be made in the curricnlum for the AS in ECE:

For the Curriculum in ECE, delete WS 1002 from required activity. Allow any general education activity. Rationale: Since many students are unable to take WS 1002, this would eliminate amended audits.

CURRICULUM IN FOREIGN LANGUAGE WITH CONCENTRATION IN SPANISH

Request:

Describe the evidence derived from your program assessment that justifies this change.

Assessment evidence may come from direct and indirect measures of student learning as well as

The rationale for prioritizing some general education choices over others is insufficient to justify adding hours to the degree programs of Spanish or Spanish Education majors who have completed alternative general education courses.

The University's general education options are carefully considered and all alternative choices can

benefit Spanish Education and Spanish majors. Faculty will continue to be able to make suggestions

Request: Change the current co-requisites of MGMT 3103 to prerequisite and change the course description to read as follows: "Each semester. Prerequisites: Senior standing and completion of all junior-/eve/ College of Business core courses. As the capstone course in the College of Business core, this course examines the application of strategic management processes, including top management's role in situational analysis, strategy selection, strategy implementation, and strategic control, under conditions of uncertainty."

Describe the evidence derived from your program assessment that justifies this change. The ETS Major Field Exam historically has been given at the end of the term in Business Policy. Operations is a subtest of the Major Field Exam. Students scored at the 51st percentile on the Operations portion of the ETS during the May 2010 assessment. In order to increase commitment to the measure, the ETS exam will now be given earlier in the term so that it may become part of the graded requirements of the Business Policy class. This means that the content of Operations will be assessed before it has been completed if it remains a co-requisite to Business Policy.

In the 2010-2011 Graduate Catalog on the Masters of Engineering page (http://www.atu.edu/academics/cataloggraduate/programs/ms eng engineering.html) under Degree Requirements the following is listed under "Common Core"

Common Core (12 hours) MGMT 5203- Project Management SPH 5063- Organizational Communications MATH 5343- Partial Differential Equations 6 hours from: MATH 5103- Linear Algebra II MATH 5153- Applied Statistics II MATH 5273- Complex Variables MATH 5243- Differential Equations II

The first MATH course listed, MATH 5343- Partial Differential Equations, should be in the list of math courses below the "6 hours from:" l ine instead of being a stand-alone requirement. As listed, this makes the Common Core 15 hours (three classes listed plus 6 hours) instead of the intended 12 hours.

Hopefully this i.s considered "cosmetic" as this is the intent of changes submitted to, and approved by, the Graduate

Council this past year.

upper classmen would enroll in the course to earn an easy "A". Since the class has been

offered data has indicated that the average grade in the cou rse is a "C" . Monitoring the

enrollment of non-freshmen in CSP 1 0 1 3 is a time consuming manual process. All non-

freshmen wanting to take CSP 1 0 1 3 have had to discuss their academic record and their

need for taking the course prior to receiving approval to enroll. The chart below indicates

the number of non-freshmen who have been approved to take the course. These students

have been approved by the CSP Program Director, their academic advisor, and ultimately

by the Vice President of Academic Affairs. The students have been advised to take the

course by academi c advisors and mentors because of poor academic performance,

problems with poor study skills, exceptionally challenging academic s chedules, being fi rst

semester col lege students with advanced credit, or being in danger of losing a scholarship.

Additionally, non-freshmen on probation are encouraged to enroll i n CSP 1 0 1 3 by the Office

of the Registrar who sends a flyer on the benef its of CSP 1 0 1 3 to all students on probation.

Beginning with the Fall 2008 semester all incoming f reshmen at ATU have been required to

take a f reshman orientation course during their first semester of enrollment. As a result of

this requi rement the CSP 1 1 03 enrollment has significantly increased and we anticipate that

fewer non-f reshmen will be eligible to e·nrol l i n CSP 1 0 1 3 i n the future.

I 3 REQUEST FOR COSMETIC CHANGES

Subject: Foreign Language Emphasis Block in General Studies degree

Request:

Eliminate the confusing note in the description of the foreign language emphasis block so that the catalog text reads simply:

Foreign Language: 16 hours Any catalogue sequence of 4 foreign languages numbered 1014, 1024,2014, and 2024 in the same foreign language, for a total of 16 hours.

Describe the evidence derived from your program assessment that justifies this change.

Assessment evidence may come from direct and indirect measures of student learning as well as

analysis of the current state of the discipline.

The Registrar's Office brought the ambiguous current description to our attention while trying to work on a student's degree audit. This change will reflect our intentions with greater accuracy.

If this change will affect other departments, a Departmental Support Form for each affected department must be attached.

A support form from the Department of Foreign Languages is attached.

I prepared a Request for Cosmetic Change form to fix the ambiguous description of the foreign language emphasis, but

as it is in your College, I think the request should come from you. Edit the form as you see fit. I have put a signed s upport

form in the mail to you. Then you can send them both to Tammy Rhodes. I don't know if she will accept it as the October

1 deadline has passed, but it's worth a try.

Mary Ann:

Brandi in the Registrar's Office just called regarding the description of the Foreign Language emphasis in the Professional

Studies degree.

At present it reads:

Foreign Language: 15-16 hours Any catalogue sequence of 4 foreign languages numbered 1014, 1024, 2014, and 2024 in

the same foreign language, for a total of 16 hours. If the student beg ins the foreign language b lock on a more advanced

level, the student must take 1 5 hours of the same foreign languages, excluding F R/GER/SPAN 3023.

The requirement as stated here is unclear although I suspect it was originally intended to require students with

advanced skil ls to take additional course work. I suggest that it be reworded as follows :

Foreign Language: 16 hours Any catalogue sequence of 4 foreign languages numbered 1014, 1024, 2014, and 2024 in

the same foreign language, for a tota l of 16 hours.

Students who are able to start in a more advanced course and earn a C or better i n the course are given credit for the

previous courses in the sequence. I don't see why such students should be penal ized by requiring them to take

additional hours; moreover, this would discourage students from starting in the appropriate cou rse.

What do you think?

REQUEST FOR COSMETIC CHANGES

Course Subject: Animal Science yourse Number: AGAS 4203

Official Title: Animal Nutrition (/) Request: Change the name to: Livestock and Poultry Nutrition and remove AGAS 3323 Poultry Nutrition as q,course offering in the Animal Science Option(f'c?o-tnok ;) , / ?-" t 1

u)e" ,., e.Y Please provide a rationale for the change including the evidence derived from your program assessment that justifies this change. Assessment evidence may come from direct and indirect measures of student learning as well as analysis of the current state of the discipline. Currently, information is being duplicated between the current Animal Nutrition and Poultry Nutrition courses. Furthermore, the Poultry Nutrition course is not required by any major offered in the department nor does its content include vital student learning information that is not found elsewhere in the Animal Science option of the curriculum. Removing AGAS 3323 eliminates advising confusion and allocates departmental resources toward an essential course. By also changing the name of AGAS 4203 to Livestock and Poultry Nutrition, the new course title best reflects the ongoing content of the course as it has typically been taught. Neither the curriculum nor course content will be affected by this proposal. Overall, this change clarifies advising for students as they progress through the program.

If this change will affect other departments, a Departmental Support Form for each affected department must be attached. These changes will not affect any other department.

REQUEST FOR COSMETIC CHANGES

Course Subject: Animal Science I Course Number: AGAS 4303

Official Title: Poultry Diseases

Request: Change the Title to: Livestock and Poultry Diseases

The Poultry Diseases course is not required in any option offered in the Agriculture Department. With no option requirement the number of students that enroll is small with just a poultry emphasis. However, the addition of livestock will make this course more appealing to other students in the department including the pre-vet students.

This change will have no affect on any other department.

REQUEST FOR COSMETIC CHANGES

Course Subject: ART Course Number:3223

Official Title Three Dimensional Graphic Design

Request: Eliminate Art 3203 Typography and Layout as prerequisite in course description.

Please provide a rationale for the change including the evidence derived from your program assessment that justifies this change. Assessment evidence may come from direct and indirect measures of student learning as well as analysis of the current state of the discipline. Art courses 3203 and 3223 are only offered during the Fall Semester. Currently, this is creating an unnecessary backup of a year for students to complete course work a nd as software has changed, it has become unnecessary for 3203 to be prerequisite.

If this change will affect other departments, a Departmental Support Form for each affected department must be a ttached. NA

Note: Additional notation for Art 3223 Three Dimensional Design, eliminating Art 3203 Typography and Layout as prerequisite

In addit ion to the rationale provided and to respond to assessment commentary, curriculum scope and sequence to include current staffing chal lenges wi l l not allow for additional sect ions of Typography to be offered. The Ty pography

course is focused on a broad

base of type applications, with more application to 2- D layout than 3-D formats . The new software to be installed next

semester (with appli cation to 3-D graphics) is more user friendly and has merged 2-D and 3-D type applications, with

more creative focus on

developing type for mult idimensional surface applications. The Ty pography class is still useful as prerequisite for ot her

courses but not for course content for Art 3223.

I will be out of the office November 4/5 - if you have questions please contact Lyn Brands, instructor of the courses :

Course Subject: I Course Number: EL EG 2113 Official Title: Electric Circuits II Request: To remove the prerequisite/corequisite from MATH 3243 since it is proposed to be the corequisite for the prerequisite of this course ( EL EG 21 03). Also, to add the corequisite of ELEG 2111. The description of ELEG 2111 currently requires EL EG 2113 as a corequisite but students are allowed to register for ELEG 2113 without EL EG 2111 without a flag in Banner. When they take EL EG 2111 an override is granted to allow students to take the lab without repeating the course ELEG 2103.

ELEG2113 ELECTRIC CIRCUITS II

Prerequisite: ELEG 2 1 03 or consent of instructor. Prerequisite/Corequisite MATH 3:243. A

continuation of ELEG 2103 covering phasor analysis, steady state power, complex network functions, frequency response, transformers, Laplace methods. Lecture three hours.

ELEG2113 ELECTRIC CIRCUITS II

Prerequisite: ELEG 2103 or consent of instructor. Corequisite: ELEG 2.1.11. A continuation of ELEG 2103 covering phasor analysis, steady state power, complex network functions, frequency response, transformers, Laplace methods. Lecture three hours.

Please provide a rationale for the change including the evidence derived from your program assessment that justifies this change. Assessment evidence may come from direct and indirect measures of student learning as well as analysis of the current state of the discipline.

During our accreditation visit, it was noted by our evaluators that students were routinely granted prerequisite/corequiste exceptions. This should reduce the number of these exceptions. The intention has always been that the ELEG 2111 and 2113 be taken concurrently as presented in the course description for the lab. Additionally, courses in the School of Natural and H ealth Sciences and Electrical Engineering Courses at most all institutions including the University of Arkansas require concurrent course and associated labs. If this change will affect other departments, a Departmental Support Form for each affected department must be attached. This change will affect the Physical Sciences and Mechanical Engineering Departments.

Subject: RE: Cosmetic Changes

Dear Dr. Roberts and Mrs. Rhodes,

For the EL EG 3133 proposed cosmetic change there is additional assessment data and history. Dr. Casti l lo observed a

weakness i n the programming abil it ies of students i n EL EG 3133 the two semesters of the 2009-10 school year. Other

efforts have been made to improve the students' ability to learn and retain knowledge of Programming i n C which is the

COMS 2803 class. A meeting with the instructors of COMS 2803 occurred in August to relay our departmental concerns

and request greater rigor in the course since it is primarily a support course for o u r department. Dr. Cast i l lo also

emailed the students registered for EL EG 3133 this fall during the summer and provided onl ine materials that would

improve their programming sk i l ls. Dr. Castillo administered a pre-requisite assessment exam to the ELE G 3133 this

September and the mean score was 65%. (This data was not available at the time of the submission of the cosmetic

changes.) Our only requested change fo r EL EG 3133 is to sl ide it to the semester immediately following the COMS 2803

pre-requisite class in the 8 semester matrix so that students might improve their retention of their programming skil ls.

Thanks for all the work you do to keep the EE ship afloat!

Department Heads:

Please review comments in the attached fi l e provided by Dr. Carey Roberts regarding Requests for Cosmetic Changes.

Dr. Roberts noted, just because a change is rendered "cosmetic" does not alleviate using proper assessment and student

lear ning data to justify the change .

For proposals needing additional assessment information to j u stify the change, please email me the information to be

included with the request by Friday, N ovember 5. I would l i ke to post the proposals for the 2-week review on Monday,

November 8.

Thanks.

Request:

REQUEST CHANGING THE FIRST SENTENCE OF T H E CATALOG DESCRI PTION U N DER THE

HEADING "FOREIGN LANGUAGES" TO T H E FOLLOWING: .I

All foreign language majors will be required to take the ACTFL Oral Proficiency Interview (OPI) prior 1 to graduation and score at the Intermediate High level. (

This changes the required score level from Advanced Low to Intermediate High.

Describe the evidence derived from your program assessment that justifies this change.

Assessment evidence may come from direct and indirect measures of student learning as well as

analysis of the current state of the discipline.

OPI scores gathered in SPAN 4003 over the past two years as part of our ACTFL accreditation assessment show that Intermediate High is a more reasonable score level for foreign language majors who are not planning to teach.

If this change will affect other departments, a Departmental Support Form for each affected department must be attached.

This change does not alter the requirement for foreign language education majors; therefore, the

change will not affect any other program or department.

I don't reca ll seeing this in the batc h of cosmetic changes, but there needs to be a catalogue description change for HIST

4153. I know that Jeff is t he person responsible for sending this to you, but he's c urrently out of town, a nd I don't wish

to miss the deadline.

It c urrently reads :

HIST 41 53 HISTORY OF ARKANSAS

A study of the history of Arkansas from prehistoric times to the present, noting political, social, economic, and cultural trends. May not be taken for credit after completion of HIST 3 1 53 nor repeated for credit as HIST 5 1 53 or equivalent

The new description should read :

HIST 41 53 HISTORY OF ARKANSAS

A study of the history of Arkansas from prehistoric times to the present, noting political, social, economic, and cultural trends. May not be taken for credit after completion of H 1ST 2 1 53 nor repeated for credit as HIST 5 1 53 or equivalent

Justification:

This is a typo that needs to be c orrected in the catalogue. No course numbered HIST 3153 cu rrent ly exists. More

importantly, this disc repancy has caused serious c onfusion among both students a nd their advisers in terms of program

requirements .

REQUEST FOR COSMETIC CHANGES

Course Subject: Course Number: MCEG 1012 Official Title: Introduction to Engineerin Request: Change the prerequisite listed to a co-requisite and change the course description from:

Current Catalogue Description:

Prerequisites: MATH 1 1 13 or any higher level mathematics course . An introductory course to acquaint student with the technical and social aspects of engineering, the analytical approach to problem solving, measurements and calculations, including application of computer techniques. Lecture one hour, laboratory two hours.

Proposed description

Co-requisite: MATH 1 1 13 or any higher level mathematics course. An introductory course to acquaint students with the technical and ethical aspects of engineering, the analytic approach to problem solving, measurements and calculations . Two hours lecture/lab .

Please provide a rationale for the change including the evidence derived from your program assessment that justifies this change. Assessment evidence may come from direct and indirect measures of student learning as well as analysis of the current state of the discipline.

This change will allow more students declaring engineering as a major but not enrolled in Calculus to take the class their first semester and better reflects the course as taught.

I f this change will affect other departments, a Departmental Support Form for each affected department must be attached. Electrical Engineering will be submitting an identical request.

Please provide a rationale for the change including the evidence derived from your program assessment that justifies this change. Assessment evidence may come from direct and indirect measures of student learning as well as analysis of the current state of the discipline.

After gaining experience in teaching this relatively new course for a few years, the instructor has determined that students are sufficiently prepared in thermodynamics topics in the prerequisite MCEG 3313 course and that the additional requirement of a MCEG 4433 co-requisite is not necessary for student success in this course. In addition, MCEG 4433 is typically not taught in the same semester which makes the co-requisite listing virtually impossible to comply with.

If this change will affect other departments, a Departmental Support Form for each affected department must be attached.

RE: Cosmetic Changes 4332changes.doc

To clarify the questions regarding MCEG 4332 (Dr. Roberts has accidentally changed this n u m ber to "4432"), we

have not changed the cou rse since its inception. A better explanation of why we feel this change is needed and

appropriate is that the prerequ isite thermodynamics course ( M CEG 3313) has proved sufficient preparation for students

taking this lab. That, along with the scheduling d ifficulty, are the primary reasons for this requested change. I have

attached a new version of the change request reflecting this better explanation.

The current curricula have several instances of two-semester course sequences separated by one of more semesters. The department believes that student's knowledge retention will be better if these lags are eliminated. In addition, due to new co-/pre-requisite requirements for ELEG 21 03, this course had to be moved to a later semester in the spring start schedule.

If this change will affect other departments, a Departmental Support Form for each affected department must be attached.

Electrical Engineering is the only department affected by these changes.

I've added a more detailed explanation. Let me know if this is what you needed or if you'd like something else/more.

JOUR 6053

Media and Society

Request: Remove SPH 5003 as the prerequisite for the course.

Evidence: The graduate Masters of Multimedia Journalism degree will no longer require SPH 5003 as part of its

curriculum. The department is putting forth curriculum proposals for five new courses for the degree. These new

courses address the theoretical background, technical skills and professional approach students will need in pursuing

multimedia journalism. As a result of the new, more content specific courses, we will no longer need the SPH course in

the degree.

JOUR 6133

Multimedia Publishing

Request: Remove JOUR 5163 as the prerequisite for the cou rse.

Evidence: The graduate Masters of Multimedia Journalism degree will no longer require JOUR 5163 as part of its

curricu lum. JOUR 5163 will become an elective course in the graduate degree. The new courses wil l more directly deal

with multimedia content than the JOUR 5163 (Advanced Photography) cou rse has in the past. Based on journalism

industry dema nds, we will be separating photography and expanding video in these distinct courses.

The proposed cosmetic change changing the biology general ed requirement for Rehabilitation sciences is not a cosmetic change.

The list of courses are not all general education courses and the Environemental Science course which is not offered as gen ed is not listed.

Also I see no rational or any other materials in the PDF.

High

I appreciate your assistance with this proposed cosmetic change.

It is indeed the intention of the Department of Biological Sciences to cross-list the newly approved "AGPM 3104,

Introduction to Entomology" in our Department. We already had a similar course in the catalog that differed only in

number and minor cosmetic aspects of the course description, thus, I view this as a "cosmetic change".

The change that I recommend is to change our existing BIOL 3094 course number to match that of the new course, so

that it will become BIOL 3104. To further assure consistency, I also recommend that the catalog description of the BIOL

3104 include a course description that matches that of the AGPM 3104 listing which is appended below.

We discussed this cross-listing with faculty and the Head of the Department of Agriculture when the new course was

initially proposed and the notion to cross-list with us was mentioned in the approved new course proposal from

Agriculture, thus, I am sure that this mechanical detail constitutes a previously approved intention.

Please let me know if any other action is needed from this department to effect this change. Thank you.

Outline change in program and attach curriculum matrix: To improve the flexibility in course selection for distant students, there needs to be a wider selection of general education courses that can be offered without submitting substitution request forms. This can

be facilitated by simply adding a footnote to the courses listed In the matrix. Other changes noted in the matrix result from previous curriculum changes so that the matrix is consistent. The overall

objective Is to change some of the general education requirements from prescribed courses to any

general education choice from the list of approved general education courses in respective categories.

What impact will the change have on staffing, on other programs and space allocation?

No Impact

Please provide a rationale for the need for this new course including the evidence derived from your

program assessment. Assessment evidence may come from direct and indirect measures of student

learning as well as analysis of the current state of the discipline. N/A

If this course will affect other departments a Departmental Support Form for each affected department

must be attached. Will not affect any other department since the general education courses are already in place.
