WORLD STUDIES
THE HEXAGON
EXTENDED ESSAY or ESSAY IN WORLD STUDIES IS:
Compulsory for all Diploma Programme students
A piece of independent research/investigation on a topic chosen by the student in cooperation with a supervisor in the school
Externally assessed (max. 3 points together with TOK Essay)
Extended Essay and TOK Matrix (E is a failing condition)
THE MAIN AIMS OF THE EXTENDED ESSAY:
Pursue independent research on a focused topic
Develop research and communication skills
Develop the skills of creative and critical thinking
Engage in a systematic process of research appropriate to the subject
Experience the excitement of intellectual discovery.
EXTENDED ESSAY OR WORLD STUDY ESSAY IS:
Approved DP subjects
Formal piece of writing, in max. 4,000 words
40 hours work (Student), 3 – 5 (Teacher)
Concluded with a short interview, or viva voce
