The findings should apply not just to letters, but to anything we see. "What we find should hold true for any sort of object -- cars, birds, faces. Expertise matters. It changes how you perceive things," Wiley said. "Part of being an expert is learning what matters and what doesn't matter -- including visual features. You know what to look for."

SURAH MULK 67 V.2

AND HE IS THE MIGHTY, THE FORGIVING,

1. ALLAH ALONE WILL DECIDE WHO DID GOOD AND WHO DID EVIL. THE CHALLENGE IS TO IMPRESS ALLAH SWT, NOT ANYONE ELSE

2. ALLAH ESTABLISHES THE CRITERIA FOR GOOD AND EVIL

3. WHOEVER DESIRES TO GET THROUGH THE TEST MUST PERFORM ACCORDING TO ALLAH’S RULES

4. ONE HAS TO MAKE AN EFFORT TO LEARN WHAT THE RULES ARE

5. THE TEST IS IHSAN AND THE PRIZE WILL EITHER BE IHSAN / BEAUTIFUL REWARD OR EVIL / PUNISHMENT

THIS IS WHY THE VERSE ENDS WITH AZIZ AND GHAFOOR. BECAUSE ALLAH SWT IS ‘ALL - MIGHTY’ AND ABLE TO METE OUT PUNISHMENT TO THE EVIL-DOERS , BUT INSPITE OF HIS POWER HE IS ‘MOST -FORGIVING’, AND IS ABLE TO FORGIVE THOSE WHO REFRAIN FROM EVIL AND SEEK HIS FORGIVENESS

THE BEAUTIFUL TAFSEER OF THIS AYAT

IHSAN IS NECESSARY FOR EVERY SINGLE ACTION

THE WORD AMALAN IN THIS VERSE INDICATES BEAUTIFULLY TO ALL DEEDS AND NOT ONLY

RELIGIOUS DEEDS (IBADAH)

THE WORD AHSAN IS IN THE SUPERLATIVE FORM INDICATING THE ACTIONS SHOULD BE DONE WITH

THE UTMOST BEAUTY AS IF ONE IS COMPETING FOR THE APPROVAL OF ALLAH SWT

ومنهم من يقول ربنا آتنا في الدنيا حسنة وفي اآلخرة حسنة وقنا عذاب

النارAnd of them there are some who say: "Our Lord!

Give us in this world that which is good and in the Hereafter that which is good, and save us from the

torment of the Fire!"

Surah Baqara v.201

IHSAN IS WHAT ALLAH SWT HAS COMMANDED US TO SEEK AND ASPIRE TO

WHY IHSAN ? IT GAINS ONE THE LOVE AND CLOSENESS OF ALLAH SWT

راء والكاظمني الغيظ راء والض الذين ينفقون في الس والعافني عن الناس واهلل يحب املحسنني

Those who spend [in Allah's Cause - deeds of charity, alms, etc.] in prosperity and in adversity, who repress anger, and who pardon men;

verily, Allah loves Al-Muhsinun (the good-doers).

Surah Aal-e-Imran v.134

والذين جاهدوا فينا لنهدينهم سبلنا وإن اهلل ملع املحسنني

As for those who strive hard in Us (Our Cause), We will surely guide them to Our Paths (i.e. Allah's Religion - Islamic Monotheism). And verily, Allah is with

the Muhsinun (good doers)."

Surah Ankaboot v.69

وال تفسدوا في األرض بعد إصالحها وادعوه خوفا وطمعا إن رحمت اهلل قريب

من املحسننيAnd do not do mischief on the earth, after it

has been set in order, and invoke Him with fear and hope; Surely, Allah's Mercy is (ever) near

unto the good-doers.

IHSAN IS A KEY TO GUIDANCE

Surah Nisa 4 v.40

إن اهلل ال يظلم مثقال ذرة وإن تك حسنة يضاعفها ويؤت من لدنه

أجرا عظيماSurely Allah does not do injustice to the weight

of an atom, and if it is a good deed He multiplies it and gives from Himself a great

reward.

ALLAH SWT MULTIPLIES AND FURTHER INCREASES IHSAN

ACTING WITHOUT IHSAN TOWARDS THE CREATION CAN BE DESTRUCTIVE

عن ابن عمر ـ رضى اهلل عنهما ـ عن النبي صلى اهلل عليه وسلم قال " دخلت امرأة النار في هرة ربطتها،فلم تطعمها، ولم تدعها تأكل من خشاش األرض

Narrated Ibn `Umar:The Prophet (ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص) said, "A woman entered the (Hell)

Fire because of a cat which she had tied, neither giving it food nor setting it free to eat from the

vermin of the earth. “ - Bukhari

NEGLECTING OR TRIVIALISING IHSAN COULD INCUR ALLAH’S ANGER

عن أبي الدرداء، أن النبي صلى اهلل عليه وسلم قال " ما شيء أثقل في ميزان املؤمن يوم القيامة منخلق حسن وإن اهلل ليبغض الفاحش البذيء

Abu Ad-Dardh narrated that the Messenger of Allah said:

"Nothing is heavier on the believer's Scale on the Day of Judgment than good

character. For indeed Allah, Most High, is angered by the shameless obscene

person." - TIRMIDHI

ACTING WITHOUT IHSAN WILL LEAD TO THE FIRE AND TO ETERNAL REGRET

أو تقول حني ترى العذاب لو أن لي كرة فأكون من املحسننيOr (lest) he should say when he sees the torment: "If only I had another chance (to

return to the world) then I should indeed be among the Muhsinun

Surah Zumar v.58

IHSAN WAS ENJOINED UPON US AND THOSE BEFORE US AND MENTIONED BEFORE PRAYER

إذ أخذنا ميثاق بني إسرائيل ال تعبدون إال اهلل وبالوالدين و إحسانا وذي القربى واليتامى واملساكني وقولوا للناس

الة وآتوا الزكاة ثم توليتم إال قليال منكم حسنا وأقيموا الص وأنتم معرضون

And when We made a covenant with the children of Israel: You shall not serve any but Allah and (you shall

do) good to (your) parents, and to the near of kin and to the orphans and the needy, and you shall speak to men good words and keep up prayer and pay the poor-rate.

Then you turned back except a few of you and (now too) you turn aside.

Surah Baqara v.83

IHSAN RAISES ONE’S RANKS

عن عائشة، رحمها اهلل قالت سمعت رسول اهلل صلى اهلل عليه وسلم يقول

إن املؤمن ليدرك بحسن خلقه درجة " ائم القائم الص

Narrated Aisha, Ummul Mu'minin:

The Messenger of Allah (ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص) said: By his good character a believer will attain the degree of

one who prays during the night and fasts during the day. - ABU DAWUD

IHSAN AND TREATMENT OF WOMEN ARE THE BENCHMARKS OF A MAN’S IMAN

عن أبي هريرة، قال قال رسول اهلل صلى اهلل عليه وسلم " أكمل املؤمنني إيمانا

أحسنهم خلقا وخياركم خياركم لنسائهم خلقا "

Abu Hurairah narrated that The Messenger of Allah said:

“The most complete of the believers in faith, is the one with the best character among

them. And the best of you are those who are best to your women.” - TIRMIDHI

PIETY IS IHSAN

:عن النبي صلى اهلل عليه وسلم قال

البر حسن الخلق، واإلثم ما حاك فى نفسك، وكرهت ”أن يطلع عليه الناس

.((رواه مسلم))

The Prophet (ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص) said, "Piety is good manner, and sin is that which creates

doubt and you do not like people to know of it."

IT WAS THE WAY OF OUR FATHER IBRAHIM A.S.

قد كانت لكم أسوة حسنة في إبراهيم والذين معه

Indeed there has been an excellent example for you in Ibrahim (Abraham) and

those with him,

51. Surah Al-Mumtahina, Verse 4:

IBRAHIM A.S. WAS MAN OF IHSAN AND ALLAH SWT TOOK HIM AS A FRIEND

ن أسلم وجهه هلل وهو محسن ومن أحسن دينا مم واتبع ملة إبراهيم حنيفا واتخذ اهلل إبراهيم

And who can be better in religion than one who submits his face (himself) to Allah and he is a Muhsin

. And follows the religion of Ibrahim (Abraham) Hanifa. And Allah did take Ibrahim (Abraham) as a

Khalil (an intimate friend).

11. Surah An-Nisa, Verse 125:

IT IS THE ESSENCE OF THE PROPHETIC MESSAGE

ن لقد كان لكم في رسول اهلل أسوة حسنة مل كان يرجو اهلل واليوم اآلخر وذكر اهلل كثيرا

Indeed in the Messenger of Allah (Muhammad SAW) you have a good example to follow for him who

hopes in (the Meeting with) Allah and the Last Day and remembers Allah much.

41. Surah Al-Ahzab, Verse 21:

IT IS THE ESSENCE OF THE PROPHETIC MESSAGE

عن مالك، أنه قد بلغه أن رسول اهلل صلى اهلل عليه وسلم قال

م حسن األخالق بعثت ألتم

Yahya related to me from Malik that he had heard that the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said,

"I was sent to perfect good character.”

MUWATTA

Surah Al Lail 92 v.5

فأما من أعطى واتقىThen as for him who gives away

and guards (against evil),

Surah Al Lail 92 v.6

وصدق بالحسنىAnd he believes in Ihsan,

Surah Al Lail 92 v.7

ره لليسرى فسنيسWe will facilitate for him the

easy end.

Surah Al Lail 92 v.8

وأما من بخل واستغنى

And as for him who is miserly and considers himself free

from need (of Allah),

Surah Al Lail 92 v.9

وكذب بالحسنىAnd rejects Ihsan,

Surah Al Lail 92 v.10

ره للعسرى فسنيسWe will facilitate for him the

difficult end.

WHOEVER BRINGS A GOOD DEED, HE SHALL HAVE TEN LIKE IT, AND WHOEVER BRINGS AN EVIL DEED, HE

SHALL BE RECOMPENSED ONLY WITH THE LIKE OF IT, AND THEY SHALL NOT BE DEALT WITH UNJUSTLY.

THE LITERAL MEANING OF THE WORD  'HASANA/ حسن' IN ARABIC IS BEAUTIFUL. ONE OF THE LITERAL MEANINGS OF THE WORD“SU' سوء" IN ARABIC IS UGLY, AND

‘SAYYIYA سيئة’ IS EVIL / VICE

WHEN YOUR GOOD DEED PLEASES YOU AND THE BAD ONE TROUBLES YOU - THAT IS THE

SIGN OF A GOOD BELIEVER. 

ALLAH SWT IS GIVING US A GREAT WISDOM WITH THE USAGE OF THESE TWO

WORDS.

عن عمر رضي اهلل عنه أيضا قال: " بينما نحن جلوس عند رسول اهلل صلى اهلل عليه و سلم ذات يوم، إذ طلع علينا رجل شديد بياضفر، وال يعرفه منا عر، ال يرى عليه أثر الس الثياب، شديد سواد الش أحد. حتى جلس إلى النبي صلى اهلل عليه و سلم . فأسند ركبتيه

 ،إلى ركبتيه، ووضع كفيه على فخذيه

HADITH JIBRIL

WHILE WE WERE ONE DAY SITTING WITH THE MESSENGER OF ALLAH (ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص) THERE APPEARED BEFORE

US A MAN DRESSED IN EXTREMELY WHITE CLOTHES AND WITH VERY BLACK HAIR. NO TRACES OF JOURNEYING

WERE VISIBLE ON HIM, AND NONE OF US KNEW HIM. HE SAT DOWN CLOSE BY THE PROPHET (ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص) RESTED HIS

KNEES AGAINST THE KNEES OF THE PROPHET (ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص) AND PLACED HIS PALMS OVER HIS THIGHS,

سالم د أخبرني عن اإل  .وقال: يا محمسالم أن تشهد أن ال إله فقال رسول اهلل صلى اهلل عليه و سلم اإلالة، وتؤتي الزكاة، دا رسول اهلل، وتقيم الص إال اهلل وأن محم.وتصوم رمضان، وتحج البيت إن استطعت إليه سبيال

!قال: صدقت . فعجبنا له يسأله ويصدقه

HADITH JIBRIL

AND SAID: "O MUHAMMAD! INFORM ME ABOUT ISLAM." THE MESSENGER OF ALLAH (ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص) REPLIED: "ISLAM IS THAT YOU SHOULD TESTIFY THAT THERE IS NO DEITY WORTHY OF WORSHIP EXCEPT ALLAH AND THAT MUHAMMAD IS HIS MESSENGER (ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص), THAT YOU

SHOULD PERFORM SALAH (RITUAL PRAYER), PAY THE ZAKAH, FAST DURING RAMADAN, AND PERFORM HAJJ (PILGRIMAGE) TO THE HOUSE (THE KA`BAH AT MAKKAH), IF YOU CAN FIND A WAY TO IT (OR FIND THE

MEANS FOR MAKING THE JOURNEY TO IT)." HE SAID: "YOU HAVE SPOKEN THE TRUTH." WE WERE ASTONISHED AT HIS THUS

QUESTIONING HIM (ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص) AND THEN TELLING HIM THAT HE WAS RIGHT,

HADITH JIBRIL

BUT HE WENT ON TO SAY, "INFORM ME ABOUT IMAN (FAITH)." HE (THE PROPHET) ANSWERED, "IT IS THAT

YOU BELIEVE IN ALLAH AND HIS ANGELS AND HIS BOOKS AND HIS MESSENGERS AND IN THE LAST DAY, AND IN FATE (QADAR), BOTH IN ITS GOOD AND IN ITS

EVIL ASPECTS." HE SAID, "YOU HAVE SPOKEN THE TRUTH."

ANSWERED, "IT IS THAT YOU SHOULD SERVE ALLAH AS THOUGH YOU COULD SEE HIM,

FOR THOUGH YOU CANNOT SEE HIM YET HE SEES YOU."

ائل؟  .ثم قال: يا عمر أتدري من الس .قلت: اهلل ورسوله أعلم

[قال: فإنه جبريل أتاكم يعلمكم دينكم ". [رواه مسلم

HADITH JIBRIL

HE SAID, "INFORM ME ABOUT THE HOUR." HE (THE PROPHET) SAID, "ABOUT THAT THE ONE QUESTIONED KNOWS NO MORE THAN THE

QUESTIONER." SO HE SAID, "WELL, INFORM ME ABOUT ITS SIGNS." HE SAID, "THEY ARE THAT THE SLAVE-GIRL WILL GIVE BIRTH TO HER MISTRESS AND THAT YOU WILL SEE THE BAREFOOTED ONES, THE

NAKED, THE DESTITUTE, THE HERDSMEN OF THE SHEEP (COMPETING WITH EACH OTHER) IN RAISING LOFTY BUILDINGS." THEREUPON THE

MAN WENT OFF. I WAITED A WHILE, AND THEN HE (THE PROPHET) SAID, "O `UMAR, DO YOU KNOW WHO THAT QUESTIONER WAS?" I REPLIED,

"ALLAH AND HIS MESSENGER KNOW BETTER." HE SAID, "THAT WAS JIBRIL. HE CAME TO TEACH YOU YOUR RELIGION." [MUSLIM]

SOME WISDOMS FROM THIS HADITH

1. THE PROPHET PBUH SAID THAT THIS IS THE DEEN

2. EVERY MUSLIM IS NOT A MU’MIN3. IHSAN IS NOT AMASSING THE

ADORNMENTS OF THIS WORLDLY LIFE4. NOT TEACHING ONE’S CHILDREN

IHSAN WILL BE A CAUSE FOR US BEING DEPRIVED OF IHSAN IN OUR RELATIONSHIP WITH OUR CHILDREN

5. THE LOSS OF IHSAN IS A SIGN OF THE HOUR

The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said:

Have taqwa (fear) of Allah wherever you may be, and follow up a bad deed with a good deed which will wipe it out, and behave well towards

the people.Tirmidhi

إن اهلل مع الذين اتقوا والذين هم محسنونTruly, Allah is with those who fear Him (keep

their duty unto Him), and those who are Muhsinun

Surah An-Nahl v.128

TAQWA AND IHSAN

WHAT IS REQUIRED IN ADDITION TO TAQWA FOR ANY ACT TO BE

CLASSIFIED AS IHSAN

1. SINCERITY - IKHLAS

2. BEAUTIFUL - AHSAN - DOING THINGS IN A GRACEFUL AND ATTRACTIVE MANNER

3. COMPLETE - KAMIL - HAVING ALL THE NECESSARY PARTS

4. CORRECT - SALIH - DOING PERMISSIBLE THINGS IN THE CORRECT WAY

CONDITIONS FOR AN ACTION TO BE CLASSIFIED AS IHSAN

EVERY PERMISSIBLE ACTION IF DONE WITH

IHSAN BECOMES AN ACT BELOVED TO ALLAH, AND EVERY ACTION INCLUDING ACTS OF DEVOTION DONE

WITHOUT IHSAN ARE NULLIFIED AND DISLIKED

BY ALLAH

PRAYER, FASTING AND CHARITY ARE FRUITLESS IF DONE WITHOUT IHSAN AND IHKLAS

Abu Hurayra said, "The Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, was asked, 'Messenger of Allah! A certain woman prays in the night, fasts in the day, acts and gives sadaqa, but injures her neighbours with her tongue.' The Messenger of Allah S.A.W. said, 'There is no good in her. She is one of the people of the Fire.'

They said, 'Another woman prays only the prescribed prayers and gives a little in sadaqa and does not injure

anyone.' The Messenger of Allah S.A.W. said, 'She is one of the people of the Garden.’" Bukhari in Adab Al

Mufrad

THERE IS NO IHSAN IN MARTYRDOM WITHOUT IKHLAS

On the authority of Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), who said:

I heard the Messenger of Allah (ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص) say: The first of people against whom judgment will be pronounced on the Day of Resurrection will be a man who died a martyr. He will be

brought and Allah will make known to him His favours and he will recognize them. [ The Almighty] will say: And what did you do about them? He will say: I fought for you until I died a martyr. He will say: You have lied - you did but fight that it might be said [of you]: He is courageous. And so it was said. Then he will be ordered to be dragged along on

his face until he is cast into Hell-fire.(It was related by Muslim by at-Tirmidhi and an-Nasa'i).

THERE IS NO IHSAN IN SEEKING KNOWLEDGE AND RECITING QUR’AN WITHOUT IKHLAS

[Another] will be a man who has studied [religious] knowledge and has taught it and who used to recite the Quran. He will be brought and Allah will make known to

him His favours and he will recognize them. [The Almighty] will say: And what did you do about them? He will say: I studied [religious] knowledge and I taught it and I recited the Quran for Your sake. He will say: You

have lied - you did but study [religious] knowledge that it might be said [of you]: He is learned. And you recited the Quran that it might be said [of you]: He is a reciter. And so it was said. Then he will be ordered to be dragged

along on his face until he is cast into Hell-fire.(It was related by Muslim by at-Tirmidhi and an-Nasa'i).

THERE IS NO IHSAN IN CHARITY IF DONE WITHOUT IKHLAS

[Another] will be a man whom Allah had made rich and to whom He had given all kinds of wealth. He will

be brought and Allah will make known to him His favours and he will recognize them. [The Almighty] will say: And what did you do about them? He will

say: I left no path [untrodden] in which You like money to be spent without spending in it for Your

sake. He will say: You have lied - you did but do so that it might be said [of you]: He is open-handed. And so it was said. Then he will be ordered to be

dragged along on his face until he is cast into Hell-fire. It was related by Muslim

WHAT LEADS TO JANNAH

عن أبي هريرة، قال سئل رسول اهلل صلى اهلل عليه وسلم عن أكثر ما يدخل الناس الجنة فقال " تقوى اهلل وحسن الخلق " . وسئل عن أكثر ما يدخل الناس

النار فقال " الفم والفرجAbu Hurairah narrated that the Messenger of Allah was

asked about that for which people are admitted into Paradise the most, so he said:

"Taqwa of Allah, and good character." And he was asked about that for which people are admitted into the Fire the

MERCY HAS COMMANDED US TO WHAT BENEFITS US

AN OBEDIENT HUMAN IS THE EMBODIMENT OF IHSAN

لقد خلقنا اإلنسان في أحسن تقويم

Verily, We created man of the best stature (mould),

60. Surah At-Tin, Verse 4:

الذين يتبعون الرسول النبي األمي الذي يجدونه مكتوبا عندهم في التوراة واإلنجيل يأمرهم باملعروف وينهاهم عن املنكر ويحل

لهم الطيبات ويحرم عليهم الخبائث ويضع عنهم إصرهم واألغالل التي كانت عليهم فالذين آمنوا به وعزروه ونصروه واتبعوا النور

الذي أنزل معه أولئك هم املفلحون

Those who follow the Messenger, the Prophet who can neither read nor write (i.e. Muhammad SAW) whom they find written with them in the Taurat , he commands them for Al-Ma'ruf and forbids them from Al-Munkar he allows them as lawful At-Taiyibat, and prohibits them

as unlawful Al-Khaba'ith, he releases them from their heavy burdens (of Allah's Covenant), and from the fetters (bindings) that were upon them. So those who believe in him (Muhammad SAW), honour him,

help him, and follow the light (the Quran) which has been sent down with him, it is they who will be successful.

IHSAN IS WHAT WE HAVE BEEN COMMANDED TO AND IT IS ONLY FOR OUR BENEFIT

Surah Al-Isra, Verse 7:

إن أحسنتم أحسنتم ألنفسكم وإنأسأتم فلها

(And We said): "If you do good, you do good for your ownselves, and if you do

evil (you do it) against yourselves."

IHSAN IS FOR BENEFIT OF THE DOER

MAN HAS BEEN GIVEN THE ABILITY TO AFFECT MATTER THROUGH THE FREQUENCY

OF HIS HEART

MAN HAS BEEN GIVEN THE ABILITY TO AFFECT MATTER THROUGH HIS

INTENTION

HUMAN SPEECH AFFECTS MATTER

MAN AFFECTS AND IS AFFECTED BY SIGHT, SPEECH AND SOUND

THE REWARD OF THE MUHSIN IS IHSAN IN THIS WORLD AND THE HEREAFTER

قل يا عباد الذين آمنوا اتقوا ربكم للذين أحسنوا فيذه الدنيا حسنة وأرض اهلل واسعة إنما يوفى ه

ابرون أجرهم بغير حساب الصSay: "O My slaves who believe, be afraid of your Lord (Allah)

and keep your duty to Him. Good is (the reward) for those who do good in this world, and Allah's earth is spacious!

Only those who are patient shall receive their rewards in full, without reckoning."
