IHM INSIDER Interviews

Interview with Mr. Power By: Newspaper Staff

Q. If you had one word to describe IHM what would it be? A. Excellence

Q. When did you decide to become a teacher, and why did you choose this field? What did you do before you became a teacher? A. I enjoyed tutoring high school students when I was in college and graduate school but did not complete teacher certification until many years later. I have worked in the publishing industry in New York, university administration and education services, and corporate human resources in Chicago and San Francisco. I have also been writing short films since 2003, working with actors and other filmmakers. Q. What do you like to do during your free time? A. Enjoy walks and other excursions with my wife and son, jogging in Golden Gate Park, writing, cooking, eating and listening to jazz.

Q. What is your favorite movie? A. I maintain that works of art, especially collaborative works such as films and theatrical productions, are properly assessed on the basis of multiple criteria, and I thereby hold non in the position of favorite. But, examples of brilliant execution abound, such as the Coen Brothers’ 1989 production Miller’s Crossing. Q. What is your favorite book? A. Wally Lamb’s I Know this much is True. Q. If you could live anywhere, in the world, where would it be? A. Lisbon, Portugal. My wife and I had a wonderful honeymoon while visiting.

IHM was successful in raising money for our school through our annual Jogathon. It was a day of health to include healthy eating displays and presentations in St. Michael’s hall. Fun, sports drills for the students were conducted and sponsored by Lagarza. Thanks to all who participated and help make this event a success.

Every year IHM does Jump Rope for Heart on their Day of Service. K-8th grade donate many things. Kindergartners made cat toys for the ASPCA. They put catnip and stuffing inside a sock. The 1st graders bought books and walked to the Belmont Library to donate the books. The 2nd graders recycled bottles, cans, etc. They traded them in for money and donated the money. They also donated coloring books, crayons and decorated bags to put it in. The 3rd and 5th graders donated books to the St. Francis center. The 4th graders made bags to put all sorts of art supplies for the Catholic Charities Counseling program. This program provides free counseling and uses art and play therapy with children. The 6th graders made cards and games and for the senior center in San Carlos. The 7th and 8th graders donated diapers, baby wipes and more for newborns. At 1:30 the whole school went to the upper yard to jump rope for our own hearts.

IHM Students enjoyed the home opener Stanford baseball game. Students were able to meet the players and participate in games events. Seventh grader, Colby Schmidt, threw out the first pitch and Jared Lyman was successful in announcing batters during the sixth inning. IHM students who were able to attend had great fun.

Directed by Mrs. Teri Marconi, 36 IHM 3rd Graders and 24 4th Graders joined together on Thursday, March 20th to perform "Spread Some Sunshine" by Donna Amorosia, their song selection for the 26th Archdiocesan Choral Fest at Riordan High School in San Francisco. When asked by the Festival Committee why we chose this song we wrote "because it combines a cheerful, snappy, little tune with great lyrics that remind us that we have the power within us to spread joy and happiness at all times wherever we are through our actions to others, and in doing so, we can create a better place for everyone!" Mrs. Merconi

24 schools from the Archdiocese participated in the Choral Fest. 12 in the am session and 12 in the afternoon session.

Special thanks to all the parents and grandparents who came to support our students!

The sixth annual Scholastic Book Fair closed on Sunday, March 23, 2014! We sold over $5000.00 in books! IHM School students and families collected over $109.00 for the All for Books program. That resulted in more than a dozen books purchased at the Fair that will be donated to the Saint Francis Center in Redwood City, courtesy of IHM. Winner of the "How Many Beans in the Jar?" contest was first grader Justin Jamison. Justin won $10.00 Scholastic Dollars, which he spent at the Book Fair. Janet Hourigan, Mom to Conor in the 7th grade, made a delicious cake for our Thursday Family Fiesta. Thanks to Father Howell, Mrs. Grosey, Mrs. Brazil, Mrs. Smith, and all the teachers for their support. Special thanks go to the parents and students for attending the Book Fair and buying all those books! The success of the Book Fair is dependent upon the volunteers who give of their free time. My thanks to all the adults and students who made this happen. Mrs. Kanzaki

The Lego Movie came out on Febuary 7, 2014. The characters are Lego people and they live in a world of Legos. The movie is about a Lego person named Emmet who goes on a crazy adventure with some awesome people such as Batman, Wonder Woman, and various Star Wars characters. It’s funny, well done and action-packed. Auriel Zhou says,” I loved it and my favorite character was Unikitty! (unicorn cat)”. Will Emmet succeed in his mission to stop President Business? Watch the Lego movie to find out!

LEGO Movie

A boy named Roy Eberhardt is used to kids bulling him. His family has lived all over the United States, and finally ends up staying in Florida. Roy discovers that Florida bullies are the same as any other bully anywhere. Roy finds himself being bullied by the hulking Dana Matheson. If Dana had never shoved Roy against the window, Roy might have never spotted the running boy. And the running boy is the most interesting thing he has ever seen. That running boy was running AWAY from the school bus. He had no backpack, no books, and no shoes! Sensing a mystery, Roy follows the boy on his trail. This trail will introduce him to intriguing Floridian creatures: alligators swimming in the latrine, a grumpy pancake foreman, digging owls, a class clown, a rebellious boy, a big soccer jock, and several poisonous snakes with sparkly tails. Life in Florida is looking weird!

Bluetooth is a communication method that allows devices to connect remotely through the air. Blue tooth gloves are an awesome step in technology. In the left glove there is the blue tooth handset. In the thumb there is a speaker and in the pinky there is a small microphone so now you can use that famous gesture for real. The battery life is 10 days and 20 hours of conversation. You can purchase these gloves for $21.99 on eBay. To answer calls push the calls button and to end push end calls button. The gloves work with IOs, Blackberry, Windows phone, and Android. You can use the gloves up to 40 feet from your phone. With these gloves you can be fashionable and have fun.

After a long, four year wait, the time for winter Olympics has come again. This time located in Sochi, Russia which is located in the Krasnodar Region in Russia's south. It is situated between the Black Sea and the Caucasus Mountains just north of Russia's border with Georgia. Winter Olympics include fifteen amazing events. In alphabetical order, they are Alpine Skiing, Biathlon,Bobsleigh, Cross Country Skiing, Curling, Figure Skating, Freestyle Skating, Ice Hockey, Luge, Nordic Combined, Short Track Speed Skating, Skeleton, Snowboard, and Speed Skating. The amazing Olympic athletes of the world will be competing in 11 newly made arenas. These arenas include Adler Area, Ice Cube Curling Centre, Shayba Arena, Bolshoi Ice Dome, Iceberg Skating Palace, Fisht Olympic Stadium, RusSki Gorki Jumping Centre, Rosa Khuter Extreme Park, Laura Cross-Country Ski and Biathlon Center, Rosa Khutor Alpine Centre, and Sanki Sliding Centre. On February 23, 2014, the Sochi Olympics officially came to an end. Russia finished on top with a total of 33 medals. They had 13 gold medals, 11 silver medals, and 9 bronze medals. The Norway came in second place with 26 medals. With 11 gold medals, 5 silver models, and 10 bronze medals Norway performed amazing! In third place, was Canada with 25 medals. They had 10 gold medals, 10 silver medals, and only 5 bronze medals. Sadly, the United States came in fourth place with an amazing number of 28 medals. However, they had only 9 gold medals, 7 silver medals, and a towering 12 bronze medals. The Sochi Olympics were a time of ups and downs. Hopefully, in the future, we will see the same level of amazing collaboration between countries.

When I Am 100 Years Old Project

Second grade did a project called “When I am 100 years old”. It’s about what they look like in 100 years. Also, they need to find out how many years before they turn 100. They also will have to see how big of a family they will have and what technology will be like in 100 years. I interviewed second graders and they both said, “I liked doing the face the most”. 3rd Grade Sandwich Book Report

The 3rd Graders read a chapter book and made a sandwich- based report. The sandwich included 2 pieces of bread, lettuce, tomato, meat, cheese, mayonnaise, and onion. They described numerous things about the book. Some examples are a summary and a part that made them happy. They had fun doing this interesting and creative report! By: Kyra Martin-Spencer 4th Grade
