“There have never been more demands

placed upon healthcare organisations

than there are today. Populations are

growing and aging. Chronic diseases

are becoming more prevalent. Patient

expectations are rising.

Healthcare leaders and managers face

daunting strategic and operational

challenges and need specific skills

and capabilities in order to overcome

them. But because healthcare is such a

specialised field of management, generic

business and management training

courses rarely meet their needs.

IHLM therefore combines established

management theories with newly

published, evidence-based research

to create content that is specific to the

healthcare context. We deliver it in ways

that are both emotionally engaging and

immediately practical – empowering

participants to transform their team or

organisation’s performance, as well as

their personal impact, from the moment

they leave the classroom.”

Custom Programmes

IHLM work in partnership with healthcare organisations of all sizes, in both the public

and private sectors, to design and deliver learning solutions that are tailored to their

unique needs and have a measurable impact on the quality of their care. We do this

by:

• Understanding our client’s aspirations and the strategic objectives they are

striving to achieve – whether it is improving quality and productivity, enhancing

patient experience, or preparing the next generation of leaders.

• Defining the knowledge, skills, behaviours and habits that are needed to achieve

these goals or to transform performance.

• Co-designing a programme – which can be either qualification or non-

qualification bearing – engaging expert faculty members, and agreeing learning

methodologies and module content.

• Identifying the projects and activities that will be the ‘live’ vehicles for programme

members to apply their learning and embed it into day-to-day practice.

• Agreeing individual personal development plans with all programme members

and supporting them with 1:1 coaching and mentoring between modules.

• Evaluating the impact of the programme through both quantitative and

qualitative module feedback, team and line manager feedback, and

“The Royal Hospital is Oman’s largest tertiary-level, acute-care hospital providing state-of-the-art services in a variety of specialties. We are ambitious to build up the capabilities of both our frontline and departmental leaders, not only through training and education, but through systems and policies which support leadership development and ensure sustainability. The hospital has benefited greatly from a close, long-term partnership with IHLM – with whom we’ve achieved some remarkable milestones in building the hospital’s leadership capacity.

Our collaboration began with a diagnosis of our needs through 1:1 interviews and focus groups, leading to a consultancy report to the senior leaders on findings and recommendations.

This informed the creation of a leadership competency model and the design of our “Future Leaders” programme through which over a hundred participants have been supported to develop their leadership skills and measurably improve the performance of their unit or department.

IHLM have also enabled us to independently run our own programmes by training internal trainers in subjects such as emotional intelligence, patient communication, coaching and mentoring, patient flow management, and effective teamworking.”

“After over fifteen years as a consultant general and vascular surgeon in the UK, I was appointed as the Medical Director of Amina Hospital in the United Arab Emirates. My main challenge there is to nurture a culture that is different from a lot of the hospitals around it.

Attending the High-Performance Healthcare Leadership programme was particularly useful. One of the early topics we explored was about learning to become a good leader. I’ve discovered that you can do that through experience – which is reflecting on your own mistakes and your own successes as well; through exposure – which is watching others making mistakes but also taking the right decisions; and the third component is, of course, through education.

As a result of the programme my thoughts on what I need to achieve in my healthcare organisation are more focused. It’s now clear in my mind that my first task is to provide a superb service to our patients and to get my colleagues subscribing to the same idea.

I would definitely recommend this programme and I will definitely be encouraging my colleagues to attend it.”
