According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), almost 30 people die each day in accidents involving an alcohol-impaired driver; additionally, drivers with previous driving while intoxicated (DWI) convictions are at particularly high risk for involvement in fatal crashes. However, the CDC also notes that ignition interlock devices–such as Intoxalock, manufactured by Consumer Safety Technology, LLC (CST)–can help with this widespread problem both by testing for the presence of alcohol in those convicted of DWI, and if necessary by limiting the vehicle’s ability to operate.

Breath-alcohol monitoring ignition interlock devices such as Intoxalock use a breath sample to identify blood alcohol content. According to the CDC, interlocks installed in the vehicles of drivers with prior DWI or drunken driving convictions result in an approximately 70% reduction in impaired driving arrest rates. While most ignition interlock users do have prior DWI violations, an increasing number of individuals and businesses are recognizing the valuable safety benefits of the device and opting for voluntary installation.

The use of ignition interlocks or car breathalyzers

represents just one step towards reducing drunk

driving fatalities. Providing substance abuse

treatment for DWI offenders, as well as raising

community awareness of the risks of alcohol-

impaired driving, also contribute to safer driving

choices.
