Driven to distraction

by Kate Edser

WHY I should think thataggressive driving is confined onlyto peak commuting periods I donot know. I was shaken from thisnonsensical persuasion fairly lateone evening last week whilejourneying between Bradley Stokeand Staple Hill, via Hambrook andthe ring road.

Most of Bradley Stoke is a30mph zone, which a great manydrivers seem inclined to ignore. Some, including a particular silverGolf estate driver, also want toremind all other road users thatthey consider said speed limit tobe incredibly annoying.

His exasperation manifesteditself quite obviously. He zoomedup so close to my rear end that Ilost sight of his headlights. There

he stayed for what seemed like aneternity until he was forced toadmit that on-coming traffic meantthere was no hope of overtaking. But he did not drop back to asensible distance – he was still tooclose for comfort.

At the first opportunity, heswerved to my outside and backagain while we approached theHambrook junction with the ringroad, just in case I had not noticedhe was in a tearing hurry.

As the traffic lights turned greenin our favour, he floored it andovertook on the dual carriagewaytowards Downend in a cloud ofnon-too-pleasant fumes. Great, Ithought, good riddance.

Unfortunately, he was headingmy way at the next roundaboutand was further enraged – Inoticed the clenched-jaw glances –when a red light meant he had tosuffer my presence next to himagain while we waited for green.

Unable to bear the idea that hecould not get ahead of me, theGolf driver ignored the red lightand began to crawl forward until hewas perhaps a car length ahead.Somehow I believe he thought thiswould raise my hackles. Not a bit. Iwould be glad to get rid of him.

So, as green appeared and heshot off at high revs, high speedand, no doubt, high bloodpressure, I continued my merryway and soon turned off and away.

The last I saw, the Golf driverwas being held up by some otherlaw-abiding driver. That raised asmall smile. What drives you to distraction onBristol’s roads? [email protected] with yourthoughts.

Range Rover Sport

If you thought the RangeRover Sport was just aDiscovery in posh togs, you need to take a lookat this latest generationmodel. It’s somethingquite special as AndyEnright re p o r t s .

THE formula for the first gen-eration Range Rover Sportwas simple. Take a LandRover Discovery, drape it inRange Rover lookalike body

panels, tack quite a bit on to theasking price and watch the ordersroll in. And roll in they did.

Introduced back in 2005 and weath-ering the worst years of the recession,2012 was its second best year for sales,so the formula was clearly working. So what has Land Rover done with itsreplacement? Completely changedthe fundamentals, that’s what.

There are definite hints of theEvoque about its glasshouse and thestyling is more muscular and athleticthan before, with a more fashionablewheel-at-each-corner stance.

Designer Gerry McGovern callsthis generation Sport the “Po r s ch e911 of SUVs” because of its superiorhandling prowess.

If you wanted a sharp steer fromyour sports utility vehicle, you werealways better off choosing a PorscheCayenne or a BMW X5. This timeround, Land Rover has really pulledout all the stops.

Shaving more than 400kg off theweight is obviously going to be amassive advantage.

More focused air suspensionprovides up to 115mm of regularmovement, from the lowest 50mm

Test drive The mostexciting SUV in years

Some Mercedes models are the epitome ofon-road luxury. Others are almost unrivalledfor off-road prowess. And then there’s onewhich claims to offer the best of both: theGL-Class. This is one of the very few super-luxury SUVs that can seat seven adults.

The X5 is the 4x4 that never put a footwrong. Think about it. There’s never been aweak model, much less a bad generation. Thisthird iteration on the theme improvesefficiency, practicality and responsiveness andyou wouldn’t expect anything less really. It’sall change but business as usual.

The Cayenne’s task is looking tougher thanit did in 2002. Porsche now has the Panameraoffering an alternative kind of four-doorpracticality. In the UK, luxury 4x4s have takencriticism for their perceived environmentalcosts. Porsche’s solution was to improve thecar across the board.

Price: £47,390-£89,3240-62 mph: 4.7-7.6

Max speed: 137-173Co2 (g/km): 189-270

setting to the standard off-roadheight.

The +35mm intermediate settingmeans that the off-road mode canremain available at much higherspeeds (80km/h up from 50km/h)than was possible before, which isvaluable in terrain with long, rutteddirt roads.

The electric power steering offers alighter feel and a choice of twofull-time 4WD systems is offered.

One set-up will suit the minority ofowners who’ll be venturing off road, providing a two-speed transfer casewith low-range option, plus afront/rear 50/50 percent defaulttorque split and 100 percent lockingc ap ab i l i t y.

The other system is designed forthose whose off piste use of this carwill be slight. Here, the 4x4 layoutfeatures a single-speed transfer casewith a Torsen differential.

In this case, a default front-rear

torque split of 42/58 percent is de-signed to provide a rear-wheel drivebias for optimum road driving dy-n a m i c s.

Engines? You get a choice of two – asupercharged 5.0-litre 510PS V8 pet-rol unit and a 3.0-litre 292PS SDV6diesel.

You can also talk to your dealerabout a 3.0-litre 258PS TDV6, a highperformance 4.4-litre 339PS SDV8diesel engine and a diesel Hybridmodel. All petrol and diesel enginesin the Range Rover Sport are pairedwith a ZF 8-speed automatic gear-b ox .

T here’s nothing too surprisingabout the Range Rover Sport’s ap-pearance. It’s good looking, neatlydetailed, very eye-catching and a sig-nificantly longer wheelbase than be-fore (up by 178mm) provides muchmore room inside.

The wheelbase isn’t that far off afull-fat Range Rover but shorter over-

hangs at the front and rear, a moresharply raked windscreen and a slop-ing roofline distinguish this model.Buyers can choose from 19, 20, 21 or22-inch alloy wheels.

The Sport’s interior features typ-ically Land Rover strong, architec-tural shapes, this time mixed witheven cleaner surface treatments, fin-ished with soft-touch surfaces.

The sporting cues come courtesy of

a smaller, thicker-rimmed steeringwheel and deeply bolstered seats witha lower hip point than you mightexpect.

A neatly integrated third row, oc-casional 5+2 seating package can bespecified. These powered seats leave aflat floor with no loss of boot spaceand are split 50/50.

Value is a tough judgment to makeon this one. The Range Rover hasmarched inexorably upmarket andLand Rover could have been excusedfor making the Sport commensur-ately more expensive, but prices forthe SDV6 models range in the £60,000to £75,000 bracket and the TDV6 willmake entry to Range Rover Sportownership a little more accessiblewith its asking price of just over£50,000.

The Supercharged Autobiography, with its 5.0-litre petrol V8 tops therange priced at just over £80,000, justover £5,000 more than the outgoingc a r.

No premium car can do without anintegrated connectivity packagethese days and Land Rover’s Con-nected technology allows the driverto check the status of the vehicle viaan app installed on their smartphoneand also provides support featuressuch as Stolen Vehicle Tracking,Emergency Call and Land Rover As-sist Call.

A high bandwidth wi-fi hotspot canbe installed in the vehicle so thatpassengers can use the internet andget the best data connection for theirsmartphones or tablets.

Other technical highlights includean optional colour head-up display, adigital camera system which sup-ports Lane Departure Warning,

Traffic Sign Recognition and Auto-matic High Beam Assist.

A unique innovation on the Sport isthe Wade Sensing feature thatprovides depth information whendriving through water.

When the very first Range RoverSport was launched, buyers werefaced with a choice; reasonable per-formance or reasonable economy. You couldn’t have both.

How times have changed. Acrossthe range, acceleration times for the0-60mph dash start from five seconds, while fuel consumption is cut by up to

24 per cent and CO2 emissions startas low as 194g/km. Wait for the dieselhybrid model and that figure falls to169g/km.

Still, it’s worth remembering thatany large SUV is going to shed asignificant amount of its new value inde preciation.

That the Range Rover Sport is amassively superior car to its pre-decessor is not up for debate. If you’reanything but the retiring type andwant one of the most exciting SUVswe ’ve seen for some time, the de-cision just got a whole lot easier.

The RangeRover Sport - ahigh bandwidthwi-fi hotspotcan be installedso passengerscan use theinternet and getthe best dataconnection forsmartphones ortablets

HAGGLING over the price of a car is an es-sential skill that could save you a lot of money.Brits are characterised as poor hagglers, sohere are a few tips to help you become aneffective negotiator and clinch a great deal

Know the market – Find out what similarcars are going for, set your price and thennegotiate to that point. Auction websites are agood source of pricing information.

Start low - Let the seller negotiate you up toa price you’re both happy with.

Do your homework - Know exactly what itis you’re looking to buy and make sure youunderstand the terms and conditions ofwhatever warranty is included.

Before you start negotiations, make sureyou’re aware of what sort of discount thedealer is likely to offer and then compare it tothe corresponding What Car? Target Price.Brokers, internet companies and carsupermarkets also publish price informationonline.

Timing - Many car industry sales targets areset on a monthly basis, so if you make yourvisit towards the end of the month, you willalmost certainly find it easier to squeeze agood discount out of the dealer.

Don’t be ‘matey’ - A friendly atmospherecould lull you into thinking you’re getting agreat deal, when in fact the ‘mateyness’ isbeing used to ‘work’ you into a weakerposition. Adopt a professional and detachedapproach, stay poker-faced, and keep calm. If

you look like a serious buyer who’s ready todo a deal, a decent salesperson shouldrespond. If you’re getting close to a deal, saythat you’ll buy a particular car at a particularprice – but only if they agree to that pricethere and then, and in writing.

Walk away - Don’t be afraid to leave if youcan’t reach a deal that makes you happy.T h e re ’s always another car, always anotherdeal.

Never pay more for a car than you have to.Play the game – and play it to win.

Fiat goes allrugged withthe Trekking

The chunky Fiat 500L is a larger and verydifferent proposition to the hugelysuccessful 500 city car it was spun from. Some felt though, that it could do with abit more attitude. Such a thing is servedup by the more rugged-looking Trekkingversion, a variant aiming to help thismodel begin to forge its own identity.

A rugged Fiat 500? Has the worldgone mad? Fiat doesn’t think soand believes the 500L Trekkingmore than justifies its existence.Andy Enright re p o r t s .

FI AT ’S 500 city car is one of thevery best retro revivals, offeringa modern take on a familiarshape, while blending exactlythe right combination of old and

new design features. In a bid to emulate what MINI had

done in creating a family of cars spunoff a familiar theme, Fiat created the500L, a bigger and more spacious 500.That characteristic domed roof lookwas lost and the 500L looked like ageneric mini-MPV that had some Fiat500 design cues grafted on to it.

As a result, sales have been slow topick up. Beneath the hype, though, liesa very decent car and in beefed-upTrekking form, is a more self-confidenttake on the 500L theme.

The Trekking gets the same enginechoice as the rest of the 500L range, which means a 93bhp 1.4-litre petrol, while there’s also a version of the re-volutionary two-cylinder TwinAir en-gine, in this case generating 104bhp,20bhp up on the 500. Diesel customersare catered for with a very good 1.3-litreMultijet with 84bhp. This will make60mph from standstill in 11.3 seconds.

The key feature of the Trekking is itsTraction +, Fiat’s clever traction con-trol system that improves traction overharsh and slippery terrain.

The Trekking aims to project a moredynamic image than the rather sub-urban 500L and as such, gets model-spe-cific front and rear bumpers, side skirtsand mouldings, air intakes, a skid-plateand standard fog lights. It’s offered in achoice of seven paint finishes, the sig-

nature colour being Hip Hop Yellow. The interior features fabric seat up-

holstery with eco-leather inserts. Cus-tomers can choose between twodifferent combinations: magnesio greyfabric with brown leather inserts orblack fabric with white inserts.

As with the standard 500L, there’s arespectable amount of space inside.

The big benefit indoors is a slidingrear seat system. Slide the seats for-ward and there’s still a reasonableamount of leg room. The 414-litresquare boot features side cubbies, athree-position floor and pop-out bagh o l d e r s.

The rear seats can tumble forwardsand the front passenger seat back canalso fold flat.

There are no specific trim levelsoffered with the 500L Trekking, so thatmakes the pricing relatively easy to getto grips with. The range opens at justover £17,000 for a 1.4 Trekking petrol, with diesel options kicking off at a tadover £18,500.

This is the first car in the Fiat rangeto provide City Brake Control as stand-ard. It is designed to reduce the effectsof low-speed collision in traffic.

By sending out laser impulses andregistering how quickly they’re reflec-ted, City Brake Control can detect re-motely how far the car is fromo b s t a cl e s.

This information is gathered by asensor behind the windscreen whichthen transfers it to an electronic con-trol unit for processing. If the controlunit thinks the car is going to have a

collision and the driver isn’t doing any-thing to stop it, the brakes are applied. It operates at speeds between three and19mph.

The 500L Trekking’s good value up-front prices are matched by some verycompetitive economy and emissionsfigures. There have been some wellpublicised concerns about customereconomy figures coming nowhere nearthe published numbers for the TwinAirengine, but the 1.3-Multijet diesel is adifferent kettle of fish. With a littlemoderation, you might get within sniff-ing distance of the official 62.8mpg fig-ure. Its emissions are rated at117g/km.

Buyers also get the choice of a Du-alogic transmission on this modelwhich reduces emissions to just105g/km and increases fuel economy to70.6mpg. If funds are a little tighter, theentry-level 1.4 petrol units gets 45.6mpgand emits 145g/km.

It’ll be a personal decision from therewhether you see spending an additional£1,500 to get the TwinAir, with itsclaimed 58.9mpg and 112g/km as goodvalue for money.

The Trekking model distances itselffrom the original 500 city car and assuch seems to justify its inclusion inthe Fiat range a little more confidently. The mark-up of £700 over the standard500L doesn’t seem at all unreasonablegiven the extra equipment.

The 500L didn’t get off to the easieststart to life, but the Trekking wouldseem to suggest that this model is justhitting its stride.

Risk-taking driversputting lives at risk

A BRITISH team has set a new worldrecord for driving from London toCape Town, making the 10,000 milejourney in just 10 days, three hoursand 16 minutes.

Driving a British-made Land RoverDiscovery, right, experienced endur-ance rally drivers Robert Belcher, 58,and Stephen Cooper, 53, broke theprevious record, set in February 2013by more than 10 hours.

The pair arrived at the Mount Nel-son Hotel in Cape Town – a landmarkstart and finish point for this journey– on Monday, October 14.

They had left London at on Friday,October 4, from the RAC Club on PallMall.

The attempt was sponsored by War-ranty Direct and was raising moneyand awareness for charity FarmAfrica (www.far mafrica.org). Dona-tions can still be made through thewebsite – w w w. l o n d o n c a p e t o w n re -c o rd . c o. u k .

On the mammoth drive, the duocame up against heavy rain and thun-derstorms in Tunisia, a tense bordercrossing into Libya, a fuel shortage inEgypt and giant potholes inEthiopia.

Their vehicle, a 2005 Land RoverDiscovery 3 powered by a 2.7 TDV6diesel engine, held up to a gruellingschedule of being driven almost 24hours a day across a variety of ter-rain including hundreds of miles ofbumpy and potholed dirt roads.

Largely unmodified, the 4x4 hadbeen given sump and undercarriageguards, chunkier tyres and four

high-intensity lamps mounted on theroof to better prepare it for the toughdriving conditions.

Extra fuel tanks also provided arange of around 1,200 miles betweenre f u e l l i n g .

Only one fault developed with thecar during the trip.

After hitting a bump in the road, the car’s brake warning light cameon, accompanied by a continuousalar m.

The fault was cleared after hittinganother bump a few hours later.

Driver Robert Belcher said: “W h ata journey. We’re exhausted but ab-

OVERCONFIDENCE and compla-cency is leading to widespread il-legal risk-taking on roads, warnsBrake, the road safety charity, andDirect Line.

Research, published this month, shows that, while almost all drivers(99 per cent) believe they are com-paratively safe, two thirds (69 percent) admit putting others at riskby breaking traffic laws.

As a result, the two organ-isations are urging drivers tosign Brake’s Pledge to help pre-vent the devastating crashes thatoften result from risky law-breakingat the wheel.

Brake and Direct Line’s survey of 1,000drivers across the UK has also found: More than two thirds (69 per cent) admitbreaking traffic laws. A third (35 per cent) say they break laws

because they believe they can handle it, whileanother third (33 per cent) admit it’s down tonot paying attention. Only one per cent say they know they’re

taking risks, but do it anyway.Every day, five people are killed and63 seriously injured on UK roads.

The vast majority of crashes in-volve drivers’ risk-taking, andcould be prevented if motoristsstayed within speed limits, slowed for bends, bad weatherand in built-up areas, did not use

a phone at the wheel, and neverdrove on drink or drugs.Brake is also calling on govern-

ment to ensure there is a strong de-terrent against law-breaking, and that driverswho repeatedly flout the law are taken off theroad. It wants greater priority and funding forspecialist roads policing and action to tightenup the penalty points system so drivers whotot up 12 points or more can’t escape a ban bypleading “exceptional hardship”.

Julie Townsend, deputy chief executive,Brake, said: “It is deeply concerning so manydrivers break vital traffic laws, yet still be-lieve they are safe.

“Anyone who thinks they can handle speed-ing, using a phone at the wheel or drink-driv-ing is fooling themselves and taking anappalling chance with people’s lives.

“Traffic laws exist to protect people fromdeath and injury.

“We are calling on drivers to make Brake’sPledge to always drive safely and legally, tohelp reduce the number of people needlesslykilled and hurt on our roads.”

What a journey. We’reexhausted but absolutelyelated to have broken therecord and to have doneit so safely and smoothly– if you don’t count thehundreds of miles ofpotholes through centralAfrica that is.

AN analysis of 515,248 UK police force recordsobtained by consumer motoring champion Hon-estJohn.co.uk has revealed that cities in theNorth of England are the worst affected by carcrime, with Manchester topping the table.

Bristol, with 255 car-related crimes per 10,000vehicles, slots in at number 10 in the list.

Between October 2011 and September 2012, 505offences per 10,000 registered vehicles were re-ported in central Manchester.

This figure is four times the national averagefor car crime, which HonestJohn.co.uk calcu-lated as 121 offences per 10,000 vehicles.

West Yorkshire emerged as another car crimehotspot, with Bradford seeing an average of 457crimes per 10,000 vehicles, followed by Leedswith 420, Sheffield with 389, Newcastle with 318

and Liverpool with a rate of 287.London was third in the list, with a rate of 443

crimes per 10,000 vehicles. The research by HonestJohn.co.uk involved

examining thousands of records released by 42police forces, upon a Freedom of Informationrequest in addition to data that’s availablethrough police.uk.

The HonestJohn.co.uk Car Crime Census 2013allows motorists to find the car crime rate fortheir postcode.

The data reveals that 41 per cent of all offenceswere based on theft from a vehicle, making it themost common type of car crime in the UK. Thesecond most reported offence was criminal dam-age with 40 per cent of cars affected, followed bytheft of a car at 16 per cent.

Police data reveals worst car crime cities

CAR insurance provider Admiral hasfound that the main causes of roadrage are being cut up by drivers (67per cent), drivers not indicating (65per cent) and the general rudeness ofother motorists (61 per cent).

Driving too slowly (43 per cent) isseen as more annoying than drivingtoo fast (30 per cent). Nearly 1 in 10 (9per cent) have been threatened withphysical violence and over half (56per cent) of drivers questionedagreed that road users are generallyless courteous than five years ago.

Of the 3,120 drivers questioned byYouGov for the Admiral Survey of UKMotorists, nearly half (48 per cent)admitted to experiencing road rage, with almost a third (32 per cent) ofthese saying they get it more thanonce a week.

Over a fifth (21 per cent) of roadrage sufferers have argued with an-other motorist because of road ragewhile 36 per cent admitted it makesthem drive more aggressively. Almostone in ten (8 per cent) said they’vefollowed another driver as a result.

While both men and women getroad rage, men are more likely todrive aggressively, have arguments, follow drivers and make offensivegestures as a result of their rage.

Admiral spokesman, JamesCarnduff, said: “It’s bad enough let-ting yourself be annoyed by otherroad users, but following them oreven worse, reverting to violence isridiculous. Getting angry doesn’tachieve anything other than raisingyour blood pressure and negativelyimpacting your driving.”
