The score didn’t reflect the dominance of our performance but the 26 scoring shots to 13; We hit the post 5 times & had the ball in our forward 50 for the majority of the game. The boys worked hard on the track & in particular on their tackling so it was pleasing to see that aspect of their game improve so much. We had a contribution from all 22 of our players however special mention deserves to go to our hardnosed mid field all of who dominated for 4 quarters & gave our forwards lots of opportunities as well as our 3 ruckman who work hard & are improving each week. Congratulations to Declan Ryan & Josh Davis who made good contributions in their first game. We started the game well in the wet conditions and withstood a barrage from PAC. Lukas Gawkowski made a return to football and kicked two goals in the opening term to put us in front at the first break. Zen Rinaldo won the ball at stoppages all game keeping us ahead until the final term. Unfortunately, the strong aerial abilities of some of the PAC players was the difference and we lost the lead with only a few minutes to go. Despite this, it was a good performance from our boys. Football Year 10 Peter Hogan Scotch 1 SIC 7-8-50 def. Scotch 4-4-28

In wet conditions, Igs took on Scotch 1, their best year 10 team. Kicking into the wind in the first, we dominated play, despite Scotch kicking 3 goals to one. This set up the game for us as we kicked 6 goals to 1 in the following 3 qtrs. Carr and Jasper Davies were dominant over 4 qtrs in the middle and off half back, ably supported by Leydon, Centenara in ruck, Zollo and wingmen Scarpantoni and Clayton. The defence was solid, led by “The General”, Captain Tom Mercurio and Igs saw repeated “switch” attacks from him, Bradley, Hodges and the resting mids off the half back line. Blefari also contributed well, running hard and stepping up the pressure when we needed it in the third qtr as Scotch surged. Up forward, Hogan, Whitford, Keenihan and Nickels all presented well and worked hard in their defensive efforts. Best Players: Carr, Davies J, Leydon, Mercurio, Bradley Goals: Whitford 2, Hogan 2, Keenihan, Palmer, Scarpantoni

In wintery, slippery conditions, our boys assumed a win would take care of itself after our last game vs St Peters convincing win. We scored 2 goals late in the last quarter to snatch victory. We spoke about our attitude, for which most of the game lacked intensity, spirit and support. For each other. The boys did however respond late, when a loss was looking likely, so pleasing in this aspect. We talked about when things, get a little tough (not only footy, but in life) was the time to knuckles down and show our true character, which they did, so well done boys. Quite often training sessions reflect how you perform which on the weekend perhaps a representation of this. Best Players: Holt, Kelly, Maxwell, Emerson

What a fantastic team effort! This is what happens when we play four quarters of football – well done to all players. Our first experience of wet weather football and we adapted to the conditions very well. We were first to the ball, we kept pressure on our opponents and we worked hard all day. Given that we only had 15 players, with no bench, we maintained our intensity really well. There was no evidence of a team “gone missing”. Now we have the confidence to know what we can do, let’s hope the rest of the season continues to be a strong team effort. Goals: Eamonn 2, Francesco 2, Chris 2. E Pluribus Unum. Whilst it is accepted the young men might not necessarily know the interpretation of these words, there is little doubt they have clearly shown that they instinctively understand the concept. Wet weather football could be described as a different game but you could not tell this Saturday as the heavens opened. The young men continued to show their true strength by using every last member of the team to the awe of the spectators, which it must be noted, consisted of many more than just parents. There was not one passenger. This team is quite rightly being talked about and attracting attention both on and off the field. The hands were very clean with a slippery ball and Will Prescott’s particular talents in this regard shone. Jack Kelly decided to stand up in the first quarter and unselfish handballs resulted in goals. Special mention to Seb Rice who decided to take the game on and gave a good example of why he is highly regarded. A straw poll of the young men was taken by some of the spectating fathers as to who would be chosen to lead this team throughout 2019. The result of the poll was obvious and mirrored the views of the coaches. Ben Hogan has accepted the captaincy but was quick to question who was appointed to assist him providing a further example of why he was chosen. He was very pleased when advised that Will Prescott and Jim Kelly were to be his generals as vice

captains. The leadership group has been further strengthened by the appointment of Harry Behenna and Tom Kavanagh. There is little doubt that this team has something special to offer and the young men and the spectators are considering the future. Hogan’s Heroes are in for tough, long and bumpy ride when they come up against a strong defensive team but given they instinctively understand the concept of the above maxim little will stand in their way. Special thanks to Coach Richard Kelly who stood up in Coach Prescott’s absence. Through Unity Comes Greatness.

A fantastic team performance this week saw us collect an important win against our more fancied opponents. Despite going 0-2 down after just 10 minutes, the team never lost faith and rallied to score 3 fantastic first half goals. The first came through a solo effort from James Dello-Iacono. James then turned provider and set up Matt van der Hoeven and it quickly became 3-2 with van der Hoeven grabbing his second off a Stefan Matteo assist. Blackfriars produced a fierce response and despite being reduced to 10 men after Cristian Borghetto was denied a clear goal scoring opportunity, hit back to make it 3-3 before missing the opportunity to go ahead from the penalty spot. We took full advantage of their failure to convert and steadied to score through Connor Centofanti, off of a Borghetto cross, and put the game out of reach with a fine Stefan Matteo goal. All players contributed to one of the most memorable wins in many years for First XI Soccer! The girls had multiple challenges to overcome before claiming their victory in Round 3. The girls had to learn to control only what they could, and not place energy worrying on the rest. For instance, unfortunate miscommunications meant we started the game with 6 players, umpire confusions meant scrambling to find a second umpire, and we had even more confusions as to whom was timing breaks. But these girls kept their focus and took charge of their on court performances, individually and as a team. Their resilience and passion took charge into the 4th quarter, coming from behind to win by 3 in a downpour of rain. What a tough contest, in unfavourable rainy conditions!

Netball Open B4 Ms Besanko MMC 2 SIC 14 def. by MMC 26

Difficult conditions made it tricky for us to implement our normal ‘free-flowing’ structures on court, which found us on the back foot from the first centre pass. Playing against a much bigger opposition, we found there was limited space along the base line in attack, preventing our effective goal circle drives. However, the girls worked hard defensively to wrestle some of the momentum back and were able to make some positive inroads on the scoreboard in the third quarter. The team did not give up at any point, a very admirable quality of this young open team. This is the perfect opportunity for us to really learn and grow as a group. If we can adjust our game style when needed, we will move towards being a very successful unit in the years to come.

Heritage SIC 1-4-137 def. by Heritage 3-8-148

A tough defeat for the boys last week, with a strong case of the what-could’ve-beens. Despite Heritage not being clearly better than us, they were able to execute their plans better and implement coaching throughout their matches. Isaac Fallo started us off well, with a nervy 16-14 second game sandwiched by easy wins in the first and third to clinch the first match. Tony Bianco and Will Mencel both struggled to break through in their matches, eventually going down 0-3 and 1-2 respectively. Sam Vlachoulis very nearly took the matchup to a points decider, being pipped in his second and third games 13-15 in a gallant effort. Overall, there are definitely areas to work on in training so we can come back bigger and better next week. Best player: Isaac Fallo (15-5, 16-14, 15-4)

Squash Year 8 A1 Dan O'Connor Pembroke 2 SIC def. Pembroke

Squash legends Charlie, Hugh, Max and Christian took on Pembroke 1s this week and unsurprisingly took home the chocolates again. The unstoppable force that is Ignatius 1/Red squash convincingly beat Pembroke 4-0 and hence continued their undefeated winning streak. Huge shout out goes to Christian and Max for both winning their matches 3-0. The Wolves look to take on PAC next week and continue their undefeated season.

Squash Year 8 A2 Mark Stevens St Peters SIC 1 (rubber) def. by SPSC (3 rubbers)

Unfortunately we had to forfeit our last rubber. However the three matches that took place were fantastic to watch and hard fought games. William O Callaghan was able to win his rubber, 2 games to 1 and was the best player for the week. Aidan Gallagher continued his strong form and Lachlan Stevens continues to get better each game.

Senior A1 Mr Lodge Glenunga SIC (6 rubbers) def. Glenunga (14 rubbers)

The Senior Years A1 table tennis team were defeated by a well drilled Glenunga team. The team had a better start in the doubles with a 2 -2 rubbers score, an improvement on recent matches, but our singles rubbers let us down this week. Well done to Joe and Vincent who won all their match ups and contributed 5 of the teams 6 winning rubbers to the game score. The effort and sportsmanship from all of the players, is as ever, to be commended. Well done. Best Players: Vincent Scaffidi-Muta, Joe Mediati

A much more competitive match up this week, with lots of tension and excitement. The match went right down to the wire, with Thomas Sheldon securing the win with a tight victory in the final reverse singles game of the day. Other highlights included singles and / or reverse singles victories wins to Dan, Anthony, Vincent, Joel, Quan, Kien and Ayush. Kien and Thomas, and Vincent and Antony got us off to great start with doubles victories. An additional highlight was Jordan Tetley smash return during a 1 min rally which he eventually won!

Middle B3 Mr Fazzini Pembroke 1 SIC 12-14 def. Pembroke 0-0

What can I say that the score line doesn’t? In an absolutely dominant display, the boys completed a clean sweep of the Pembroke team. All 9 boys (Joseph, Kyle, Mitchell, Angelo, Tushar, Thomas H, Joe, Tom O and Xander) played very well, and most games were won by a convincing score with the boys only conceding a few points in most games. This doesn’t mean we can now relax and rest on our laurels. In fact, we now have to strive to improve and work even harder at trainings and in true Ignatian fashion strive for the Magis. Best Players: M. Phillis, T. Humphrey, T Jacob, J De Rosa
