Other Chris ans and Communion

The guidelines for receiving Communion, which are issued by the U.S. bishops and published in many missale es, explain, “We wel-come our fellow Chris ans to this celebra on of the Eucharist as our brothers and sisters. We pray that our common bap sm and the ac on of the Holy Spirit in this Eucharist will draw us closer to one another and begin to dispel the sad divisions that separate us. We pray that these will lessen and finally disappear, in keeping with Christ’s prayer for us ‘that they may all be one’ (John 17:21). “Because Catholics believe that the celebra on of the Eucharist is a sign of the reality of the oneness of faith, life, and worship, members of those churches with whom we are not yet fully united are ordinarily not admi ed to Communion. Eucharis c sharing in excep onal circumstances by other Chris ans requires permission according to the direc ves of the diocesan bishop and the provi-sions of canon law.” Scripture is clear that partaking of the Eucharist is among the highest signs of Chris an unity: “Because there is one bread, we who are many are one body, for we all partake of the one bread” (1 Cor. 10:17). For this reason, it is normally impossible for non-Catholic Chris ans to receive Holy Communion, for to do so would be to proclaim a unity to exist that, regre ably, does not. Another reason that many non-Catholics may not ordinarily re-ceive Communion is for their own protec on, since many reject the doctrine of the Real Presence of Christ in the Eucharist. Scripture warns that it is very dangerous for one not believing in the Real Presence to receive Communion: “For any one who eats and drinks without discerning the body eats and drinks judgment upon him-self. That is why many of you are weak and ill, and some have died” (1 Cor. 11:29–30).

Possible Excep ons However, there are circumstances when non-Catholics may re-ceive Communion from a Catholic priest. This is especially the case when it comes to Eastern Orthodox Chris ans, who share the same faith concerning the nature of the sacraments: “Catholic ministers may licitly administer the sacraments of pen-ance, Eucharist and anoin ng of the sick to members of the oriental churches, which do not have full Communion with the Catholic Church, if they ask on their own for the sacraments and are proper-ly disposed. This holds also for members of other churches, which in the judgment of the Apostolic See are in the same condi on as the oriental churches as far as these sacraments are con-cerned” (CIC 844 §3). Chris ans in these churches should, of course, respect their own church’s guidelines regarding when it would be permissible for them to receive Communion in a Catholic church. The circumstances in which Protestants are permi ed to receive Communion are more limited, though it is s ll possible for them to do so under certain specifically defined circumstances. Canon law explains the parameters: “If the danger of death is present or other grave necessity, in the judgment of the diocesan bishop or the conference of bishops, Catholic ministers may licitly administer these sacraments to other Chris ans who do not have

full Communion with the Catholic Church, who cannot approach a minister of their own community and on their own ask for it, pro-vided they manifest Catholic faith in these sacraments and are properly disposed” (CIC 844 §4). It is important to remember that, under the rubrics specified above, even in those rare circumstances when non-Catholics are able to receive Communion, the same requirements apply to them as to Catholics.

Non Chris ans and Communion

The U.S. bishops’ guidelines for receiving Communion state: “We also welcome to this celebra on those who do not share our faith in Jesus Christ. While we cannot admit them to Communion, we ask them to offer their prayers for the peace and the unity of the human family.” Because they have not received bap sm, the gateway to the other sacraments, non-Chris ans cannot receive Communion. However, in emergency situa ons, they can be received into the Church via bap-

sm, even if no priest is present, and an extraordinary minister of Holy Communion may bring them Communion as Via cum. __________________________________________________________

ANOINTING OF THE SICK The anoin ng of the sick is administered to bring spiritual and even physical strength during an illness, especially near the me of death. It is most likely one of the last sacraments one will receive. A sacrament is an outward sign established by Jesus Christ to confer inward grace. In more basic terms, it is a rite that is performed to convey God’s grace to the recipient through the power of the Holy Spirit. The sacrament’s name has changed over me. It was once called extreme unc on, which means “the last anoin ng,” and has been referred to as part of the “last rites.” The Catechism of the Catholic Church calls it “the anoin ng of the sick” (CCC 1511). Y publicadas en muchas declaraciones falsas, explican: "Damos la bienvenida a nuestros hermanos cris anos a esta celebración de la Eucaris a como nuestros hermanos y hermanas. Ora-mos para que nuestro bau smo común y la acción del Espíritu Santo en esta Eucaris a nos acerquen el uno al otro y comiencen a disipar las tristes divisiones que nos separan. Oramos para que estos disminuyan y finalmente desaparezcan, de acuerdo con la oración de Cristo por no-sotros 'para que todos sean uno' (Juan 17:21). "Debido a que los católicos creen que la celebración de la Eucaris a es un signo de la realidad de la unidad de la fe, la vida y el culto, los miembros de esas iglesias con las que aún no estamos totalmente unidos normalmente no son admi dos a la Comunión. El compar r eucarís co en circunstancias excepcionales por otros cris anos requiere permiso de acuerdo con las direc vas del obispo diocesano y las disposiciones del derecho canónico ". This is the Mass at it was celebrated for over a thousand years, it is celebrated in the same way as most of the saints in the Catholic Church experienced it, not to say most of our ancestors. There’s confessions every Sunday prior to this Mass from 9:45-10:15 a.m., and a Sung High La n Mass begins at 10:30 a.m. The La n Mass Chaplain is Fr. Beaugrand.
