We hope you have taken the time to pray in front of our new St. Michael statue along the

South (Nelson) side of the Church. Our gratitude goes to our resident priest, Fr. Dan Brandt, the Chaplain of the Chicago Police

Department for his sponsorship. You may also have noticed that we have been offering

Masses for many deceased police officers, again, thanks to Fr. Brandt.

The 11:15 AM Mass on August 2 will offered for our police. Immediately after Mass, the statue will be dedicated to officers who died in the line

of duty.

The 12:30 PM Mass will be moved to 1:00 PM on August 2.

Esperamos que han tomado un tiempo para rezar delante de nuestra estatua nueva de

San Miguel a lo largo de la calle Nelson en el lado sur de la Iglesia. Le damos las gracias a

En aquel tiempo, los apóstoles volvieron a reunirse con Jesús y le contaron todo lo que habían hecho y enseñado. Entonces él les dijo: “Vengan conmigo a un lugar solitario, para que descansen un poco”, porque eran tantos los que iban y venían, que no les dejaban tiempo ni para comer. Jesús y sus apóstoles se dirigieron en una barca hacia un lugar apartado y tranquilo. La gente los vio irse y los reconoció; entonces de todos los poblados fueron corriendo por tierra a aquel sitio y se les adelantaron. Cuando Jesús desembarcó, vio una numerosa multitud que lo estaba esperando y se compadeció de ellos, porque andaban como ovejas sin pastor, y se puso a enseñarles muchas cosas. Mc 6, 30-34 Este pasaje del Evangelio es muy diferente de la mayoría de los pasajes escogidos para los domingos en el Tiempo Ordinario. El enfoque es sobre los apóstoles, que regresaron de su primera “misión” y no a Jesús en todo. Jesús no está representando de curar a nadie ni tampoco está predicando sobre algo en específico; es solo simplemente un re-encuento de los apóstoles, reuniéndose después de su primera “misión” y Jesús dándoles información y apoyo positivo. El jueves tomo mi día libre, y esta pasada semana, tome esta oportunidad para ir a cortarme el pelo, que ya estaba pasado el tiempo. Mi estilista estaba hablando mucho, preguntándome muchas preguntas: “¿Cuánto quieres que te corte?” “¿De qué lados té peinas el pelo?” “¿Te peinas para acá o para ya?” me mantuve bien en contestándole con pocas palabras y al punto, hasta que llego a la pregunta “¿Qué clase de trabajo haces?” en el cual simplemente le respondí “soy sacerdote”. “¿Tú quieres decir, como un sacerdote?” “Si, como un sacerdote de la Iglesia Católica Romana que tiene una parroquia aquí en la ciudad.” “Así, que haces durante el resto de la semana de Lunes a Viernes, o ¿tu solamente trabajas los domingos?”

Una nota del pastor Ya en este punto yo me habría ido por la puerta pero ella ya había comenzado ya a cortar me el pelo y tenía un mantel de plástico atado alrededor de mi cuello, así, yo persevere pacientemente i dije “Un sacerdote tiene mucho trabajo detrás de la escenas, en adición a la Misa de los domingos.” Yo esperaba que esta respuesta medida redujera la velocidad de la Señorita Caja de Voz mientras me daba un corte de pelo de tortura pero ni cuentas se dio. “Así, yo siempre quería preguntarle a un sacerdote esto, yo soy Católica, yo reciente fui al fúnebre de mi cuñado, y… “¡Así, tanto para un día de descanso!” Y si soy honesto con migo mismo yo encuentro que durante mis días libres el lugar puede cambiar pero el ministerio todavía continua. Yo me encuentro poniéndome al día con mis vecinos en la calle Mozart y compartiendo todas sus varias alegrías y tristezas, problemas y bendiciones. O uno de los miembros de mi familia me llama en el teléfono de la casa y dice “Yo sé que es tu día libre y tú puedes hablar.” En la realidad cuando tú lo piensas, como un cristiano maduro no existe un día libre, o un tiempo que puedas bajar el guardia contra el malo, o simplemente un día para uno.

Cuando el Obispo Rojas visito dos semanas atrás para ayudar, después de la Misa fuimos almorzar al restaurante IHOP. Cuando entramos al restaurante una de las que trabaja allí nos señaló a los dos; “¡Ustedes dos son de verdad!” el Obispo Rojas fue rápido y equipado; “¡Es muy temprano en el día para una fiesta de disfraz y Halloween no es por unos cuantos meses!” “¡Si de seguros somos de verdad!” Siendo un discípulo del

Señor es un trabajo de tiempo completo y más, y si estás haciendo tu trabajo bien, las personas llegan a ti. Si usted mira alrededor, tú llegaras a reconocer aquellos en tu propia vida de quien Jesús dijo “Ellos eran como ovejas sin pastor”. Nosotros somos llamados como maduros discípulos a guiar estas personas sin pastor hacia el Señor. Sinceramente, Padre Paul

A Note from the Pastor

“The apostles gathered together with Jesus and reported all they had done and taught. He said to them, ‘Come away by yourselves to a deserted place and rest a while.’ People were coming and going in great numbers, and they had no opportunity even to eat. So they went off in the boat by themselves to a deserted place. People saw them leaving and many came to know about it. They hastened there on foot from all the towns and arrived at the place before them. When he disembarked and saw the vast crowd. His heart was moved with pity for them, for they were like sheep without a shepherd; and he began to teach them many things.” Mark 6:30-34

This Gospel passage is very different from most of the passages chosen for our Sundays during Ordinary Time. The focus is upon the apostles, recently returned from their first “mission”, and not upon Jesus at all. Jesus is not depicted healing anyone, nor is he preaching about anything specific; it is simply a recount of the apostles, regrouping after their first “mission” and Jesus giving them some feedback and some positive support.

As you heard, Jesus directed them to take the opportunity to “rest awhile by yourselves”. In short, this Gospel text is for the mature Christian, and is a reminder of the importance of rest and prayer, some solitude in the adult practice of the faith.

On Thursdays I take my day off, and this past week, I used the opportunity to get a haircut, for which I was overdue. So around midday, I walked myself into my neighborhood Supercuts store and asked for a haircut. My stylist was very chatty, asking a whole lot of questions: ”How much do you want cut off? How do you style your hair? Do you comb it this way or that? ” I was doing pretty good keeping my answers short and to the point, until she got to the question “so what do you do for a living?” At which I responded simply “a priest”. “You mean like a priest?” “Yes, like a Roman Catholic priest that has a parish here in the city.” “So, what do you do during the rest of your week Monday through Friday, or do you only work on Sunday?”

At this point I would have been out the door but she had already started cutting off my hair and I did have a plastic bib tied around my neck, so I persevered patiently and said “A priest has a lot of work to do behind the scenes, in addition to Sunday mass.” I hoped that this short measured response would slow down Miss Chatterbox while giving me a tortured hair cut but it did not even faze her. “So, I’ve always wanted to ask a priest this, I am Catholic by the way, I recently went to a funeral for my brother in law, and …. “ So, much for a day off! And if I am honest with myself I’ve found that during my free time the venue may have change but the ministry still goes on. I find myself catching up with my neighbors on Mozart Street and sharing all their various joys and sorrows, problems and blessings. Or, one of my family members catches me on my house phone and says “I know that it is your day off and you can talk.” In reality when you think about it, as mature disciples of Christ there is no such thing as a day off, or a time

to let down the guard against the evil one, or even sometimes such a thing as simply time for yourself. When Bishop Rojas came two weeks ago on a Sunday to help out, after Mass we walked over to the IHOP for a lunch break. Entering the restaurant one of the wait staff asked pointedly of both of us; “Are you two for real!” Bishop Rojas was quick and quipped; “It’s too early in the day for a costume party and Halloween is not for a couple of months! Yes, we are certainly

for real!” Being a disciple of the Lord is a full time job

and then some, and if you are doing your job well, people will come to you. And if you look around, you will come recognize those in your own life of whom Jesus said “They were like sheep without a shepherd”. We are called as mature disciples to lead these shepherd-less persons back to the Lord.
