IN: Bunsen Burner Lab

• According to your lab data, where is the hottest part of a Bunsen burner flame? How did you use your data to determine this?

• Let’s take a look at your graphs to be sure they have all of the required components.

Introduction to Chemistry Unit 2

• Unit 2 Big Ideas and Vocabulary

• Homework (due Monday): Define the Unit 2 words on the front of your Unit 2 sheet

Separation Techniques: Pre-Lab

• In today’s lessons we will be carrying out a separation lab in which you will separate a mixture of 4 substances:– Sand– Salt– Iron Filings– Rice grains

• With your lab partner, begin developing the process you will use to separate this mixture.

Separation Lab

• With your partner:– Create a list of steps that details your

plan for separation one step at a time, and describe in words the process you will use to accomplish each step.

– Draw a diagram of the setup you will use and create a list of materials to be used.

• Get your procedure/list checked off before you begin the actual separation.

OUT:

• Read the handout about different separation/purification techniques to give you some ideas for separation that could be used to isolate each of the 4 components.–Make any necessary changes to your

procedure.
