New project investigates impact of equipment sharing on innovationFrank Tietze (CTM) and Tom Oberquelle (Kiel University, Institute for Innovation Research) have launched a survey to understand the impact of equipment sharing on user innovativeness. The project builds on Frank’s prior work to understand how a lack of equipment ownership may impact the way users innovate.

The project collects data from German farmers organised in “Maschinenringen” (MR), local organisations which provide a sharing platform enabling farmers to jointly use their equipment, and is supported by the German MR federation (Bundesverband der Maschinenringe).

The MR concept has been highly successful for 50 years and can be seen as a pioneering concept of the sharing economy.

Input wanted for the development of UK National Strategy for 3D printing/Additive ManufacturingThe Technology Enterprise Group and CSTI are helping to run an open ‘Call for Evidence’ on the opportunities and barriers relating to the adoption of 3D printing/additive manufacturing in the UK. This evidence will be used to underpin the development of a national strategy to support the use of these technologies.

Input would be welcome from any individuals, companies, research groups and other organisations with an interest in the development and application of these technologies.

MET student wins entrepreneurship awardMET student James Popper’s company was awarded a £5,000 prize in the Science and Technology category at the 2015 Cambridge University Entrepreneurs (CUE) competition. Sinclair Fire has developed a new type of kitchen fire alarm which uses infra-red technology to detect fires quickly and accurately.

Tim Minshall (CTM) presented the awards held on 13 May. CUE, the brainchild of Mike Gregory and Hermann Hauser, was launched in 1999 to support student entrepreneurship and over the last 16 years has produced an impressive list of business ideas.

A roadmap for carbon nanotube materials manufacture

Nicky Athanassopoulou (ECS) led a roadmapping workshop for the EPSRC-funded Advanced Nanotube and Manufacturing (ANAM) Initiative, where a world-leading group of material scientists and manufacturing and application engineers aim to scale up production of functionalized carbon nanotubes (CNT) by developing fundamental insights and new approaches to manufacture CNT materials. The workshop’s objectives were, among others, to identify key industrial needs and generate a list of possible applications or products for CNT materials and fibre, identify key enablers and barriers to CNT material and fibre incorporation and generate a list of research objectives for ANAM.

ECS and Lloyds Bank hold smart packaging eventOn 19 May, ECS and Lloyds Bank held a joint thought leadership event on the topic of smart packaging. ‘Good things come in smart packaging’ was attended by 50 delegates from the UK’s food and drink supply chain, who saw industry experts from Crown Packaging, PragmatIC Printing Ltd and RPC Containers as well as researchers from the EPSRC Centre for Innovative Manufacturing in Large-Area Electronics and CTM share their insights.

The delegates heard how advances in smart packaging technologies could produce transformative applications in crucial areas such as food quality and safety, supply chain, brand protection and enhancement and user convenience.

The event was hosted by Karen Smith (ECS) and Nigel Sandbrook

from Lloyds Bank, which sponsored the event.

ECS helps company win £50m contactECS has worked with Metalcraft, a Chatteris-based company which manufactures equipment for some of the world’s most hazardous environments, to help them identify their key issues and priorities and develop their business strategy.

This was part of the Civil Nuclear Sharing in Growth (CNSiG) programme, which aims to help the UK manufacturing supply chain win work in nuclear programmes at home and abroad.

The work carried out by Duncan Hurlstone was instrumental in helping the company win a contract valued £50m for the provision of high-integrity stainless steel storage containers for nuclear waste for Sellafield Ltd, the company responsible for delivering decommissioning of the UK’s nuclear legacy.

PrISMS case study: Newton CommercialThe latest ECS case study from the PrISMS programme focuses on Newton Commercial, a leading supplier of original specification interior trim for a range of classic cars such as the Mini. It supplies markets worldwide, as well as offering new modern seats, trim and other accessories. ECS worked with the company to reduce lead times by 50%, increase turnover by 23% per annum, increase staff levels by 11%, upgrade the enterprise resource planning system and more.

FundraisingTim’s challengeLast year, Tim Minshall (CTM) attempt to raise money for Great Ormond Street Hospital Children’s Charity (GOSH) was scuppered by the cancelling of the Cambridge City Triathlon due to the dodgy quality of the water in the River Cam.

He has now decided to have a go at the Grafman ‘Ironman 70.3’ or ‘Half-Ironman’ distance triathlon on 28 June to raise money for both GOSH and Cancer Research UK. He has never done one of these before (1.2 mile swim, 56 mile bike ride and a 13.1 mile run, all as one race) so all donations to help the great work of the two charities will really help motivate him.

For those who kindly sponsored him last year, your donations have been carried across to this event.

You can donate to Tim in person or via uk.virginmoneygiving.com/tim-minshall.

Happy news

On 26 April Frank Tietze’s (CTM)wife Alexandra gave birth to their ‘Cambridge baby’ at the Rosie Hospital. New daughter Frida is the first member of their families born abroad as far as they know. Her big brother Johan enjoys moving her crib - with her inside - around the house and the garden.Phil Catton’s (DIAL) son Sam was born at 8:59 on 28 April – his due date. He weighed 3.7kg at birth (about 8lbs 3) and evidently takes after his dad with regards to height – his legs were already too long for 0-3 month babygrows after three weeks.Congratulations to John Downing (ECS) who married Jennifer Schooling, Director of the Cambridge Centre for Smart Infrastructure and Construction (CSIC), in their home town of Newmarket on 10 April.

Come along from 18:00-19:30 to see some innovative design ideas created at the IfM.

First year PhD Conference

The 2015 First Year PhD Conference took place on 20 May. The annual event is organised and run by first year PhD students, who present their research to receive feedback from experienced researchers and peers at the IfM.

The event included a poster presentations competition in which students pitched their research to judges Andy Neely, Tim Minshall and Ian Hutchings.

This year’s winners were Na Jiao (CIS), Sam Brown (CIP) and Yoanna Shams (CIP).
